  • Patent number: 6819298
Abstract: A high-power microwave antenna in which, in order to radiate a pulse (8), the antennas (4) of the high power microwave are actuated by a pulse-generating source (3) and are embodied normally as wire antennas, horn antennas or the like. In particular for HPM active systems (1) to be conveyed, the antenna aperture of the antenna (4) is limited by the geometric edge dimensions of a carrier system (2) for the HPM active system (1), which further leads to a reduction in the efficiency of the antenna (4). According to the present invention, the antenna (4) is integrated into an airbag (5) that is inflated for operational use and thereby simulate the antenna (4). The antenna airbag (5) is inflated near a target (100) onto which at least one pulse (8) must be radiated.

  • Patent number: 6818594
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and related compositions for altering the physical and chemical properties of a substrate used in hydrocarbon exploitation, such as in downhole drilling operations. In a preferred embodiment a method involves formulating a fluid, tailored to the specific drilling conditions, that contains one or more inactivated enzymes. Preferably the enzyme is inactivated by encapsulation in a pH responsive material. After the fluid has been introduced into the well bore, one or more triggering signals, such as a change in pH, is applied to the fluid that will activate or reactivate the inactivated enzyme, preferably by causing it to be released by the encapsulation material. The reactivated enzyme is capable of selectively acting upon a substrate located downhole to bring about the desired change in the chemical or physical properties of the substrate.

  • Publication number: 20040222801
Abstract: A process for determining the position of an influencing element, using an inductive position sensor, several coils, a capacitor, an amplifier element, at least one changeover switch and an evaluation unit, a selected one of the coils and the capacitor forming a tuned circuit and the tuned circuit and the amplifier element forming an oscillator. Each coil is connected in succession to the capacitor and its impedance measured by the evaluation unit as a function of the position of the influencing element relative to the coil and that coil which is able to determine the location of the influencing element is determined. In further operation, only the impedance of the determined coil or of the tuned circuit formed therewith is measured and used to determine the position of the influencing element, and if the impedance of determined coil changes beyond a threshold amount, the impedance of at least one other coil or tuned circuit is measured.

  • Patent number: 6815701
Abstract: A method and a device for measuring wear on the internal surfaces (12) of barrels (1), in particular weapon barrels. For a very precise determination of the wear on the internal surfaces (12) of barrels (1), a non-contacting scanning of the internal surface (12) of the respective barrel (1) to be checked is carried out with a light-spot triangulation sensor (6), to determine the respective distance between the internal surface (12) and the barrel axis (7) for selected sensor positions. The contour of the internal surface (12) of the respective barrel (1) is then determined from the detected distance changes. It has proven advantageous if the measured distance values are displayed on a monitor (23) in the form of a C-image, wherein different distance ranges are characterized with different colors, so that faulty surface areas can immediately be recognized optically.

  • Patent number: 6813537
Abstract: In an electrical apparatus wherein electrical devices are interconnected by coupling connectors and a desired interconnection of devices is achieved by an intended interconnection of mating components of coupling connectors, identification elements in one mating component of each connector produce identification signals representing identity of the mating component. Decoding means responsive to the identification signals produce an error signal representing an interconnection of connector components differing from the intended interconnection and, means responsive to the error signal effects a response when the actual interconnection of components differs from the intended interconnection of components. Responses are, advantageously, activation of an error indicator, inhibition of application of power to affected devices, or, with program controlled systems, display of a text error message, facilitation of user intervention for error correction, or automated re-programming to overcome interconnection errors.

  • Publication number: 20040214520
Abstract: The participants of a friendly communication system use so-called time windows in the interference pattern for the communication and transmission among each other. These time windows are preset ahead of time in the communication system by the jamming transmitter or are created and/or adapted individually and short-term with the aid of software programs. Since only the communication-system participants can recognize and/or detect these time windows, they are the only ones that can receive and/or transmit corresponding information during these time windows. The information is compressed in the known manner, such that it can be transmitted and received completely during the brief time window provided. The information can then be decompressed and read during the time of interference in the known manner.

  • Publication number: 20040213426
Abstract: The invention is directed to microphone enclosures. Embodiments of the invention include a microphone enclosure having at least one tortuous path through which sound may reach the microphone elements. Such a configuration helps to prevent an object such as a wire from passing through the microphone hole. The tortuous path of the inlet may have a change of direction, which prevents an object such as wire from entering the hole far enough to pierce the microphone gasket or microphone while also allowing water or other foreign object to be more easily cleared from the inlet by blowing through the system. In one embodiment, the tortuous path may comprise at least one inlet having a plurality of openings.
