  • Patent number: 6959009
Abstract: A method for a mobile station to acquire a IP network address from a gateway in GPRS system. First the mobile station generates a link identifier. Next the mobile requests a network address by sending a link identifier over a wireless to a gateway along with a request for the gateway to check to see if the link identifier is unique. Upon receiving the network address request the gateway checks to see if the link identifier is unique. The gateway responses by either confirming that the network link identifier is unique or by sending a different unique link identifier to the mobile station. The gateway also has the ability to respond by sending a network prefix to the mobile station. Upon receiving the network prefix the mobile station combines the network prefix with the interface identifier to generate a IP network address.

  • Patent number: 6956506
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and arrangement for creating a virtual keyboard for a terminal (800) used in a cellular network. The virtual keyboard is generated using an IR transceiver arrangement (12) in which a reflection from an obstacle (15) placed in the field of IR transmitters is registered by discrete IR receivers. The received reflection data are processed in a neural network arrangement (33). The purpose of the data processing is to find out the virtual key position/function that the received reflection data corresponds to.

  • Patent number: 6956895
Abstract: The invention concerns generally the technology of reducing frequency offset in a radio receiver. Especially the invention concerns receivers where a channel estimator is used for correcting the base band signal. The objects of the invention are achieved by monitoring the phase of the channel estimation output and generating a complex phasor on the basis of successive phase values. The received baseband signal is then multiplied by the generated complex phasor for compensating the frequency offset. The frequency compensation can be made before or after said channel estimation thus producing a feedback compensation or feed forward compensation. The feedback compensation can be implemented by compensating the baseband signal either prior to the despreading or after the despreading.

  • Patent number: 6954502
Abstract: A method for encoding video information is presented, where a piece of current video information is segmented into macroblocks and a certain number of available macroblock segmentations for segmenting a macroblock into blocks is defined. Furthermore, for each available macroblock segmentation at least one available prediction method is defined, each of which prediction methods produces prediction motion coefficients for blocks within said macroblock, resulting in a certain finite number of available macroblock-segmentation—prediction-method pairs. For a macroblock one of the available macroblock-segmentation—prediction-method pairs is selected, and thereafter the macroblock is segmented into blocks and prediction motion coefficients for the blocks within said macroblock are produced using the selected macroblock-segmentation—prediction-method pair. A corresponding decoding method, an encoder and a decoder are also presented.

  • Patent number: 6950420
Abstract: Active and inactive segmentation states are defined for transparent mode for a radio access network (RAN) interfacing with a core network (CN) and a user equipment (UE). If transparent mode is valid on the Iu-interface between the RAN and the CN, then an inactive segmentation state indicates to peer (UE/RAN) segmentation and reassembly (SAR) entities such as at the radio link control (RLC) layer that segmentation is blocked in the UTRAN, over the Uu-interface, and in the UE so that TTIs with periodicities greater than the minimum transmission interval may be utilized, except over said Iu-interface.

  • Patent number: 6944459
Abstract: The invention relates generally to a method and an arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service. Especially the invention applies to transferring delay sensitive data, such as speech and video data, in a mobile cellular telecommunications system. It is an object of this invention to provide a solution, in which the physical connection of a packet radio service is kept reserved also during the passive periods of a session but the same physical resource can still be shared between multiple users. In the present solution after the end of an active period of data transmission a predetermined time period is waited until the connection is released. The length of the time period is informed to the mobile station by the network on a dedicated or on a broadcast channel. The length of the time period is preferably made dependent on the required quality of service value of the connection and on the momentary communication activity in the network or cell.

  • Patent number: 6940915
Abstract: In recent years adaptive modulation has emerged as a popular technique to improve data throughput and system capacity in a wireless system. The basic idea is to adapt the modulation scheme to the fading channel quality, using different schemes for different channel conditions. Therefore one primary issue is to determine the switching thresholds between the modulation schemes. Typically these thresholds are fixed according to a certain criterion. This paper introduces a novel adaptive learning approach that is capable of dynamically adjusting the thresholds so as to maximize the throughput. A key feature of the proposed self-learning scheme is that no dedicated training signal is required, instead it utilizes the long-term average throughput to continuously update the thresholds as the data is transmitted.
