  • Patent number: 6001740
Abstract: A substantially planar surface is produced from a non-conformal device layer formed over a complex topography, which includes narrow features with narrow gaps and wide features and wide gaps. A conformal layer is deposited over the non-conformal layer. The surface is then polished to expose the non-conformal layer over the wide features. An etch selective to the non-conformal layer is then used to substantially remove the non-conformal layer over the wide features. The conformal layer is then removed, exposing the non-conformal layer. The thickness of the non-conformal layer is now more uniform as compared to before. This enables the polish to produce a planar surface with reduced dishing in the wide spaces.

  • Patent number: 6003089
Abstract: In a network, the efficiency of data transfer is improved. The network includes packets of data (100, 120). The invention begins by preserving an original packet (100). A larger packet (140) is then constructed by combining two packets (100, 120). Either the original packet (100) or the larger packet (140) is transmitted over the network. The original packet (100) is transmitted if the media/port (52) becomes available for transmission before the larger packet (140) is constructed, and the larger packet (140) is transmitted if the constructing of the larger packet (140) is completed before the media (52) becomes available. In a network with cells, a packet is constructed by combining cells. This packet is built until the media becomes available for transmission. The size and composition of this packet is independent of an original packet's size and composition.

  • Patent number: 5996912
Abstract: The injector nozzle includes a cylindrical needle which is axially reciprocated by an armature assembly. The needle has a needle tip terminating in a flat end surface with a spherical transition surface between the flat end surface and the side walls of the needle. Depending upon the diameter of the needle and the included angle of the valve seat, the diameter of the flat end surface may be less than the diameter of the orifice through the valve seat. The circular edge defined between the flat end surface and the spherical transition surface defines a location where the liquid fuel and air consistently separate from the needle in the valve-open condition whereby variations in the spray cone angle and the flow rate are minimized during steady-state and transient operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 5999086
Abstract: Combinatorial blocks (KBL) are arranged between an input register (RG1) and output register (RG2) in the circuit arrangement. The input (E.sub.-- RG1) and the output (A.sub.-- RG1) of the input register (RG1) connected preceding the combinatorial blocks (KBL) is connected to a comparison unit (COM) that compares the value at the input and at the output of the input register (RG1) and, given occurrence of a signal value change at the input, outputs a control signal for loading the output value of the combinatorial blocks (KBL) into the output register (RG2) connected following the combinatorial blocks. In this way, the running time required for an operation in the circuit arrangement can be shortened given specific value combinations.

  • Patent number: 5999595
Abstract: A method and system for processing user-level messages, such as voicemail messages, among messaging systems within a network includes enabling inter-system transmissions of identifications of the physical locations in memory space for the mailboxes in which the contents of the user-level messages are directed. Each mailbox in a particular system is uniquely associated with a user and with a physical location in memory space at the system. The physical locations of the mailboxes are identified to remote systems within the network, so that the user-level messages may be accompanied by system-level messages that identify the appropriate physical locations. Thus, a receiving system may determine the physical location of an intended mailbox without performing a database search. In the preferred embodiment, each system-level message also includes the mailbox number, so that the receiving station may verify the physical location by matching the identified mailbox number with the actual mailbox number.

  • Patent number: 5998254
Abstract: The method sequence results in a conductive connection between two zones of a first conductivity type. In particular, one of the zones is a source/drain zone of a transistor. Instead of the conventional additional nitride layer, the connection is produced by implanting directly into the third insulation layer, which is present anyway, and by utilizing the fact that the third insulation layer forms the lateral spacers on the gatestack disposed on the region of the second conductivity type.

  • Patent number: 5997185
Abstract: Laser diodes have a driver current which is dependent on aging and temperature. Emitted optical power is detected and adjusted through the use of a monitor element. However, previous transmit modules are suitable only for semiconductor lasers which emit multi-directionally. The inventive optoelectronic transmit module includes a semiconductor laser which emits unidirectionally and a monitor element. Active areas of both components point toward a coupling device. Optical coupling elements in the form of lenses and reflective elements in the form of reflective surfaces are integrated into the coupling device. The configuration of the coupling device is selected to be such that at least part of emitted radiation is passed to the monitor element, but a remaining portion penetrates the coupling device to the coupling element and is injected into or coupled-in by the latter, for example to an optical waveguide. The transmit module is particularly suitable for Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser Diodes.
