Abstract: A method is disclosed for transmitting video images over a data communication network, in which method the video image is encoded at the sending end, transmitted, and decoded at the receiving end. The first frame is compressed and transmitted to the receiving end where it is stored in image memory. A copy of the first frame is retained at the transmitting end and divided into blocks. The next frame is also divided into blocks. The blocks of the first frame and the blocks of the next frame are compared to determine a block difference for each block. For each block, the difference between successive blocks is compressed and transmitted if the block difference for the block exceeds a predetermined threshold.
Abstract: An IC card reader that can output data in an audio form. The IC card reader includes a small portable case in which an IC card can be inserted. A microcontroller powered by a battery within the case reads the stored data from the IC card and encodes the read data into a series of voice commands. A voice synthesizer circuit produces a synthetic speech signal from the encoded data. Thus, in use of the IC card reader, when a button is depressed to close a switch, the microcontroller is caused to interrogate the card so that the data stored on the card is read into the microcontroller. The microcomputer produces a synthetic speech signal that is amplified by the amplifier and output by the speaker as synthetic speech which can be heard by the user by holding the card reader with the speaker against the user's ear.
Abstract: The method of quickly locating non-standard control channels in private cellular systems is accomplished in an embodiment of the present invention by determining the modulation type of a particular channel. The mobile station scans a received RF channel. The received signal is used for the evaluation of the modulation type of that channel by using matched filters designed for the specific signal of interest, and/or in another embodiment of the present invention is used for producing the spectral energy distribution of the channel revealing the type of modulation.
Abstract: A server in a telecommunications network connects to subscriber equipment of at least one type and to caller equipment of several different types via a communications medium. The server includes a receiving element, a translating element, and a routing element. The receiving element receives messages intended for the subscriber equipment from the caller equipment in caller formats. The translating element translates the messages to a subscriber format compatible with the subscriber equipment. The routing element automatically transfers the translated messages to the subscriber equipment without requiring the subscriber to initiate the message transfer.

Abstract: A system for acquiring and processing signals for controlling a device or a process has inputs receiving analog signals supplied by sensors and which are processed in order to send to the device control signals configured in accordance with a predetermined communication protocol. The system includes a screen and a keypad for accessing and modifying control signal configuration parameters. One application of the system is to controlling devices producing sound effects added to or applied to the sound of a musical instrument.
Abstract: A shutter plate for a self-locking cover for a telephone paystation coin receptacle includes a coupler for joining a shutter control arm to the shutter plate that deforms when a force having a predetermined magnitude is applied to the control arm. The deformation of the coupler provides an indicator that an attempt to move the shutter plate to expose an aperture in the self-locking cover has occurred. The coupler may be one or more holes in a portion of the shutter control arm that is external of the self-locking cover. The coupler may take the form of a weld that joins the shutter control arm and the shutter plate. Frangible material may also be used to fill openings in the control arm to provide a tamper indicator. The tamper indicator facilitates detection of tamper attempts by visual inspection.
Abstract: The invention relates to a signal intended to be transmitted towards a plurality of receivers, of the type comprising at least two source signals and consisting of a plurality of independently modulated substantially orthogonal carrier frequencies distributed over a predetermined frequency band. According to the invention, said frequency band (12) is divided into at least two frequency sub-bands (131-134) each comprising a set of said substantially orthogonal carrier frequencies (11), and to each of said sub-bands is allocated one of said source signals, so that a receiver may retrieve from the transmitted signal, by filtration, at least one of said sub-bands and perform demodulation processing only on the carrier frequencies contained in the retrieved sub-bands. The invention also relates to a transmission process as well as to a receiver of such signal.

Abstract: Frame synchronization between Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) transceivers operating using Discrete Multi-tone (DMT) line code is effectuated by boundary detection logic executing a rapid, computationally simple correlation process. The invention is particularly suited for ADSL software modem implementations, where conservation of computing resources is especially critical, and loss of synchronization can lead to significant unrecoverable data errors.

Abstract: The invention concerns a multicarrier signal designed to be transmitted to digital receivers, especially in a non-stationary transmission channel, corresponding to the frequency multiplexing of several elementary carriers each corresponding to a series of symbols, two consecutive symbols being separated by a symbol time &tgr;0, a signal in which, firstly, the spacing &ngr;0 between two neighboring carriers is equal to half of the reverse of the symbol time &tgr;0 and, secondly, each carrier undergoes an operation of filtering for the shaping of its spectrum having a bandwidth strictly greater than twice said spacing between carriers &ngr;0 and is spectrum is chosen so that each symbol element is highly concentrated in the temporal domain and in the frequency domain.
The invention also concerns the methods for the transmission and reception of such a signal.

Abstract: A direct memory read and cell transmission apparatus for an ATM cell segmentation system having a host CPU is disclosed. The segmentation circuit of the apparatus transfers the address and size for the start of the DMA by the byte unit. When a predetermined information is provided, and a DMA read is requested, the data is transferred through the bus of the word unit such as the PCI interface, and then necessary bytes are obtained for thereby forming a 32 bit word stream, so that the ATM cell of a 32 bit×12 word form and transfers to the lower circuit. Therefore, when the segmentation circuit processes the buffer, all data are computed by the byte unit, and in an application program, the data are not obtained for transmitting the data to the ATM cell, so that it is possible to enhance the processing capability.

Abstract: Methods for switching a mobile between operation in an mobile satellite system mode and a terrestrial wireless mode. When operating in the terrestrial wireless mode, the mobile terminal will initiate an attempt to switch into the MSS mode when it nears the boundary of the coverage area for a terrestrial wireless system to which it is registered. Conversely, a mobile terminal operating in the MSS mode will regularly attempt to switch into the terrestrial wireless mode. For both, a switch between modes is contingent on the mobile terminal identifying a suitable system for registration therewith upon completing the switch between modes. The criteria for identifying a suitable system for selection purposes include the following: (1) the selected system is available, i.e., the mobile terminal is physically located within a coverage area for the selected system; (2) the mobile terminal is compatible with the selected system; and (3) the selected system is willing to accept the mobile terminal.
