Abstract: An actuator includes a body displaceable between first and second positions, a holding mechanism for holding the body in the first position, and first and second shape memory alloy wires, the first wire being connected to the body, such that shortening the first wire moves the body from the second position to the first position. A biasing element biases the body for moving it from the first to the second position, the second wire having one end connected to the holding mechanism, such that shortening the second wire releases the holding mechanism for allowing the biasing element to move the body from the first position to the second position. An intermediate lever has one arm attached to the biasing element, and the other arm abutting a projection on the body, such that the force of the biasing element is transmitted to the body by the lever.

  • Patent number: 6922551
Abstract: In a radio communications unit with several transceivers communicating in different frequency bands, a signal parameter of a selected channel is monitored in order to detect interference due to intermodulation products. The select channel is for example used by a long range radio communications link and the interfering channel on a short range radio link. Once the channel causing interference has been identified, transmissions on it are prevented.

  • Patent number: 6922449
Abstract: A radio receiver architecture is disclosed which has first and second front end circuits optimized for reception in two frequency bands. Each front end circuit includes a mixer for downconverting received signals to a respective intermediate frequency. Signals from the two front end circuits are passed to a single analog-to-digital converter. The sampling rate of the analog-to-digital converter and the intermediate frequencies are chosen such that the received signals appear at the same point in different teeth of the alias response of the analog-to-digital converter.

  • Patent number: 6922452
Abstract: Doppler spread associated with a Rayleigh or fast fading channel established between a radio base station and a mobile radio station is estimated. In particular, the Doppler spread is estimated through calculation of the autocorrelation function of a sequence of complex channel estimates determined from a known sequence in the received signal. More specifically, a sequence of complex channel estimates obtained from the known sequence in a first sampling interval is complex conjugated and then correlated with a sequence of complex channel estimates obtained from the known reference in a second sampling interval which have been not been complex conjugated. A zero crossing of the complex autocorrelation function is detected, and the estimated Doppler spread is calculated using this zero crossing and a Bessel function.

  • Patent number: 6919127
Abstract: Improved silicon carbide composites made by an infiltration process feature a metal phase in addition to any residual silicon phase. Not only are properties such as mechanical toughness improved, but the infiltrant can be so engineered as to have much diminished amounts of expansion upon solidification, thereby enhancing net-shape-making capabilities. Further, multi-component infiltrant materials may have a lower liquidus temperature than pure silicon, thereby providing the practitioner greater control over the infiltration process. In particular, the infiltration may be conducted at the lower temperatures, where low-cost but effective bedding or barrier materials can terminate the infiltration process once the infiltrant has migrated through the permeable mass up to the boundary between the mass and the bedding material.

  • Patent number: 6918311
Abstract: A chassis for a residential utility meter reading unit includes individual chambers including a transmitter chamber containing a printed circuit board, an indexing unit chamber containing the mechanism for operating dials that rotated in response to use of the utility product to indicate the magnitude of consumption, and a battery chamber releasably connected to the chassis and adapted to complete an electrical connection between batteries and circuit board as the third chamber moves relative to the chassis. A transparent cover overlaps a slot formed in the chassis and a leg extending from the battery chamber moveable in the slot. Rails on the chassis block movement of sliders on the battery pack away from the chassis to prevent disengagement of the battery chamber from the chassis unless the cover and its attachment screws are first removed.

  • Patent number: 6917613
Abstract: A method of delivering data and real-time media from a first mobile terminal to a second mobile terminal when the data is transferred through a packet-switched network, and the real-time media is transferred through a circuit-switched network. The real-time media is passed from the first mobile terminal to the second mobile terminal in a circuit-switched call, and the data is passed in a packet-switched data session. The second mobile terminal associates the circuit-switched call with the data session using binding information, such as an identifier of the first mobile terminal, passed to the second mobile terminal from the first mobile terminal. The real-time media and the data are then presented simultaneously to a user of the second mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 6917612
Abstract: A system and unified method of address resolution in an IP-based network. A Resolver determines whether an input address is a URL/URI, and if so, extracts a domain name. If the input address is an E.164 number, the Resolver converts the E.164 number into a domain name in ENUM format. The Resolver then sends a domain name query to a DNS which, if able, returns the IP address for either a Global MGCF or a destination server along with a supported Application protocol. If the DNS is unable to perform the translation, or the Application protocol returned is not supported by the requesting application, the Resolver sends a domain name query to an extended Location Server (LS) to obtain an IP address of a gateway function capable of interfacing with the destination server.
