Abstract: Embodiments are provided to provide a distributed transaction manager supporting repeatable read isolation level in Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) database systems without a centralized component. Before starting a transaction, a first node identifies a second node involved in the transaction, and requests from the second node a snapshot of current transactions at the second node. After receiving the snapshot from the second node, the first node combines into a reconciled snapshot the snapshot of transactions from the second node with current transactions at the first node. The first node then transmits the reconciled snapshot to the second node and starts the transaction using the reconciled snapshot. A branch transaction is then started at the second node in accordance with the reconciled snapshot. Upon ending the transaction and the branch transaction, the first node and the second node perform a two phase commit (2PC) protocol.

Abstract: The invention is directed to compositions and methods for selectively reducing the expression of a gene product from a desired target gene in a cell, as well as for treating diseases caused by the expression of the gene. More particularly, the invention is directed to compositions that contain double stranded RNA (“dsRNA”), and methods for preparing them, that are capable of reducing the expression of target genes in eukaryotic cells. The dsRNA has a first oligonucleotide sequence that is between 25 and about 30 nucleotides in length and a second oligonucleotide sequence that anneals to the first sequence under biological conditions. In addition, a region of one of the sequences of the dsRNA having a sequence length of at least 19 nucleotides is sufficiently complementary to a nucleotide sequence of the RNA produced from the target gene to trigger the destruction of the target RNA by the RNAi machinery.

Abstract: Described herein are methods and devices for capturing and determining the identity of molecules using nanopores. The molecules can be counted, sorted and/or binned rapidly in a parallel manner using a large number of nanopores (e.g., 132,000 nanopores reading 180 million molecules in 1 hour). This fast capture and reading of a molecule can be used to capture probe molecules or other molecules that have been generated to represent an original, hard to detect molecule or portions of an original molecule. Precise counting of sample molecules or surrogates for sample molecules can occur. The methods and devices described herein can, among other things, replace flow cytometers and other counting instruments (e.g., while providing increased precision and throughput relative to a flow cytometer).

Abstract: A system and a method for making a beverage from a mixture of liquid and solid particles are disclosed. The liquid and solid particles are introduced into a chamber so as to allow the liquid to infuse with the flavour or quality of the solid particles. A piston having an integrated filter is in sealed contact with the chamber, and can be vertically displaced within the chamber. When the piston is displaced downward, air is forced from below the filter and into the mixture sitting above the filter, agitating the mixture. When the piston is displaced upward, the mixture is drawn from above the filter. This separates the spent solid particles from the infused liquid, which collects in the chamber, thereby making the beverage. Also described are a driving mechanism for displacing the piston, a dispensing mechanism for releasing the beverage, and a wiping mechanism for wiping spent solid particles.

Abstract: Influence of a plurality of base metal loadings on TWC performance of ZPGM catalysts for TWC applications is disclosed. ZPGM catalyst samples are prepared and configured with washcoat on ceramic substrate, overcoat including doped Zirconia support oxide, and impregnation layer of Cu—Mn spinel with different base metal loadings. Testing of ZPGM catalyst samples including variations of base metal loadings is developed under isothermal steady state sweep test condition to evaluate the influence of variations of base metal loadings on TWC performance in NOX conversion. As a result of increasing Cu—Mn base metal loadings, improvements of lean NOX conversion and oxygen storage capacity may be realized at higher base metal loading ratios. The ZPGM catalyst samples exhibiting higher NOX conversion and OSC are compared with commercial PGM catalyst samples under lean condition.
