Abstract: The flywheel device includes a sealed housing section; a rotor located in the sealed housing section where the rotor is held in a vertical position by a magnetic system; a controller coupled to the magnetic system; and a braking annular ring mounted to the sealed housing section below the rotor, where the rotor contacts the braking annular ring when the rotor is lowered or otherwise dropped from the vertical position. The controller performs operations to provide control signals to provide first power to the magnetic system to hold the rotor in the vertical position and provide second control signals to provide second power to the magnetic system to lower the rotor.

Abstract: A microfabricated sheath flow structure for producing a sheath flow includes a primary sheath flow channel for conveying a sheath fluid, a sample inlet for injecting a sample into the sheath fluid in the primary sheath flow channel, a primary focusing region for focusing the sample within the sheath fluid and a secondary focusing region for providing additional focusing of the sample within the sheath fluid. The secondary focusing region may be formed by a flow channel intersecting the primary sheath flow channel to inject additional sheath fluid into the primary sheath flow channel from a selected direction. A sheath flow system may comprise a plurality of sheath flow structures operating in parallel on a microfluidic chip.

Abstract: A system for recoating a powder bed includes a build platform holding a powder bed and an electrode assembly including an electrode and an insulating shield. A voltage supply produces a high voltage alternating current and communicates with the powder bed and the electrode. The electrode assembly is positionable over the powder bed, such that when the electrode assembly is over the powder bed, the shield is between the electrode and the powder bed's top surface. The voltage supply produces a high voltage alternating current that creates an alternating electric field between the electrode and the powder bed that causes the powder of the powder bed top surface to oscillate in a region between the shield and the bed and then reposition themselves on the bed such that the top layer of the powder bed is smoother than it was prior to when the powder particles began oscillating.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate to modular wall systems, modular wall units, and methods of installing modular wall systems for indoor environments such as medical treatment environments. In one implementation, a first outer panel and a second outer panel are spaced apart from each other to form a window, and a front panel is attached to front surfaces of the first and second outer panels. The front panel is formed of a polymeric material or a composite material, and the front panel includes an aesthetic design thereon.

Abstract: In a computer-implemented method for handling of an index update, time series data is received at an ingestion node of a time series data monitoring system. An index update is determined based on the time series data. The index update is stored to an index database of the time series data monitoring system. The index update is forward to a plurality of query nodes of the time series data monitoring system.

Abstract: A system and method are presented for customizing a software application for a target market. A request to access an application is received, by one or more computer servers, from a user. At least one of a preferred language of the user and a location of the user are determined by the one or more computer servers, and a target market is determined using the at least one of the preferred language of the user and the location of the user. The target market defines a language and a region. The application is rendered by the one or more computer servers by modifying at least one of a user interface of the application and a content of the application using the target market.

Abstract: A method of operating a mass spectrometer that allows for high-speed operation is disclosed. The method consists in separating the various steps needed to produce a mass spectrum into three or more conceptual stages in a pipeline, such that the instrument is performing steps to process more than two precursor-ion species simultaneously. In general, the number of stages in the pipeline should at least one more and, preferably, at least two more than the number of buffering storage devices in the instrument. The presently-taught methods and apparatus allow for nearly 100% duty cycle of ion accumulation for precursors of interest.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing a separate interest rate for an individual transaction are disclosed. A system may provide a service associated with a account having an account balance and an associated first interest rate. The system may include a service device having one or more memory devices storing instructions and one or more processors configured to execute the instructions to perform a separate interest rate service process. The process may include providing a separate interest rate service offer to a client device and receiving a separate interest rate selection from the client device. The process may also include determining a selected portion of the account balance corresponding to an amount to which a second interest rate, different from the first interest rate, is to be applied based on the separate interest rate selection.

Abstract: A method for inhibiting silica scale formation which treats aqueous systems containing silica with a bottle brush polymer. The bottle brush polymer includes a repeat unit obtained after polymerization of one or more anionic monomers, and a repeat unit obtained after polymerization of one or more polyoxoalkylene-containing monomers. The bottle brush polymer may further include a repeat unit obtained after polymerization of one or more nonionic monomers. The addition of the bottle brush polymer to the aqueous system results in the inhibition of silica scale.

Abstract: A control pad assembly for an input device includes a bracket with a support having a bearing surface, a button cap configured to pivot relative to the bracket, the button cap including a peripheral lip and a pivot member configured to abut against the bearing surface of the support, and a return mechanism configured to bias the button cap towards the bracket. The return mechanism includes a hub portion positioned at least partially between the button cap and the bracket, and at least a first spring having a fixed end connected to the hub portion and a free end that is configured to deflect relative to the fixed end, the free end being coupled to a first portion of the peripheral lip of the button cap.

Abstract: A processor may receive at least one test application corresponding to an application profile. The processor may simulate the at least one test application in a non-production environment for a plurality of infrastructure configurations to generate a plurality of test performance results. The processor may evaluate the plurality of test performance results to identify an optimal infrastructure configuration from among the plurality of infrastructure configurations for the application profile. The processor may apply the optimal infrastructure configuration to an application corresponding to the application profile that is deployed in a production environment.

Abstract: An air mixing system for a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system includes a conduit configured to receive a first airflow and a second airflow and to discharge the first airflow and the second airflow as a mixed airflow via an outlet of the conduit. The air mixing system also includes a thermal wheel disposed within the conduit. The thermal wheel is configured to direct the first airflow and the second airflow thereacross, rotate within the conduit, and transfer heat between the first airflow and the second airflow.

Abstract: A platform for wagering on sporting events that includes two novel features that may be implemented separately or in combination. First, by selecting the outcome of a number of sporting events, the participant is in effect wagering on the outcome of each selected sporting event individually and each combination of the selected sporting events. Secondly, point spreads may be listed as whole integers (or even a range), creating the possibility that the outcome of the sporting event will match the point spread exactly. Participants are therefore given the option to select that the outcome of the sporting event will match the point spread exactly (sometimes referred to as a “push”), increasing the odds of a correct prediction and increasing the potential payout.

Abstract: Improved methods and apparatus for additive manufacture of an ophthalmic lens, such as a contact lens or intraocular lens. The improvements are directed to repeated application of a monomer according to a pattern of energy transmissibility, such as grayscale image. The method includes intermittent pinning of deposited polymerizable mixture and final cure of the deposited polymerizable mixture. A pattern of multiple defied areas may be manufactured, with each area representing an amount of energy transmissibility associated with that area. Each area may have a light value based upon a scale, such as an 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, 64 bit scale or other scale. In some embodiments, each area may refer to a smallest single component of a digital image.

Abstract: An enhanced L-band Digital Aeronautical Communications System (LDACS) may include cellular telephone ground stations, and LDACS ground stations. In addition, the enhanced LDACS may also include a plurality of LDACS airborne stations, each configured to selectively communicate with either a corresponding LDACS ground station or a corresponding cellular telephone ground station based upon an altitude of the LDACS airborne station.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine may include a first piston reciprocatingly disposed in a first cylinder, and a second piston reciprocatingly disposed in a second cylinder. A crankshaft may be coupled with the first piston and the second piston for rotational motion associated with reciprocating movement of at least one of the first piston and the second piston. A combustion chamber may be fluidly coupled with the first cylinder and the second cylinder. An intake valve may provide selective fluid communication between an intake system and the combustion chamber. The intake valve may be generally centrally disposed relative to the first cylinder and the second cylinder. An exhaust valve may provide selective fluid communication between an exhaust system and the combustion chamber. An ignition source may be at least partially disposed within the combustion chamber.
