Abstract: A method for analyzing fluids, particularly the solute concentration in liquids which are dense or viscous and are only slightly transparent to light, which utilizes an attenuated total reflectance cell with a curved-path optical wave guide, particularly an optical fiber, the wave guide having a portion of its surface interfacing with the fluid to be analyzed. The wave guide has selected dimensions and properties including bend radius, waveguide radius, index of refraction, and effective light path which optimize the measurement. The optimum wave guide dimensions and wavelength of light are selected through calibration of the ATR device with a plurality of fluids of known composition. Light is transmitted through the wave guide and is attenuated by partial reflectance within the wave guide due to absorbance by the fluid being analyzed. The attenuated transmittance is related to optical absorbance, which is correlated directly to concentration of solute.
Abstract: New derivatives of carboxymethyl chitosan are disclosed, which are designated as N,O-Carboxymethylchitosonium carboxylates. The derivatives are ammonium salts made by acidifying a substantially neutral suspension of solid N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan in a diluent with an aqueous solution of the carboxylic acid. The carboxylic acid substitutes on the primary amine sites of the N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan.

Abstract: An adjustable monitor suspending assembly is provided for a monitor that is positioned under a transparent portion in the top surface member of a desk-like structure. The suspending assembly is adjustable and suspends a forward upper region and a rearward upper region of the monitor. The suspending assembly avoids the need for a shelf member for supporting lower portions of the monitor.
Abstract: A self-supporting, stable support structure is disclosed for positioning and supporting a monitor and also optionally for supporting a slidable keyboard tray. The support structure is also adapted for association with, and for support of, a top platform member that includes a transparent portion. The support structure includes a monitor support shelf member, a pair of side supports which are each equipped with a U-configured unitary frame having a pair of legs and a cross member. A plurality of transversely extending, vertically spaced load bearable wire members extend between each pair of legs. Adjustable connector assemblies connect the shelf member with selected members of each side support. Optionally but preferably, each side support also includes a transverse cross bar which is configured to support a drawer slide in combination with an associated respective leg member; thus, the support structure can also support a horizontally slidable keyboard tray.
Abstract: Methods are provided for the isolation and purification of recombinant lung surfactant protein. The methods involve a multistep procedure including extraction with a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 aliphatic alcohol and chromatographic purification steps which employ a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 aliphatic alcohol as eluant. Purified proteins obtained using the disclosed isolation and purification steps are provided as well.

Abstract: A novel hydrophobic surfactant-associated protein mixture, i.e., a SAP-6 proteins, has been isolated from pulmonary animal tissue. A small, novel pulmonary hydrophobic surfactant-associated SAP-6-Val protein having a molecular weight of about 6,000 daltons as determined by SDS-PAGE and about 3,500-4,000 daltons as determined by tricine-SDS-PAGE has been further isolated from the SAP-6 protein mixture. The amino acid residue compositions of the SAP-6-Val protein for human and bovine have been determined and disclosed. When a SAP-6-Val protein is combined with phospholipids, it enhances the surfactant-like activity of the phospholipids in lungs of animals and, therefore, uniquely imparts to the mixture significant pulmonary biophysical activity. Such a mixture results in enhanced adsorption of the phospholipids with properties similar to that of natural pulmonary surfactant material.
Abstract: Cloned recombinant or synthetic DNA sequences related to the pathology of Alzheimer's disease are injected into fertilized mouse eggs. The injected eggs are implanted in pseudo pregnant females and are grown to term to provide transgenic mice whose cells express proteins related to the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. The injected sequences are constructed having promoter sequences connected so as to express the desired protein in brain tissues of the transgenic mouse. The proteins which are preferably ubiquitously expressed include (1) .beta.-amyloid core precursor proteins; and (2) .beta.-amyloid related precursor proteins; and (3) serine protease inhibitor. The transgenic mice provide useful models for studying compounds being tested for their usefulness in treating Alzheimer's disease, and for studying the in vivo interrelationships of these proteins to each other.
Abstract: Various specific human SP-18 and human SP-5 derived peptides have alveolar surfactant protein (ASP) activity. These peptides are prepared using synthetic methods or by recombinant techniques.

Abstract: The substitution of the L-Pro at the 7-position of the peptide hormone bradykinin or other substituted analogs of bradykinin with a D-configuration hydroxyproline ether or thioether converts bradykinin agonists into bradykinin antagonists. The invention further includes the intermediate compounds and additional modifications at other positions within the novel 7-position modified bradykinin antagonists which increase enzyme resistance, antagonist potency, and/or specificity of the new bradykinin antagonists. The analogs produced are useful in treating conditions and diseases of a mammal and human in which an excess of bradykinin or related kinins are produced or injected such as by insect bites.
Abstract: A vibratory mill includes a retractable separator basket for removing work parts from the work media after processing of parts has been completed. The basket is concentric with the work chamber bowl and is fitted around and supported by the upturn center portion of the bottom of the bowl. The separator basket comprises a circular frame and a replaceable screen of desired mesh size. This screen is in the shape of a flat ring placed on the frame to form a separating bed of substantially horizontal orientation when in use. The bed of the separator is positioned below the turnpoint of the material flow inside the work chamber.
Abstract: A manual override for a magnetically operated rotary valve (10) is provided. The valve includes a rotary member connected to an internal carrier (18) that carries a plurality of permanent magnets (20). A rotary drive carrier (22) also carries a plurality of permanent magnets (24) and is separated from the internal carrier (18) by a hermetic barrier member (42). At one end the barrier member (42) is affixed to a rotatable plate member (26) that is held stationary by a removable pin (64) that interconnects the plate member (26) and a support member (56) affixed to the valve body (12). Rotation limit means are constituted by a pin (40) on the driven portion of the valve which is received in a cooperating recess (36) in the plate member (26). If the valve member jams and there is not sufficient magnetically-induced torque to free the valve member then the override of the invention will come into play.
