Abstract: A self-adjusting tension-balancing roller for maintaining a substantially uniform distribution of tension across a continuously moving web, which does not cause lateral deviations of the web path while it is adjusting.

Abstract: In an injection moulding machine comprising two relatively movable platens each carrying a mould part, a stop means is provided which, in a first condition, defines a limit to the relative approach movement of the platens, and in a second condition permits further relative approach movement of the platens, means being provided to change the condition of the stop means from the first to the second condition at a predetermined instant after interruption of the relative approach movement of the platens by the stop means.

Abstract: A method of die casting high melting point metals such as ferrous metals by introducing a shot of molten metal under pressure into a die cavity in which the molten metal for each shot is produced by melting a slug in an induction furnace and wherein the melting is done in two stages in the first stage there being applied a relatively great heat input to the charge at a relatively high rate and in the second stage there being applied a reduced heat input to the charge at a reduced rate.

Abstract: In the production of a solid-free solution of titanyl sulfate by digesting ilmenite or titanium slag with sulfuric acid, and filtering the resulting solid-containing solution of titanyl sulfate to separate the solids, the improvement which comprises filtering the solution under a pressure of about 1 to 16 bars to form a filter cake of a thickness of about 10 to 35 mm. The filter cake is washed with about 0.1 to 0.5 m.sup.3 of water per m.sup.3 of filtrate, the wash water is passed through the filter cake at a flow rate of about 0.1 to 1.2 m/h under a pressure of about 1 to 16 bars, and the filter cake is then squeezed to a solid content of about 50 to 70% by weight.

Abstract: A hydraulic machine is provided with a control for reducing the capacity of the machine when subjected to excessive pressure.A piston is slidable in a cylinder to define two chambers, the chambers being interconnected by a restrictive passage. One chamber is connected to the pressure line and the other chamber is connected to a relief valve so that in the steady state the pressure in each is equal. When the pressure reaches a predetermined level the relief valve opens and vents the other chamber. The passage prevents flow to the other chamber creating a pressure differential which causes the piston to move along the cylinder and operate the machine control to decrease the capacity thereof.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for monitoring the vibratory displacements of a diffusing or reflecting solid body which in a preferred application is a turbine blade. A laser source of rectilinearly polarized monochromatic light provides a laser beam which is directed at the solid body. The beam reflected off the body is directed toward a first photocell with a photomultiplier along with part of the incident laser beam. Part of the reflected beam is directed toward a second photocell with a photomultiplier. A Kerr or Pockels cell varies the intensity of the laser beam in response to the output current strength from the second photocell to maintain the lighting of the first photocell constant regardless of the presence of speckle phenomenon. Apertures are arranged in front of the photocells and sufficiently small, e.g. one tenth the diameter of the grains of materials of the solid body, so that the lighting of the first photocell may be considered constant at all points.

Abstract: A splicer for a heat cohering belt has a base supporting a lower platen frame. A heated lower platen is vertically liftable in the lower platen frame by means of an expansible envelope therebetween. An upper platen frame on the base supports a heated upper platen for movement toward and away from the lower platen. A rotatable cam on the base is effective to lift the upper platen, and a bail on the base is effective to hold the upper platen against lifting above a chosen point. Both platens are centrally supported for expansion in two directions away therefrom, and the lower platen is made flexible by a number of transverse gaps therein.

Abstract: 6,7-BENZOMORPHAN DERIVATIVES HAVING ANALGESIC AND MORPHINE-ANTAGONISTIC PROPERTIES ARE OF THE FORMULA ##STR1## in which the substituents R are either lower alkyl groups or groups which, together with the carbon atom to which they are bonded, form a cycloaliphatic ring, and the substituents R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub. 3 may or may not be made and, if made, R.sub.1 represents either a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, haloalkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, aralkyl, cycloalkenyl, cycloalkylalkyl, cycloalkenylalkyl or cycloalkylidine-alkyl group, R.sub. 2 is an alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl or aralkyl group, and R.sub. 3 is a hydrogen atom or an hydroxy, alkoxy, alkoxy-alkoxy or acyloxy group. Such 6,7-benzomorphans may be in the form of their optically active enantiomers and/or their therapeutically acceptable salts. There are also disclosed methods for producing such 6,7-benzomorphan derivatives, and intermediates useful in such production.

Abstract: Braking systems for tractor and trailer combinations.A valve is mounted on the brake pedal of a vehicle and a second pedal pivotally connected to the brake pedal. The second pedal is connected to the spool of the valve by a spring. Depression of the second pedal allows fluid through the valve to the trailer brakes. Pressure in the trailer brakes acts between the spool and the body to bias the spool to compress the spring. This force is reacted by the brake pedal and thus the brake pedal is actuated by a force proportional to the force in the trailer brakes.

