  • Patent number: 4561729
Abstract: The counterelectrode (16) of an electrochromic indicator device is made of a paste of activated carbon and an organic binder baked on a metal plate (15). The shape of the metal plate can be dished after the layer is baked on without damage. Activated carbon in the counterelectrode, operating with the usual electrolyte and a transition metal oxide electrochromic electrode, makes possible a high-charge density from migration of ions with the application of very small voltages. The electrochromic effect can be extinguished simply by a short-circuit, especially if polyvinyl alcohol is provided as a supplementary binder by dipping the baked counterelectrode therein and baking again, and even more so if the activated carbon paste contains finely divided gold from decomposition of a gold compound during baking. The counterelectrode layer can be applied by screen printing.

  • Patent number: 4562389
Abstract: To permit reliable turn-OFF of the motor when the torque of the motor is sufficient to provide for reliable seating of a screw or nut being driven thereby, start conditions of the motor are sensed, either in form of low-current condition or high power factor; high-torque conditions are sensed by low power factor, or high-current, in dependence on the desired torque level which results, respectively, in a comparatively steep phase angle-torque or current level-torque curve. A switch control is energized to turn-OFF the motor current if the phase angles, or the motor current, respectively, are beyond predetermined levels. To prevent in-rush current, or high power factors from affecting the operation of the turn-OFF system, timing circuits are provided to disable the turn-OFF system when the motor is first turned-ON or if the phase angle difference, as determined by time-comparator networks, between current and voltage, is below a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 4562317
Abstract: To increase the resistance against high-voltage flash-over or arc-over of a distributor rotor with a built-in radio noise suppression resistor (5), the radio noise suppression resistor (5) is formed together with the distribution terminal (1) and a central contact terminal (4) in form of a plate (11) in a unitary subassembly, for example by rivet connection of the terminals to end caps (8, 9) on the resistor, the subassembly then being molded into the rotor body (6) during an injection-molding step. To provide for mechanical strength, the resistor preferably includes fiber-reinforced epoxy as a substrate or carrier, or as a jacket. Preferably, the contact plate (11) is placed at a level below that of the resistor (5) and surrounded by an insulating jacket of increasing thickness towards the plate, so that the thickness of insulating material with respect to adjacent grounded or chassis connection elements, such as an attachment flange or screw bushing (17) is increased.

  • Patent number: 4562431
Abstract: Corrosion of a water sensor resulting from the passage of considerable electric current through it while it is in contact with water is prevented in a motor fuel filter equipped for water separation by interrupting or greatly reducing the current passing through the sensor after the sensor has given a signal indicating the presence of water in sufficient quantity to require draining soon. The warning provided to the vehicle driver is maintained thereafter either by a signal storage circuit (flipflop) or by causing current diverted from the sensor to flow through a substitution resistor or a shunt transistor.

  • Patent number: 4561654
Abstract: An insert provides for varying the inside diameter of a hole in a device such as a bowling ball. The insert has a co-axial pair of telescoping tubes joined by a thread so that the tubes may be made longer or shorter by turning one of said tubes relative to another of the tubes. The inside tube terminates at its upper end in a conical wedge shape. A flexible tube or sleeve is cemented to the outside telescoping tube to be engaged by the inside tube as it telescopes. The flexible tube has a conical wedge on its outside surface for confronting the conical wedge shaped end of the inside tube. By turning one of the tubes, the two conical wedges advance toward or retract from each other to construct or relax the diameter of the flexible tube over a continuous range extending from a fully relaxed maximum diameter hole to a fully constricted minimum diameter hole.

  • Patent number: 4559968
Abstract: A pressure control valve which serves to control a determined medium pressure. The pressure control valve includes a medium chamber with an inlet opening and an outlet opening for the medium to be controlled, separated by a membrane from a spring chamber with a valve spring. On the membrane, a valve member is floatingly disposed via a ball-shaped support member, which acts together with a valve seat. The outlet opening is disposed upstream of the valve seat in such a manner, that during a medium pressure to be controlled the valve member lies upstream of the outlet opening and together with the latter controls the flow of the medium to the valve seat, while during a medium pressure below the valve member descends with throttling action to a greater or lesser degree into the outlet opening and blocks the valve seat at a predetermined lower medium pressure.

  • Patent number: 4558924
Abstract: To assure a durable bonded joint between the two substrates on which the respective electrodes of an electrochromic device are joined together by an adhesive to form a cavity between them for an electrolyte, a baked-on layer of polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl butyral is provided to promote adhesion, allowing a commercially available two-component adhesive to provide a firm joint even if the non-transparent substrate is of metal. The adhesion promoting coating is also used to line the cavity, except where the electrodes are, thus providing insulation and chemical isolation which is important, at least for the metal substrate. The electrolyte is filled through a hole in the metal substrate, which is thereafter plugged with a low-melting solder.

  • Patent number: 4557287
Abstract: In a pressure control valve for a fuel injection pump, which includes a piston displaceable in the cylinder by the pressure fluid admitted in the cylinder and against the force of a restoring spring which biases the piston, the piston is closely guided in the cylinder with an annular gap which can be maintained constant. The piston includes one portion which forms the annular gap with the wall of the cylinder and two lateral guide portions closely guided in the cylinder. The annular gap is in communication with the pressure control chamber and the spring chamber formed in the cylinder. A throttle is formed at the discharge of the spring chamber. The amount of fuel flowing through the annular gap builds up a compensation pressure at the throttle to compensate for the influence of temperature fluctuations in the fluid admitted in the pressure control chamber of the cylinder.
