    Abstract: A high speed communications system is provided which uses a selectable, desirable portion of the total available bandwidth of a transmission channel. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is an ADSL compatible modem which selects a sub-set of the available downstream DMT sub-channels based on an evaluation of such sub-channels by appropriate signal processing circuitry. An analog front end (AFE) contains sub-band filtering causes an upstream transceiver to use only this selected number of available sub-channels for downstream data transmission. This reduces hardware costs and complexity while still preserving compatibility with applicable ADSL standards and providing a high speed data link. The target data rate of the modem can be further enhanced to the point of achieving full protocol capability by increasing or upgrading the AFEs, and/or the signal processing circuitry in order to increase the number of processable transmitted downstream sub-channels.

    Abstract: An apparatus for spreading the information signals in a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) system supporting various information rates, and more particularly, to an apparatus for selecting a channel-separating and PN (Pseudo-random Noise) spreading method according to the rate of the symbol to spread. One channel-separating and/or PN spreading method is selected from two different spreading methods according to a condition among the symbol rate, the length of the orthogonal code, and the chip rate. One spreading method is to use an orthogonal code and the long PN code with a fixed time offset as the channel-separating and the PN spreading code, respectively. The other is to use the long code with different time offset for each channel as the channel-separating and/or PN spreading code. The spreading method gives lots of flexibility in system design and also reduces the multiple access interference among channels with a certain rate.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus employing voice identification techniques to ensure only authorized users obtain remote access to a data base or computer system. Potential users dial an access number and speak to a security system using a standard telephone. The security system compares the real time voice input to a previously recorded voice print obtained from the authorized user. If the comparison scores high enough to meet a previously established criteria, the user is identified as the authorized user who submitted the previously recorded voice print and the security system then permits the user to access the data base or computer system. The present invention transmits both the users's analog and digital information along a single line to a publicly switched telephone network (PSTN), and therefore is capable of use in currently existing and common telephone lines.