Abstract: A photographic camera for printing two different kinds of data upon one sole image carrier comprises a pre-exposure station in which a mask is printed upon the image carrier. After such pre-exposure the image carrier is moved into the focal plane of two optical systems. The first of said systems projects an image of data located inside the camera (such as data printed or typewritten on a card) on a primarily unexposed area of the image carrier, whereas the second optical system projects an image of data located outside the camera (such as the image of a person) on another primarily unexposed area of the image carrier. The image carrier is subsequently developed in a processing station which itself may also be provided in the camera. Photographic materials of the diffusion transfer reversal type are used advantageously in combination with the camera.

Abstract: A thermographic recording process in which a dye is produced by bringing image-wise into reactive contact with the aid of heat an organic acid-reacting compound with a dye precursor compound corresponding to the following general formula:X = Ar - CH = N - R.sub.1wherein:Ar represents a bivalent aromatic nucleus,R.sub.1 represents an aryl group andX represents a ##STR1## group wherein each of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 (same or different) represents an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aralkyl group, or an aryl group or R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 together represent the necessary atoms to close a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic nucleus.

Abstract: A gel type applicator stick of adhesive, deodorant or other dispersoid containing in percentages by weight from 0.01 to 45% dispersoid, 10 to 90% water or aqueous solvent and from 5 to 40% of a gel forming agent which is a reaction product of an automatic diisocyanate having 8 to 30 carbon atoms and a monoalkanolamine or dialkanolamine having 2 to 16 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A high voltage cable filled with an insulation gas under an operating pressure of more than 1 Bar, in which one or more conductors are supported by insulators, embedded in a tubular sheath of interconnected rigid elements and in which the gas-filled spaces of adjacent segments are connected together through a sealing element which is open under operating conditions and is closed when the pressures in the adjacent segments differ by more than a predetermined pressure difference.

Abstract: High voltage arrangement for an image intensifier with automatic brightness control, comprising a transistor oscillator including a transformer having a feedback winding, a voltage multiplier connected to the transformer and a control circuit, the control circuit including an auxiliary winding of said transformer connected in series with said feedback winding, and a control transistor connected as current source, the control transistor having its collector-emitter circuit connected through one or more diodes to said auxiliary winding.

Abstract: The pacemaker comprises an indicating micro-electrode in association with a reference electrode and inserted in the patient's body in contact with the blood to measure the pH of the blood. This measuring device is connected, through an impedance adapter, to the input of an amplifier which amplifies the mV output of the measuring device by at least a thousand times, and the output of the amplifier is supplied to the input of a transistorized oscillator generating signals of variable frequency in accordance with its input. The oscillator is connected to a cathode follower to furnish the energy necessary for the impulses for the cardiac stimulation which, as known, are applied to an electrode inserted in the cardiac muscular tissue of the ventricle of the heart. A limiter is connected to the input of the amplifier. The amplifier may be either a direct current amplifier or an alternating current amplifier.

Abstract: Topping mechanism capable of selective delivery of cane tops to either side, for use in a two-way sugar cane harvester. The mechanism has a pair of contra-rotating in-running cutters which are always rotated in the same direction and which assist the discharge of cut tops for both directions of top delivery. The cutters have mounted on them hub members carrying projecting feed members which serve both to gather the cane tops and to discharge them. A top deflector is pivotally mounted between the cutters and according to its position deflects the tops selectively towards either of the cutters according to the desired direction of delivery.

Abstract: A synchronizing mechanism for change speed gears using a friction energized synchronizer ring which is operable through stop and locking members to prevent collapse of the synchronizer ring until synchronism occurs, also employs a cup member to contain the synchronizer ring for the purpose of freeing the same from adverse frictional effects.

Abstract: A conveyor belt guide comprises a plurality of guide sections, each including an integral polyurethane elongated rib and base web having a width substantially greater than the rib at its juncture with the web. The base web has a fabric backing molded thereon, upon molding of the rib and base web, at the side of the base web opposite the rib. Each section has tapered ends for cooperating with the ends of adjacent sections to prevent guide stripping. The base web has a greater thickness at its juncture to the rib than at its edges, thereby providing a predetermined primary wear area adjacent the rib and a low coefficient of friction between guide section and supporting slide bed. The sections are laid end-to-end into elongated relieved portions of multiple ply conveyor belts so the base web edges are within the belt plane, but the thicker portion of the belt supports the rib above the belt plane.
