  • Patent number: 5202239
Abstract: An improved method for expressing peptides as fusion proteins, uses a carrier for a heterologous peptide to provide a fusion protein having a high pI. The high isoelectric point facilitates separation of the fusion protein from all other host cell proteins, and separation of the carrier from the peptide after cleavage.

  • Patent number: 5195925
Abstract: A method of declawing poultry by applying a form of heat to the claws of a one-day old poult. The preferred form of heat is microwave energy, which is applied for one-half second. After such a bloodless and relatively painless treatment, the claws fall off in one to three weeks. Declawing apparatus including a magnetron supplying microwave energy into a waveguide into which a poult's toes are inserted by conveyer which carries the poult in inverted position by shackles from which the poult is suspended in inverted position.

  • Patent number: 5187153
Abstract: Pharmaceutical compositions containing a 57 amino acid protease inhibitor and uses for those compositions are taught. The protease inhibitor is referred to as A4i which is associated with Alzheimer's disease. In addition to the A4i protease, other analogs are taught as are pharmaceutical compositions containing such analogs and their uses in treating a variety of abnormalities associated with Kunitz-type basic protease inhibitors. For example, it has been found that pharmaceutical compositions containing A4i protease and analogs thereof inhibit plasmin and tryptase, and also inhibit pancreatic trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, tissue kallikrein and serum kallikrein. In that certain diseases are associated with a general release of proteases such as trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase into the circulatory system pharmaceutical compositions containing A4i and analogs thereof can be used in the management of such diseases.

  • Patent number: 5184260
Abstract: A number of data storage cassettes are held in a removeable magazine that forms part of a tape drive by which the magnetic tapes are recorded or played. The magazine holds two parallel vertically-displaced decks of cassettes that are moved under positive driving force along a rectangular pathway formed by the two decks. From a pick-up position in the magazine, a cassette is automatically extracted by a robotic arm and placed in the tape platform for reading or writing by a conventional tape drive mechanism. When the use of the cassette is finished and it is ejected by the tape drive, a sensor activates the robotic arm to return the cassette to the pick-up position. Each deck has one unoccupied cassette space. If during the sequence of operations, the cassettes on the lower deck are moved by the width of one cassette in one direction, the cassettes on the upper deck are moved the same distance in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 5179189
Abstract: Fatty acid terminated polyanhydrides suitable for use as controlled release matrices in biodegradable sustained release drug delivery systems and methods for making thereof are described. The polymers are more soluble in organic solvents, and have a lower melting point than the corresponding non-fatty acid terminated polyanhydrides. The fatty acid terminated polyanhydrides are also more hydrophobic than the corresponding polyanhydrides that are not terminated with a fatty acid, and combine the properties of thermodynamic and hydrolytic stability, and easy storage. The polymers can be produced with a controlled and low molecular weight. The polyanhydrides are useful in a number of applications, including as a matrix in biodegradable drug delivery systems.

  • Patent number: 5177869
Abstract: A double row, angular contact ball bearing comprises of an integral inner race ring and an integral outer race ring, the outer race ring having at least one circumferential depression between the rows of balls and the inner race ring having a circumferentially radially extending end member axially outside each row of balls. The present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing double row, angular contact ball bearings by shaping sheet metal or tubular work pieces to finished inner or outer race rings by rolling, pressing or deep drawing, introducing rows of balls between the race rings, shaping the race rings to final form by rolling or pressing, and rolling the rows of balls constantly about the circumferential periphery of the inner race ring during the rolling or pressing of the race rings.

  • Patent number: 5175235
Abstract: Branched polyanhydrides that have superior properties for use in the controlled delivery of substances, prepared by the polymerization of a dicarboxylic acid monomer and a branching agent. The branching agent is a polycarboxylic acid monomer such as 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid ("BTC"), or an oligomerized fatty acid trimer. Alternatively, the branching agent is a polycarboxylic acid polymer such as poly(acrylic acid) ("PAA"). These branched polymers have significantly higher molecular weights and lower specific viscosity than linear polymers prepared under similar conditions. A major advantage of branched polyanhydrides is that the degradation and release kinetics can be substantially altered without significantly changing the physical properties of the polymer relative to the corresponding linear polymer. By manipulating both the diacid and the branching agent, a wide variety of biodegradable controlled delivery devices for diverse applications can be prepared.

  • Patent number: 5154354
Abstract: A protective gas nozzle (6) and a gas feed channel (10) for the protective gas is arranged concentric around a spray jet nozzle (5). The protective gas nozzle (6) has a core hollow space (26) with a curved closing surface (9) at the rear end (8) of the nozzle (6). With this, the protective gas nozzle (6) with the gas feed channel (10) and the wall (13) lying opposite forms a nozzle channel (14) which at first extends radial and then about parallel between the gas feed channel (10) and the core hollow space (26).

  • Patent number: 5141389
Abstract: The axial forces imposed on a rotor of a fluid machine such as a compressor is controlled by modulating the pressure supplied to a piston and cylinder device acting between the rotor shaft and housing. A parameter indicative of axial force on the rotor during operation is monitored and changes in the magnitude and direction of the axial forces countered by varying the pressure in the cylinder. The net axial forces imposed on the shaft may thus be controlled in a predetermined range.
