  • Patent number: 6907160
Abstract: Apparatus for filtering an optical input signal includes a coupler and an arrayed waveguide grating connected to the coupler having a phase shifting region. The phase shifting region is a back wall of a free space region of the arrayed waveguide grating with concentric image and reflector surfaces. Radial waveguides between the surfaces are divided into alternating regions of wider and thinner sets of waveguides. A corresponding change in optical length alters the phase of the input signal which forces an output signal of a desired wavelength to appear at a desired port of the filter.

  • Patent number: 6907091
Abstract: Detection and identification of known sequences such as sequences composed of Walsh-Hadamard sequence and scrambling sequence are provided in a fast fading and frequency offset environment using a segmented correlator and FHT (Fast Hadamard Transform) architecture with frequency offset compensation. The incoming sequence of samples or data is segmented into blocks. Each block is individually detected using a correlator/FHT segment. Each sequence identifying output of each correlator/FHT segment is multiplied by a sinusoid for frequency offset compensation. The frequency offset compensated output from each correlator/FHT segment is summed with the corresponding frequency offset compensated output of other correlator/FHT segments. Each sum is compared with a threshold to determine whether a particular sequence has been detected and identified.

  • Patent number: 6907264
Abstract: A wireless telephone comprising a basic telephone module adapted to perform time critical functions, and an enhanced services module adapted to perform non time critical functions is disclosed. The basic telephone module includes processing resources needed to provide communication, while the enhanced services module performs enhanced functions which can be performed on a non time critical basis so that processing resources belonging to the basic telephone module do not need to be diverted to these functions but instead can be dedicated to performing time critical functions. The basic telephone module can be removed from the enhanced services module and connected to a different enhanced services module, similarly, the enhanced services module can be removed from the basic telephone module and connected to a different basic telephone module.

  • Patent number: 6907252
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting the presence of mobile terminals such as cell phones that are in the vicinity of one or more selected locations. The detected devices are identified and such information may then be provided to an application for its use. Specifically, a detector is installed at a selected location or locations for monitoring the transmissions of mobile terminals that come nearby. When such a transmission is detected, information from the base station with which the mobile terminal is communicating provides identification data, and based on timing relationships between the detected transmission and the data received from the base station, the detected mobile terminal may be specifically identified.

  • Patent number: 6904017
Abstract: An admission control and load balancing system controls admission of packet streams or calls to a network and balances the packet traffic across the network, improving quality of service. The system includes a central database which stores information including cost data associated with individual paths and links across the network. A processor, in communication with the database, coordinates the admission control and load balancing decisions, and updates of the database cost data to reflect the dynamic network conditions, based on input from appropriate data sources. In one embodiment, referred to as the exact algorithm, the database is consulted by the admission control points or gatekeepers prior to admitting each arriving packet stream, and the database contents are updated call-by-call to reflect the allocation of resources to each admitted stream.

  • Patent number: 6903604
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method for modeling and estimating the characteristics of a power amplifier with memory. A predistortion module generates a predistorted signal in response to coefficients of a complex polynomial representative of the amplifier and to an input signal. A power amplifier receives time-spaced samples of the predistorted signal and generates an output signal. A polynomial module updates the coefficients of the complex polynomial in response to a current sample of the output signal and to the time-spaced samples of the predistorted signal. In particular, the complex polynomial is implemented with both even and odd terms.

  • Patent number: 6901140
Abstract: A method for redirecting an active call to a messaging system (126) enables a calling party (108 or 110) placed on hold to leave a message with a called party (108 or 110), thereby obviating the need for the called party to remain on hold. Upon redirecting the call, attributes of the call (e.g., billing rates, assigned resources, etc.) may be revised. Optionally, if the calling party desires to remain on hold, the calling party may cause one or more reminder signals to be sent to the called party such that the called party is reminded that the calling party is on hold.

  • Patent number: 6900762
Abstract: Systems and techniques for location determination. A plurality of tags emitting radio frequency signals are dispersed throughout a region, such as a building, within which a user's location is to be determined. The radio frequency signals emitted by the tags include information that can be used to identify the location in which the tags axe placed, or simply to distinguish the tags from one another. A portable device receives signals from the tags and provides the signal information to a location server that computes the location of the portable device by comparing the signal information received from the portable device to a map of location venus stored signal information, and identifies the location of the portable device as the location for which the stored signal information best matches the signal information received from the portable device.

  • Patent number: 6901108
Abstract: An adaptive controller generates a sequence of dither signals for each of a plurality of control parameters. Each dither signal sequence is uncorrelated with every other dither signal sequence. Each nominal control signal has the first of its respective dither signal values simultaneously summed with it to form the control parameter values used by the controller. Updated control signals are applied in parallel to the controller outputs and a performance measure is taken and stored. The second signals in the dither control sequences are then summed with their respective nominal controls and applied in parallel to the controller and a second performance measure is taken and stored. This process is repeated for the length of the dither control signal sequence to yield a sequence of performance measurements. The sequence of performance measurements is correlated with each of the dither sequences, forming sequences of correlator outputs, one for each control signal.

  • Patent number: 6901145
Abstract: A repeatable cryptographic key is generated based on varying parameters which represent physical measurements. Locations within a share table, which locations store valid and invalid cryptographic shares, are identified as a function of received varying parameters. The share table is configured such that locations which are expected to be identified by legitimate access attempts contain valid cryptographic shares, and locations which are not expected to be identified by legitimate access attempts contain invalid cryptographic shares. The share table configuration may be modified based on prior history of legitimate access attempts. In various embodiments, the stored shares may be encrypted or compressed. A keystroke feature authentication embodiment uses the inventive techniques to implement an authentication system which authenticates based on an entered password and the manner in which (e.g. keystroke dynamics) the keystroke is entered.

  • Patent number: 6901260
Abstract: A differential GPS or GLONASS system (collectively referred to herein as a ‘GPS system’) is implemented for use by a base station of a wireless telephone system (e.g., by a cellular telephone base station). Using the differential GPS system, a differential location ‘correction’ factor is determined based on a difference between a received GPS location signal and a known fixed location of a GPS system receiver for the base station. A differential GPS correction signal containing the correction factor is transmitted to any or all cellular telephone users of that base station to allow the cellular telephones to improve the accuracy of location information independently measured by GPS receivers located in each of the cellular telephones.

  • Patent number: 6895688
Abstract: A liquid crystal polarization rotator device is able to rotate polarization fast enough to compensate polarization mode dispersion. The amount or degree of rotation is rapidly reconfigurable. The device includes a cavity filled with a nematic liquid crystal material. The cavity has electrodes on a first face, e.g., a first substrate, and electrodes on a second face, e.g., a second substrate, opposite the first face. The electrodes are shaped and positioned to produce an electric field across the cavity capable of rotating the alignment direction of the molecules of the liquid crystal material in the cavity. The electrodes are patterned on the ends of optical fibers. Aligning and positioning of the electrodes on the ends of the optical fibers with a predetermined spacing forms the cavity that is filled with the nematic liquid crystal material. The filled cavity is a so-called liquid crystal microcell wave plate.
