Abstract: Treprostinil is prepared by a process which involves Pauson-Khan cyclization of an an alkene-substituted, alkyne-substituted benzene corresponding to formula: (I) where PMB represents para-methoxy benzyl protecting group and R1 and R2 are alcohol protecting groups. Following cyclization, the resulting compound can be subjected to several chemical trans-formations followed by alkylation, hydrolysis and salt formation to yield treprostinil sodium. The use of para-methoxybenzyl group as the phenolic protecting group confers several process advantages that result in simplified purification of the final product and improved yields.

Abstract: The invention refers to a tube configured as an implant for insertion at least at one location into the exposed Schlemm's canal of an eye and which, for example, has been mechanically dilated. The elongated tube insertable into the Schlemm's canal includes a plurality openings that are arranged at the tube in axial direction distanced from each other by ring parts and that are in communication with the trabecular tissue the interior space of the tube and the aqueous humor veins of the episcleral vein system and further includes openings oriented in axial direction at a circular arc shaped segment corresponding to the cross section profile of the tube. To realize the natural trabecular aqueous humor drainage, the tube are inserted into the Schlemm's canal that either the openings in the segment are in communication with the aqueous humor veins or that segment with the openings are associated with the trabecular tissue.

Abstract: A photonically assisted analog to digital conversion (ADC) system is presented. The system comprises: an optical sampling signal generator configured and operable for generating an optical sampling signal comprising a predetermined sampling pulse sequence in the form of a time separated pulse train of spectral components dispersed in a periodic fashion, where each pulse is distinguishable by a central wavelength thereof different from its neighboring pulses. The generation of the pulse sampling sequence is achieved by combining broadband dispersion and compensation with a periodic dispersion compensator having a free spectral range smaller than the broad bandwidth of the ultrashort pulse. The second innovative element is the introduction of coherent detection with oversampling of the interference terms of the phase modulated pulse sampling sequence and a reference pulse.

Abstract: Disclosed are 19-nor-vitamin D compounds, and specifically seco-A-2,19-dinor-1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 as well as pharmaceutical uses therefor. These compounds exhibit relatively high activity in vivo, specifically in intestinal tissues, but relatively low VDR binding activity, cell differentiation activity and gene transcription activity. There is thus potential for these compounds to have strong cell selectivity for use as therapeutic agents against some cancers, such as colon cancer or polyps, as well as hyperplastic intestinal disorders, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and celiac disease. These compounds also have relatively high intestinal calcium transport activity evidencing potential in the treatment of bone diseases.
