  • Patent number: 6381319
Abstract: An apparatus for querying a central service dials telephone numbers to establish contact with the central service, and accesses services housed in the central service. The geographical location of the apparatus is stored in a tie unit and sent to the apparatus upon request. The apparatus forwards this information to the central service that then provides information about facilities (e.g., restaurants, sports venues, theaters, etc.) at that location.

  • Patent number: 6373929
Abstract: Because of technological and regulatory changes, telecommunication service is becoming more of a commodity, with competition between service providers for traffic. The herein disclosed invention stimulates this competition and facilitates a service provider's and a consumer's ability to make economic choices between competing telecommunication carriers. In this method and system, telecommunication switches route calls in accordance with economic incentives (e.g., least cost routing) resulting from a bidding process between participating telecommunication carriers (Carriers), administered by a bidding service provider through operation of a central processor, a computer referred to as a bidding moderator (Moderator). Some of these switches may be provisioned to treat every call attempt presented to them as a call attempt to be routed to the low-bidding Carrier.

  • Publication number: 20020041673
Abstract: The distribution of calls to directory inquiry centers is concentrated in a server which reduces the traffic between the centers. For a given center, the server cyclically determines a forecast waiting time of the calls as a function of an average waiting time per call which it estimates for the given center, and compares the forecast waiting time with two thresholds so as to decide to route the calls to the given center or to another, less heavily loaded, inquiry center, and with two other thresholds so that the given center accepts calls from other, more heavily loaded centers, or refuses them if it is itself saturated.

  • Patent number: 6370138
Abstract: The user cell is received from the FRIA (Frame Relay Interface Apparatus) for thereby performing a connection identifier-based usage parameter control function, and the user cell which follows the permitted traffic and the IPC cell received from the FRIA through the IPC bus are multiplexed and synchronized to the module clock of the clock generator. The thusly synchronized user cell and IPC cell are transmitted to the ATM switch which is away by a few meters. The head data of the ATM cell received from the ATM switch is analyzed. In the case of the user cell, the frame relay interface apparatus identifier is analyzed, and the cell is transmitted to a corresponding FRIA in accordance with a corresponding virtual path identifier and virtual channel identifier value, and in the case of the IPC cell and OAM cell, the processor processes the cell using the AAL5 reassembling unit, so that it is possible to provide a cell transmission function between the frame relay interface apparatus and the ATM switching system.

  • Publication number: 20020037000

  • Patent number: 6363187
Abstract: An optical waveguide provided with a linearly chirped Bragg reflective grating can be employed as a device that provides linear dispersion compensation. The amount of the linear dispersion thereby provided can be rendered adjustable by adjustment of the magnitude of axial strain imposed upon the grating. If the chirp is purely linear, and if also, the strain is at all times uniform along the length of the grating, adjustment of the strain magnitude will have no such effect. This requires the presence of a quadratic chirp term, but such a term introduces its own transmission penalty. This penalty is compensated at least in part by causing the light to make a reflection in a further Bragg reflection grating whose quadratic component of chirp has the opposite sign to that of the other Bragg reflection grating, but a substantially matched modulus. The effect of the strain is to scale the effective pitch of the Bragg reflection grating by scaling its physical pitch.

  • Patent number: 6363262
Abstract: To accommodate for a release of uncleared spectrum in a wideband communication system (10) while improving isolation in a receiver (FIG. 4) between wideband carriers, a common intermediate frequency converter down-converts differing but relatively high frequency carriers, incident to the receiver, to corresponding differing but relatively low frequency carriers. Receiver chains (174-176) response to the plurality of relatively low frequency carriers each have a filter (140-144) arranged to isolate selected ones of the relatively low frequency carriers. In a radio frequency communication system having three or more frequency sequential carriers, the receiver chains (174-176) may include branches that have filters that further isolate carriers within the receiver by applying non-sequential carriers to the branches in each receiver chain.
