Abstract: The present invention provides a process to create without mechanical agitation a zone of low shear, low turbulence flow pattern within a continuous phase liquid contained in a vessel by a continuous or periodic injection of an inert, immiscible, low density fluid, preferably gas, into the liquid to form such a flow pattern, recovering the fluid above the free surface of the liquid and, preferably, reinjecting it into the liquid. The invention is particularly useful if the continuous liquid contains a dispersed phase which should be distributed within the continuous liquid without excessive particle agglomeration or breakups in order to largely preserve the initial particle size distribution, or if the initial particle size distribution needs to be modified by controlled breakups of the largest particles, particularly during the subsequent batch processing.

Abstract: “Cast” films having excellent puncture resistance and tear strength are manufactured from “pseudohomogeneous” linear low-density polyethylene resin. The preferred pseudohomogeneous resins used in the present invention are prepared with an advanced Ziegler Natta catalyst (having a magnesium component and a titanium component), preferably in medium pressure solution polymerization process. The films of this invention are especially suitable for “pallet wrapping” and for wrapping goods of unusual or uneven shapes and sizes.

Abstract: A phosphinimine catalyst for olefin polymerization is supported on a directly fluorided metal oxide with an aluminoxane. This catalyst is highly active for olefin polymerization in comparison to prior art catalysts which use non-fluorided metal oxide supports. The directly fluorided metal oxide may be conveniently prepared by contacting the precursor metal oxide with a simple alkali metal salt (such as NaF) in an aqueous slurry.

Abstract: A friction stir welding tool includes a friction stir welding head having a probe and spindle rotatably mounted at a first end. A support supports the stir welding head between the first end and a second end for movement about a pitch axis. A pitch actuator includes an elongated arm coupled to the stir welding head at a point longitudinally spaced from pitch axis to overcome the relatively large forces exerted at the probe. A turntable supports the stir welding head for movement about a yaw axis. A yaw actuator includes an elongated arm coupled to the turntable laterally spaced from the yaw axis, to overcome the relatively large forces exerted at the probe. A controller maintains an angle of attack of the probe with respect to direction of travel of the probe along the work piece.
Abstract: A solution polymerization process in a series or parallel of two or more reactors at different temperatures is used to prepare a multimodal polyolefin resin of narrow molecular weight distribution. This resin is used to manufacture melt extruded pipe that has an improved performance at elevated temperatures and an improved hydrostatic design.

Abstract: A fueling assembly for use in the transfer of fuel is disclosed. The assembly includes a platform and a plurality of swivel joints and pipe sections. The assembly can be folded onto and supported by the platform, and can be unfolded to extend away from the platform. A vertically-moving assembly and a horizontally-moving assembly are provided, each including two swivel joints and connected to each other by an elbow pipe. A coupler may be attached to one of the swivel joints for releasable coupling with a fueling assembly, and for receiving fuel from the fueling assembly. The hydrant may be attached to a pantograph or to any mobile pipeline or mobile pipe segment.
Abstract: A method is presented for controlling a process to be applied to a patterned structure in a production run. Reference data is provided being representative of diffraction signatures corresponding to a group of different fields in a structure similar to the patterned structure in the production line, and of a control window for the process parameters corresponding to a signature representative of desired process results. The group of different fields is characterized by different process parameters used in the manufacture of these fields. The method utilizes an expert system trained to be responsive to input data representative of a diffraction signature to provide output data representative of corresponding effective parameters of the process. Optical measurements are applied to different sites on the patterned structure in the production line to obtain diffraction signatures of thereof and generate corresponding measured data.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the separation of diolefins, and lower aromatics from mixed streams of hydrocarbons using ionic liquids and metal complexes. The present invention provides a novel method to separate diolefins and lower aromatics from other hydrocarbyl streams which may contain small amounts of water.

Abstract: A support beam and a support frame for an office furniture system which can be used to mount and support a variety of furniture system components and electrical and communication equipment. The support beam has an elongate, hollow lower beam section with a top panel and vertical side panels. An elongate upper beam rail having a top extends parallel to and spaced-apart from the lower beam section. This rail has a plurality of post-receiving holes formed in its top for mounting other components such as a support wall. Spaced apart posts rigidly connect the beam rail to the lower beam section. Rail connecting devices are provided at opposite ends of the beam rail for rigidly connecting it to an adjacent end of another beam rail or to the support frame. The support frame has a horizontal metal beam and two elongate, hollow end frame sections extending downwardly from opposite ends of the beam. A raceway is rigidly mounted on a lower portion of this beam and extends downwardly therefrom.
Abstract: A plastic film having a desirable balance of physical properties is prepared using a pseudohomogeneous linear low density polyethylene (lldpe) resin on a blown film extrusion line. The lldpe used in this invention must have a melt index, I2, of from 0.4 to 0.8 grams per 10 minutes, a base resin density of from 0.915 to 0.919 grams per cubic centimeter and a copolymer/homopolymer (COHO) ratio of from 3 to 9. The film must be prepared under specific extrusion conditions using a specific annular extrusion die. The film of this invention has a dart impact strength of greater than 600 grams per mil and a machine direction tear strength of greater than 350 grams per mil and is suitable for the preparation of packaging and trash bags.

Abstract: Non-Newtonian fluids, such as partially polymerized monomers or solutions of polymer in monomer may be pressure atomized below the surface of an immiscible continuous liquid phase to produce a dispersed phase having a uniform particle size distribution. A dual or customized size distribution can be obtained by imposing a controlled pressure pulsation on a flowing fluid upstream the atomizer inlet. Such dispersion may be further polymerized to produce a uniform or customized bead size product.

Abstract: New sensors and different embodiments of multi-channel integrated circuit are provided. The new high energy and spatial resolution sensors use both solid state and scintillator detectors. Each channel of the readout chip employs low noise charge sensitive preamplifier(s) at its input followed by other circuitry. The different embodiments of the sensors and the integrated circuit are designed to produce high energy and/or spatial resolution two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging for widely different applications. Some of these applications may require fast data acquisition, some others may need ultra high energy resolution, and a separate portion may require very high contrast. The embodiments described herein addresses all these issues and also other issues that may be useful in two and three dimensional medical and industrial imaging.

Abstract: Cellular cushioning material and a method for its production is described. In one scenario, the method includes providing a pre-welded sheet to a user comprised of at least two layers of plastic pre-welded to have a plurality of diagonally oriented, inflatable sleeves extending substantially the entire width of said sheet, and a longitudinally extending air entry passage. Each of the inflatable sleeves has an opening for allowing entry of air from said air entry passage into said sleeve. The user inflates the cellular cushioning material on an as-needed, real-time basis.
