  • Patent number: 11424435
Abstract: The development of a novel battery comprising of high-oxidation-state periodate complex cathode and zinc anode is disclosed. A periodate complex H7Fe4(IO4)3O8 was prepared by a precipitation reaction between Fe(NO3)3 and NaIO4, and was used in battery development for the first time. NaMnIO6 double periodate salts were also synthesized from MnSO4 and NaIO4 using the same techniques. The H7Fe4(IO4)3O8 alone showed specific capacity of 300 mAh g?1; while NaMnIO6 showed specific capacity as high as 750 mAh g?1. Compared to single-electron processes in conventional cathode reactions, the possibility to significantly enhance cathode specific capacity via a multi-electron process associated with valence change from I(VII) to I2 is demonstrated. Novel 3D-printed reserve battery casing designs comprising replaceable electrodes also disclosed. Batteries featuring an ion-exchange membrane dual-electrolyte design are disclosed. Periodate based dry cell batteries utilizing polymer electrolytes are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 11420158
Abstract: Process and apparatus are disclosed for capturing and converting an ozone-depleting alkyl halide fumigant from a fumigant/air mixed stream (14) by absorbing it into a metal hydroxide-alcohol buffer solution (26) in an absorber/scrubber (12) to produce a fumigant-free air stream. The captured alkyl halide in aqueous alcohol solution can actively react with the metal hydroxide in alcohol solution to produce a value-added product, such as a precipitate metal halide, and another alcohol that further enhances absorption. The absorbing solution is well-mixed with make-up alcohol and alkali streams to maintain the concentration of the metal hydroxide in the desired buffer solution range. The solid precipitate metal halide is separated from the liquid stream, and the metal hydroxide-containing mixed alcohol stream is recycled to the absorber/scrubber (12).

  • Patent number: 11419987
Abstract: A multiple dose syringe has a first valve defining a first valve opening pressure and a second valve defining a second valve opening pressure. A storage chamber in fluid communication with the second valve stores multiple doses of a substance therein and includes an outlet for dispensing multiple doses of the stored substance therethrough. A compression surface is movable between first and second positions and defines a compression chamber between the compression surface and the first valve. Movement of the compression surface in a direction from the first position toward the second position dispenses substance in the compression chamber through the first valve and out of the syringe. Movement of the compression surface in a direction from the second position toward the first position causes substance to flow from the storage chamber through the second valve and into the compression chamber.

  • Patent number: 11421270
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein provide reagents and methods for high-throughput screening of nucleic acid sequence variations in nucleic acid containing specimens. Nucleic acid specimens to be screened are loaded into separate discrete volumes. Optically encoded particles are used to deliver primers to amplify one or more sequences comprising the nucleic acid sequence variation. The optically encoded particles may be delivered to the discrete volumes randomly resulting in a random combination of optically encoded particles in each well, or a unique combination of optically encoded particles may be specifically assigned to each discrete volume. The observable combination of optically encoded particles may then be used to identify each discrete volume.

  • Patent number: 11424839
Abstract: A communication system may communicate by backscattered acoustic signals that propagate through a liquid or solid. In this system, one or more transmitters may transmit acoustic signals that travel to, and are reflected by, an acoustic backscatter node. The backscatter node may modulate the amplitude and/or phase of the reflected acoustic signals, by varying the acoustic reflectance of a piezoelectric transducer onboard the node. The modulated signals that reflect from the backscatter node may travel to a microphone and may be decoded. The backscatter node may include sensors, and the uplink signals may encode sensor readings. The backscatter node may harvest energy from the downlink acoustic signals, enabling the node and the sensors to be battery-free. Multiple backscatter nodes may communicate concurrently at different acoustic frequencies. To achieve this, each node may have a matching circuit with a different resonant frequency.
