Patent number: 7816162Abstract: After a p-type cladding layer, an etching rate reducing layer and a p-type contact layer are formed in order on an n-type substrate, an etching mask is formed. Then, by using the etching mask, the p-type contact layer, the etching rate reducing layer and the p-type cladding layer are partially etched in the region outside the etching mask with an etchant. At this time, the etching rate of the layers by the etchant is slower in the etching rate reducing layer than in the p-type cladding layer and the p-type contact layer. Then, a metal thin film is formed such that the film continuously coats an upper surface and side surfaces of a ridge consisting of the above layers left after the etching step. A normal vector at a surface coated with the thin film has an upward component.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2009Date of Patent: October 19, 2010Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shuichi Hirukawa, Katsuhiko Kishimoto

Patent number: 7817106Abstract: A portable phone has a main LCD and a SW-LCD, provided on a path of light to be transmitted by the main LCD, which electrically switches between (i) an image to be seen in a single image display mode and (ii) an image to be seen in a multiple image display mode. Furthermore, a first polarization plate serving as a reflective polarization plate is provided between the SW-LCD and the main LCD, and a second polarization plate is provided on a front surface side of the SW-LCD. The SW-LCD has a liquid crystal layer to which a voltage is applied in the multiple image display mode. With this, an image displayed by an image display can be seen from a front direction. In addition, the image displayed by the image display means is blocked by the second polarization plate when the image is seen from the an oblique direction, and outside light from the oblique direction is reflected by the first polarization plate, so that a mirror surface display is carried out.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2005Date of Patent: October 19, 2010Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hiroshi Fukushima, Koji Yabuta, Tomoo Takatani

Publication number: 20100258825Abstract: There is provided a light emitting device which makes it possible to reduce optical loss and improve brightness by increasing a ratio of fluorescent light that is not reabsorbed by a light emitting element while decreasing a ratio of scattered light that is reabsorbed by the light emitting element. Individual faces forming outer faces of the light emitting element 2 are in contact with a bonding member 3 or sealing member 4. The bonding member 3 and the sealing member 4 contain a fluorophor. Emitted light emitted from the faces of the light emitting element 2 is transformed into fluorescent light by the fluorophor. Therefore, the ratio of scattered light that is not transformed from the emitted light into the fluorescent light can be decreased while the ratio of fluorescent light is increased.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 9, 2010Publication date: October 14, 2010Applicant: SHARP KABUSHIKI KAISHAInventors: Masayuki OHTA, Takanobu Matsuo, Masahiro Konishi, Tomoshi Kimura

Publication number: 20100262981Abstract: An optical read/write apparatus causes a read/write light beam from illuminating means to strike only one side of an optical storage medium including stacked data storage layers each of which is readable/writeable separately from the other layers. In this case, the optical read/write apparatus operates so that data is read/written from/into a second data storage layer after fully recording a recordable area of a first data storage layer. Thus, light can be shone with uniform intensity across the substantially entire recordable area of the second data storage layer without using a complex read/write system even under such conditions that the transmittance to light of the first data storage layer in the recordable area may vary depending on whether any data is recorded in the recordable area.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2010Publication date: October 14, 2010Applicant: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Junji Hirokane, Noboru Iwata
