  • Patent number: 5122640
Abstract: An insulating support for a helical wire heating coil for an electric resistance heating element includes a coil supporting notch into which a single helical coil turn is inserted and locked into position without twisting the coil and without unduly stretching the coil in an axial direction. The supporting notch includes lead-in ramp surfaces to spread the two halves of the coil turn until the coil is centrally positioned in the notch, whereupon the coil turn snaps into locking engagement with four separate abutments to prevent dislodgement. A central portion in the notch includes a separate coil supporting surface that limits further movement of the coil into the notch and the notch also includes interior lateral abutment surfaces to engage the outside of the coil turn and prevent lateral movement in the notch. The faces of the support body adjacent the notch are engaged by opposite half portions of the coil turn to preclude axial movement of the coil once it is locked in position.

  • Patent number: 5095237
Abstract: A rotary electrical machine comprises a rotor assembly and a stator assembly separated by an air gap. The stator is formed from discrete generally pie-shaped pole pieces having a progressively increasing radial slot to accommodate winding of the coil. The pole pieces are preferably wound from a grain oriented ferromagnetic tape to improve the permeability of the pole and its saturation level. Groups of poles may be separated into sectors. In an alternative embodiment, at least some of the pole pieces are formed from both a permanent magnet and ferromagnetic tape to provide a constant bias between the rotor and stator assemblies.

  • Patent number: 5090817
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and process for estimating the pour point of a hydrocarbon oil. The pour point of hydrocarbon oil gives an indication of its low temperature properties, and is determined according to the time-consuming procedures set out in the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) test D-97. The present invention generally provides a convenient means to estimate the pour point of a hydrocarbon oil, by directing a flow of pressurized gas towards a sample of the oil, and determining the warmest temperature at which the gas flow does not cause a substantial surface wave on the oil surface.

  • Patent number: 5088833
Abstract: Apparatus for monitoring the cloud point of a liquid, or the temperature at which any light scattering phase occurs therein, comprising a light-proof and light-absorbing chamber, and a liquid sample-receiving receptacle within the chamber having a bottom formed by a non-light-scattering surface; this surface being in thermal contact with a heating or cooling device, such as a thermoelectric cooler, and with a temperature measurement device. The chamber can be opened to allow access to the receptacle so that sample liquid can be placed therein. A light beam source is located to direct a beam of light onto the surface at an incident angle so that light from the beam is reflected or absorbed by the surface. A light detector including a lens and an array of detection cells is arranged so as to detect scattered light which is produced when solid material forms in the liquid as it is cooled or disappears on heating.

  • Patent number: 5072141
Abstract: A switch for an inductive load includes a first leg having a first field effect transistor connected between one terminal of the load to the high potential terminal of a power supply and a second leg having a second field effect transistor connected between the other terminal of the load and the low potential terminal of the power supply. A plurality of current paths located on opposite sides of the load terminals connected in parallel and extend from one of the load terminals to one of the power supply terminals. Each current path includes an inductor connected in series with a diode. A choke energy path is associated with each current path and includes a diode connected in series with a resistors. The inductors in the current paths operate to inhibit reverse recovery current through the diodes while the choke energy paths dissipate oscillation energy in the switch upon operation of the transistors to connect the inductive load across the terminals of the power supply.

  • Patent number: 5059039
Abstract: A bearing bushing incorporating a sleeve (1) of magnetizable material forming the sliding surface of the bearing, a shaft (2) mounted in said sleeve (1) and a lubricant in the form of a magnetic fluid (3) between the sliding surface of the sleeve (1) and the shaft (2), whereby the sleeve (1) is magnetized in axial direction. For causing a hydrodynamic lubrication and an increased cooling effect the sleeve (1) on the inner side has axial channels (7) and axial recesses (9) on the outer side thus that the magnetic fluid (3) by the axial magnetic field around the sleeve (1), can be given a circulating motion along the inner and outer side of the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5058445
Abstract: In a screw and nut driving device with low internal friction, e.g. a ball nut mechanism, irreversibility is effected in a simple and efficient manner when the nut is rotatably driven and enclosed by an annular space in which a helical spring is arranged in such a manner that its ends are acted upon by the driving force from the external driving source, thus that the spring can rotate freely in the space. When the external driving source is disconnected and the nut, due to axial load is subjected to a torque, the ends of the spring are acted upon thus that the spring is deformed to friction locking against a non-rotating surface, whereby the nut is prevented from rotation.
