  • Patent number: 6459709
Abstract: A wavelength-tunable distributed feedback (DFB) laser is disclosed where the lasing wavelength can be adjusted by adjusting the bias current of the laser diode. Since the output power of the laser diode also changes with the bias current, a one-to-one correspondence between the lasing wavelength and the output power of the laser can be established. Consequently, the lasing wavelength can be measured directly from the photocurrent of a power monitoring detector facing the back-end of the laser diode. This provides an extremely simple method for wavelength monitoring.

  • Patent number: 6458999
Abstract: The present invention is related to a series of derivatives of novel ether diamine compounds prepared by the cyanobutylation reaction of an alcohol having 3 to 22 carbon atoms with 2-pentenenitrile to form a branched alkyl ether nitrile. The etheraminonitriles formed by the process are hydrogenated to form alkylether amines. The resulting product can be reacted with 2-pentenenitrile and or acrylonitrile and in a subsequent step, hydrogenated to yield a diamine. Specifically, the present invention deals with two types of tertiary amines one made by the reaction of novel ether diamines compounds with ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or butylene oxide or mixtures thereof, producing alkoxylated tertiary amines and the other made by the reaction of novel ether amine compounds with formaldehyde and hydrogen producing methylated tertiary amines. The invention also disclosed novel amine oxides, and quaternary compounds made from said tertiary amines.

  • Patent number: 6443724
Abstract: A forming tool has a die with a seat for receiving material to be formed, an upper punch axially movable into and out of the seat from one side of the die, a lower punch axially movable into and out of the seat from the opposite side of the die, a movable loading device for introducing the material into the seat, an impact press for subjecting the upper punch to a series of compacting impacts, a unit for supplying drive force to the tool and a control device for controlling the motion of the movable parts of the tool. An impact head is positioned above the die, supports the upper punch, and receives the compacting impacts delivered by the impact press. The impact head is guided and aligned with a cavity in the die by a vertically adjustable roof. The impact head is thereby mechanically disengaged from the roof.

  • Patent number: 6443470
Abstract: A scooter has a plurality of wheels, a steerer, a platform, and a steerer support. The steerer support connects the steerer to the platform. The steerer support can rotate with respect to the platform, allowing the scooter to be folded when not in use. The steerer support can nest within the platform, further allowing the scooter to collapse into a compact position. The steering axis, front wheel diameter, and fork geometry are arranged to provide stable steering. Specifically, the steering axis and the front wheel axis of rotation are both located aft of the centerline of the steerer. Further, the contact point between the front wheel and the ground and the axis about which the front wheel rotates are located aft of the steering axis about which the steerer rotates. The trail, measured between the steering axis and the front wheel contact point, is kept relatively small, between 0 and 75 mm. Also disclosed is a collapsing steerer, a parallel-rail support structure, and a compact braking element.

  • Patent number: 6440890
Abstract: New group 4 organometallic complexes are characterized by having a phosphinimine ligand and two or more cyclopentadienyl ligands. Certain of these complexes exhibit unusual behavior when examined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Well defined crystals of the inventive complexes have been isolated and analyzed by x-ray crystallography. The complexes have also been found to be polymerization catalysts which are surprisingly more active than their simple metallocene analogs.

  • Patent number: 6436202
Abstract: Heat resistant stainless steel may be treated in a low oxidizing atmosphere in a heat/soak-heat/soak sequence to deplete its surface of Ni and Cr which tend to catalyze coking of hydrocarbons in contact with the surface of the stainless steel, and enrich it with elements which are inert to coke formation. Parts made of stainless steel, such as furnace tubes or coils, treated in accordance with the present invention when used have a significantly reduced rate of catalytic coking.

  • Patent number: 6429926
Abstract: An optical design for delivering or receiving light from a fluid being measured is disclosed. The optical design is capable of immersion in the fluid being measured, and is capable of operating with fluids that have a different index of refraction. The optical design includes a solid prism of optical material to which a fiber optic attaches by a suitable adhesive. In an optical delivery system, light from the fiber enters the prism and reflects off an internal mirror to a second internal reflective surface. The second internal reflective surface focuses the light to a fixed point through an exit surface of the prism. The second internal reflective surface may in the shape of an ellipse, or may comprise a diffractive surface. The exit surface has a spherical concave shape that is centered on the fixed point where the light is focused, so that light passes through the exit surface at substantially ninety degrees.

  • Patent number: 6424417
Abstract: A method and a system are presented for automatic optical control of at least one working parameter of a processing tool to be applied to a working area of a workpiece for providing certain process results. The at least one working parameter of the processing tool affects at least one parameter of the workpiece under processing. The processing tool has a preset value of the at least one working parameter prior to the processing of the workpiece. A measuring tool is applied to the workpiece prior to its processing by the processing tool for measuring the at least one parameter of the workpiece and generating measured data representative thereof. The measured data is analyzed with respect to the preset value of the working parameter and to the process results, so as to determine whether the preset value should be corrected for providing the certain process results when applying the processing tool to said workpiece. Upon detecting that the preset value should be corrected, calculating a correction value.
