    Abstract: Heat switches are presented herein for controlling a flow of heat between thermal stages of a cryostat. In one aspect, a heat switch for a cryostat includes a thermal linkage configured to simultaneously contact a first thermal stage and a second thermal stage of the cryostat and define a thermal pathway therebetween. The thermal linkage includes a superconducting element disposed along a portion of the thermal pathway that is capable of transitioning between a superconducting state and a non-superconducting state. A thermal conductivity of the superconducting state is lower than a thermal conductivity of the non-superconducting state. Other types of heat switches are presented, including methods for controlling a flow of heat between thermal stages of a cryostat.

The method also includes comparing each trend value to the reference value and estimating a difference between the trend value and the reference value for each cycle, predicting whether a fault will occur based on the difference, and based on the predicting indicating that a fault will occur, outputting a fault indication.

If conducive, the sensor node uses a microphone that is coupled to the wood item to capture audio data and determine whether the audio data indicates pest activity. If pest activity is detected, the sensor node sends a notification of pest activity, the notification includes the ambient temperature, the ambient humidity, the moisture content, and the audio data.

A rotation damper is mounted on the frame and is geared engagement with the flywheel, the rotation damper producing a counter-torque against rotation of the flywheel that is proportional to a rotational velocity of the flywheel. The rotation damper has an electrical characteristic that is automatically adjusted to change the counter-torque and tune the mass damper.

The out-coupling assembly out-couples the conditioned light from the region in a direction normal to the two dimensions, wherein a light modulation layer forms an image from the out-coupled conditioned light.
