  • Patent number: 7406336
Abstract: The present invention relates to beamforming in a multi-carrier multi-user communication system applying an adaptive method for determining transmit weights for the various antenna beams. A set of complex transmission weights is adapted in response to appropriate feedback information on transmission quality from receiving units in order to achieve a maximization of a function of said quality indicator and thus optimize the transmission of the pilot signal.

  • Patent number: 7406070
Abstract: Whether to abort reception of a multi-part message in a code division multiple access communication system is determined by receiving a part of the multi-part message. Correlating the received part of the multi-part message with a known sequence generates a correlation value. The correlation value is compared with a threshold level. Reception of the multi-part message is aborted if the correlation value is less than a threshold level. In another aspect, the threshold level is dynamically adjusted based on a communication traffic behavior. The communication traffic behavior may be, for example, whether traffic directed to a particular user equipment (UE) is part of a burst directed to that UE.

  • Patent number: 7406296
Abstract: A first radio transceiver is operated in close proximity to a second radio transceiver, even when the first and second radio transceivers operate in accordance with incompatible standards. Operation in this manner includes receiving a first signal that indicates whether the second radio transceiver is idle or busy and receiving a second signal that, when the second radio transceiver is idle, indicates when the second radio transceiver must have access to a second channel. Operation includes determining whether to enable the first radio transceiver to use a first channel based at least on the first signal.

  • Publication number: 20080175790
Abstract: A system and method for non-invasive biomedical optical imaging and spectroscopy with low-level light is described. The technique includes a modulated light source coupled to tissue to introduce excitation light. Fluorescent light emitted in response to the excitation light is detected with a sensor. The AC intensity and phase of the excitation and detected fluorescent light is provided to a processor operatively coupled to the sensor. A processor employs the measured emission kinetics of excitation and fluorescent light to “map” the spatial variation of one or more fluorescence characteristics of the tissue and generate a corresponding image of the tissue via an output device. The fluorescence characteristic may be provided by exogenous contrast agents, endogenous fluorophores, or both. A technique to select or design an exogenous fluorescent contrast agent to improve image contrast is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7403892
Abstract: A delay unit is provided to delay adapting modes of a codec if channel communication conditions are improving. A less robust mode having a higher intrinsic quality is selected only after some delay. The quality of the communication is measured to give quality values for successive measurement occasions. The delay unit comprises a plurality of memory cells in a memory for storing the quality values of the communication conditions of the channel for the most recent measurement occasions. A selector operates according to an algorithm for selecting one of the memory cells. The content of the selected cell is used to set the mode of the codec.

  • Patent number: 7403866
Abstract: Detection of whether more than a number N of events have occurred within a duration of time defined by a sliding time window includes performing an event detection procedure in response to each occurrence of an event. The event detection procedure includes associating a timestamp with the event, and determining a value, DeltaTimeStamp, based on a difference between the timestamp associated with the event and an earlier timestamp associated with an Nth previous event. The value DeltaTimeStamp is compared with a value representative of the duration of time defined by the sliding time window, and if a comparison criterion is satisfied then an events detected condition is indicated, wherein the events detected condition is defined as more than the number N of events occurring within the duration of time defined by the sliding time window.

  • Patent number: 7399731
Abstract: A non-aqueous wellbore fluid comprises a non-aqueous continuous phase with one or more organic salts having the formula ((R1-Q)pX)mZn, one or more oligomeric organic salts based on linked ((R1-Q)pX)mZn subunits, or a combination thereof dissolved therein. X is a negatively charged functional group. R1 is an organic group comprising a principal straight chain and one or more side chains which branch from and are shorter than said principal straight chain. Q is a covalent bond or a polar linkage group which connects a terminal atom of the principal straight chain of the organic group R1 to the functional group X. p is a positive integer which is the number of organic groups R1 which are connected to the functional group X. Z is a cation. m and n are positive integers which ensure that the organic salts are charge neutral. The one or more organic salts increase the electrical conductivity of the wellbore fluid.

  • Publication number: 20080165766
Abstract: In VoIP systems, there is a tradeoff between reducing number of lost packets and end-to-end delay when dealing with jitters. Increasing the jitter buffer space on a mobile wireless terminal reduces the likelihood of lost packets but increases the end-to-end delay. Decreasing the jitter buffer space shortens the end-to-end delay, but there is a greater likelihood of retransmissions and dropped packets. Optimum solution can be arrived at if the jitter buffer space on the mobile wireless terminal can be matched to the scheduling delay. This is difficult to achieve in conventional system because the scheduling delay introduced by the network is unknown to the mobile wireless terminal. Thus, constant adjustment is required. One way to overcome this problem is to apprise the mobile wireless terminal of the maximum scheduling delay.

  • Publication number: 20080167029
Abstract: A cell identifier is indicated in a signal to be transmitted in a cellular communication system by selecting one of a number, M, of codes, wherein each of the codes has a length N of code symbols, and wherein the selected code is associated with the cell identifier. The selected code is transmitted as a number, N, of reference symbols. The M codes are orthogonal with one another over their length, N, of the code symbols and also over at least one subgroup of length L of the code symbols, wherein L<M. During cell search, whether to use all N reference symbols or one or more subgroups of the reference symbols to construct one of M possible orthogonal codes depends on what type of cell search is being performed.
