Abstract: A system for converting a heterogeneous compressed moving picture data, includes: a variable length decoder for generating variable length decoded data as first compressed moving picture data from a first data bit stream; a compressed moving picture data analyzer for analyzing layer types of the first compressed moving picture data; a layer-matching device for matching layers of the first compressed moving picture data to layers of second compressed moving picture data, thereby generating the second compressed moving picture data; and a variable length encoder for generating variable length coded data as a second data bit stream. Thereby, the system can convert an H.261 compressed moving picture data to an MPEG-1 compressed moving picture data on a compression domain.

Abstract: Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) causes an optical pulse to be split into two arbitrarily oriented orthogonally polarized PMD pulses with a differential group delay therebetween in an optical transmission line. To compensate for the PMD induced distortion, a polarization controller in a PMD compensator selectively adjusts the aligning of the received arbitrarily oriented first and second principal states of polarization of the PMD pulses to match fixed orientations of predetermined first and second principal states of polarization of a beam splitter. First and second output paths of the beam splitter are coupled to first and second paths of a Mach-Zender interferometer arrangement. The Mach-Zender interferometer arrangement measures the PMD differential delay between the first and second principal states of polarization of the respective first and second PMD optical pulses, and selectively compensates for the measured differential delay.
Abstract: An analog front end (AFE) circuit used in a high-speed communications system is presented that includes multiple stages each including a bandpass filter, base band modulator, low pass filter and Sigma-Delta modulator. Each stage processes a fractional portion of the total frequency of a wide bandwidth analog signal. The number of such AFE stages is configurable in parallel to process the entire bandwidth of the received signal. The AFEs can be incorporated in a single integrated circuit or similar suitable manner so as to be modular, and easily replaceable/upgradeable. To achieve minimum quantization noise and reduce manufacturing costs, the Sigma-Delta modulators in each AFE are made to have identical characteristics. Because the wideband signal is broken down into smaller frequency portions, the sampling rate, and thus the complexity and cost associated with the AFEs, is reduced significantly.
Abstract: The printed antenna is compact and comprises, superposed by dielectric layers, two feed lines having perpendicular microstrips, a ground plane, a first radiating element including a plurality of conductive strips perpendicular to a first coupling slot formed in the ground plane, and a second radiating element superposed on the first element and including a plurality of conductive strips crossing by superposition the first strips and perpendicular to a second coupling slot formed in the ground plane. For example, the elements radiate in the DCS-1800 and GSM radiotelephone frequency bands with perfectly orthogonal fields.
Abstract: A half-wave printed “patch” antenna includes, symmetrically with respect to a plane of symmetry of the antenna perpendicular to faces of the antenna, a dielectric substrate and two conductive layers on respective faces of the substrate. One face of the substrate includes a raised portion extending lengthwise of the plane of symmetry and one of the conductive layers extends over and along said raised portion. Consequently, the antenna has a small size, combined with a more open radiation diagram. The antenna includes only one raised portion for linear polarization, or two raised portions or a raised portion with axial symmetry for crossed polarizations.

Abstract: Systems and methods providing for the determination of an individual's rate of oxygen consumption, in order to determine the amount of work that is performed by the individual's body. A heart monitor measures the heart rate of the individual and an accelerometer measures the acceleration of the body. The heart rate and acceleration outputs are stored locally on a storage device. The outputs can be downloaded to a local base station, that in turn transmits the outputs to a central clearinghouse. The clearinghouse receives and stores the output on a central mass storage device. At the clearinghouse the raw data is processed into a usable form and the rate of oxygen consumption is mathematically determined in order to determine the amount of work that is performed on the individual's body.

Abstract: A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer includes a set of line cards, a set of xDSL modem cards, a redundant xDSL modem card, a test and switching unit, a control unit, and a trunk unit. Each line card may include a switch, through which the control unit may selectively direct the line card to couple to a corresponding xDSL modem card or a redundancy bus. The test and switching unit is coupled to the redundancy bus, and includes a relay matrix and a Copper Loop Tester (CLT). In response to commands received from the control unit, the relay matrix may route redundancy bus signals to the CLT and/or the redundant xDSL modem card. The CLT performs tests to measure or determine subscriber loop electrical characteristics in response to control unit commands, and returns test results to the control unit.
Abstract: A process for dynamic management of subscription data for a terminal in a “prepaid” mode as part of a telecommunication network, in which a customer in possession of, or using, the terminal acquires two numbers for activating the terminal and/or crediting the terminal account. The two numbers could be acquired from a pre-paid card, for example, with the numbers hidden until a covering is scratched off by the users. The terminal must be activated on the network by first entering a authentication key, whereby the terminal obtains an identity on the network. The customer can then add an account number that creates and/or credits the terminal account on the network, whereby the terminal obtains a call number from the network. The customer can add credit to his account by purchasing additional pre-paid cards.

Abstract: A tone detector includes at least one circuit (hereinafter “single phase reference matcher”) that not only performs a convolution of an input signal with a reference signal, but also compares the result of convolution with a threshold to determine if there is a match, and if so drives a signal active indicating that tone is present. If there is no match, another circuit (hereinafter “phase shifter”) delays the reference signal by a fraction (e.g. ⅛) of the measuring period, thereby to introduce a phase shift (e.g. &pgr;/8) between the input signal and the reference signal. The “single phase reference matcher” again performs the just-described operation, this time with a delayed reference signal, and repeats the operation as often as necessary (e.g. eight times) to cycle through the entire measuring period, thereby to ensure that tone (if present in the input signal) is detected irrespective of phase, during one of the operations.

Abstract: A method and system for reducing prediction error impulses using a gain average calculator, an impulse detector, a signal classifier decision means and a gain compensator wherein the compensated scaling of a quantizer is determined in a process of encoding/decoding a VBD type transmission by using a vectorial linear non-adaptive predicting type algorithm.
Abstract: A methodology of creating integrated circuits with improved noise isolation is presented. The circuitry of an integrated circuits is separated into noise generating circuit blocks and noise sensitive circuit blocks. N-type and P-type diffusion guard rings are placed around each of the circuit blocks. Substantially overlying the N-type and P-type diffusion guard rings are power supply meshes which are intimately in contract with the guard rings below through spaced apart vias. The power supply meshes not only supply power for the circuit blocks, but also reverse-bias the diffusion guard rings for improved noise isolation.
