  • Patent number: 5340588
Abstract: Solid, water-insoluble lipospheres including a solid hydrophobic core, having a layer of a phospholipid embedded on the surface of the core, that contain an antigen are disclosed for use in immunizing an animal. The antigen (or "immunogen"), alone or in combination with a carrier, can form the core, be attached to or within the phospholipid, or both. Lipospheres containing antigens are prepared by two general procedures, either melt preparation or solvent preparation. The resulting lipospheres have several advantages over other delivery systems, including emulsions, vesicles and liposomes, including stability, low cost of reagents, ease of manufacture, high dispersibility in an aqueous medium, a release rate for the entrapped substance that is controlled by the phospholipid coating and the carrier.

  • Patent number: 5322930
Abstract: An improved method for expressing peptides as fusion proteins, uses a carrier for a heterologous peptide to provide a fusion protein having a high pI. • Patent number: 5318091
Abstract: A metal casting die, and a method for its production, are described. By the method the die has provided over at least a part of its internal cavity forming surfaces, indentations of predetermined depth, area and distribution, by employing a technique selected from the group comprising photoetching, electrochemical etching and grit blasting. The die cavity forming surfaces also have thereon, over at least those surfaces with indentations, a coating of a hard, corrosion and erosion resistant material which extends into and between each indentation as a continuous layer.

  • Patent number: 5317079
Abstract: Fatty acid terminated polyanhydrides suitable for use as controlled release matrices in biodegradable sustained release drug delivery systems and methods for making thereof are described. The polymers are more soluble in organic solvents, and have a lower melting point than the corresponding non-fatty acid terminated polyanhydrides. The fatty acid terminated polyanhydrides are also more hydrophobic than the corresponding polyanhydrides that are not terminated with a fatty acid, and combine the properties of thermodynamic and hydrolytic stability, and easy storage. The polymers can be produced with a controlled and low molecular weight. The polyanhydrides are useful in a number of applications, including as a matrix in biodegradable drug delivery systems.

  • Patent number: 5306117
Abstract: A rotary fluid machine suitable for transferring energy between a fluid and a rotor assembly is disclosed. The rotor assembly contains a shaft carrying one or more impellers which are located between axially spaced radial bearings in a beam-type arrangement. The rotary fluid machine is of the beam type--i.e. it has one end of the shaft extending beyond one end wall of the housing and one end of the shaft terminating within the housing. Two passages are formed in the housing to allow fluid to flow in and out of the machine. One passage is formed in the housing parallel to and coaxial with the rotational axis of the rotor assembly. Fluid moving between the passage parallel to and coaxial with the rotational axis does not have to be redirected thus reducing fluid turbulence and improving machine efficiency.

  • Patent number: 5290099
Abstract: A self-upholding, free-standing adjustable monitor support structure that is adopted for association with, and for support of, a top platform member that includes a transparent portion. The monitor support structure includes a shelf member, a pair of side supports which are each equipped with a pair of legs and a plurality of transversely extending, vertically spaced load bearing members, and adjustable connector means for connecting the shelf member with each side support. Optionally but preferably, the side supports also each include a transverse bar which is configured to support a drawer slide in combination with an associated leg member; thus, the monitor support structure can also support a horizontally slidable keyboard tray. The combination of the monitor support structure and the top platform member provides a useful work station.

  • Patent number: 5275156
Abstract: A reusable device for delivering a release of heat to an area such as a body portion. The device comprises a flexible, fluid-tight container holding a liquid which releases heat upon crystallization such as sodium acetate tetrahydrate. A trigger located within the container initiates the crystallization of the liquid to release the latent heat. The trigger comprises a plurality of rigid objects held within a receptacle located within the container. The receptacle is in fluid communication with the container so that the plurality of rigid objects are in contact with the liquid. The trigger initiates the crystallization of the liquid when pressure is applied to the plurality of rigid objects such as by squeezing the trigger between one's fingers.
