Abstract: An electric fluid pump and method of regulating flow of liquid therethrough is provided. The pump has an electric motor including a stator and a rotor, wherein the rotor is supported for rotation to drive an impeller that is fixed thereto for rotation to pump coolant from a fluid inlet to a fluid outlet. A controller is in operable, closed loop communication with the electric motor, and the impeller is operable to rotate in a first rotary pumping direction and an opposite second rotary pumping direction in response to a signal from the controller. The first rotary pumping direction produces a first positive flow rate of coolant outwardly from the fluid outlet and the second rotary pumping direction produces a second positive flow rate of coolant outwardly from the fluid outlet, with the first positive flow rate being greater than the second positive flow rate.

Abstract: A variable capacity pump includes a control ring moveable within a pump chamber to alter the volumetric capacity of the pump. First and second control chambers individually receive pressurized fluid to create forces to bias the control ring in a predetermined direction. A return spring urges the control ring toward a maximum volumetric capacity pump position. The control ring connects and disconnects the second control chamber from a source of pressurized fluid based on a position of the control ring. Forces from the control chambers and the spring act in combination with one another or against one another and against the spring force to establish first and second equilibrium pressures based on a pressurized or vented condition of the second control chamber.

Abstract: A cooling fan assembly operable for cooling a radiator of a vehicle includes a brushless motor and a fan element having a plurality of fan blades. The brushless motor includes a stator and a rotor. The fan element is attached at the rotor such that rotation of the rotor by the motor imparts rotation of the fan blades to enhance air flow at the radiator of the vehicle. The rotor is a molded polymeric rotor formed by injection molding a thermoplastic material. During injection molding of the rotor, a plurality of magnetic elements are at least partially overmolded by the thermoplastic material to establish the magnetic elements at the molded polymeric rotor. The rotor may have a bell-like shape, and the magnetic elements may be disposed at an inside facing surface of the rotor.
