Abstract: The present invention is directed to a substantially homogeneous miscible liquid adhesive composition comprising a relatively high number average molecular weight (Mn=6,000-10,000 g/mole) multi-arm star polymer having polyisobutylene chains terminated with cyanoacrylate groups (High-Ø(PIB-CA)3); 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (Oct-CA); and a low boiling point biocompatible solvent having a boiling point of not more than 37° C. When this adhesive composition contacted with living tissue and reacted with a nucleophile, such as water or an initiator, the biocompatible solvent will evaporate and the High-Ø(PIB-CA)3 and Oct-CA will co-polymerize in-situ to form a poly(2-octyl cyanoacrylate)-polyisobutylene co-network suitable for any of a number of biomedical applications, from wound closure and healing of skin tissue, to sealant for surgical cuts.

Abstract: This shape data generation method include: setting an input shape that has a simple shape that has a same topology as the target shape for a target shape that is a shape of a transformation target identified from image data; identifying first vertices that satisfy a predetermined condition including a first condition that a normal line of a certain vertex of the plural vertices crosses with the target shape, among plural vertices of the input shape; transforming the input shape so that a first vertex is moved in a direction of a normal line of the first vertex by a first distance that is shorter than a distance up to the target shape; and performing the identifying and the transforming a predetermined number of times while changing the input shape after the transforming as the input shape to be processed.

Abstract: A combination of antioxidants and method of incorporating the antioxidants into an asphalt binder to make a modified asphalt binder are described. The antioxidants comprise a thioester and an aldehyde. The aldehyde and thioester, in a ratio between about 1:100 and about 100:1 parts by weight, are added to an asphalt binder. An acidic catalyst is also added in a concentration between about 0.1 wt % and about 18 wt % of the asphalt binder. The antioxidants, asphalt binder, and catalyst are mixed at a temperature between about 85° C. and about 135° C. for a time between about 30 minutes and about 6 hours. The antioxidants are capable of improving the performance grade of the asphalt binder. The modified asphalt binder possesses superior resistance to oxidative age hardening compared to other modified asphalt binder compositions that incorporate various antioxidants.

Abstract: A D-Q or rotating reference frame control system for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) provides a negativity removal module and a non-linear model module. As such, the control system utilizes control inputs fq and fd, which are converted into the ABC domain as electrical current functions f?ix with negative values. The negativity removal module is configured to share the torque portion of the negative values of the electrical current functions f?ix for each of the three phases of the SRM motor to remove the negative values. The non-linear module corrects the non-linearity of the SRM to smooth the torque that is output. The control system also utilizes a phase advancing module, which outputs fd for achieving a wide range of operating speeds.

Abstract: In one or more embodiments, the present invention provides iodine-functionalized phenylalanine-based poly(ester urea)s (PEUs) (and related methods for their synthesis and use) that are metal free, degradable, radiopaque and suitable for use in surgical implants and other medical devices used within a patient. In one or more embodiment of the present invention 4-Iodo-L-phenylalanine and L-phenylalanine are separately reacted with 1,6-hexanediol to produce two monomers, bis-4-I-L-phenylalanine-1,6-hexanediol-diester (1-IPHE-6 monomer) and bis-L-phenylalanine-1,6-hexanediol-diester (1-PHE-6 monomer). It has been found that by varying the feed ratio of the 1-IPHE-6 and 1-PHE-6 monomers, the copolymer composition may be modulated to predictably create phenylalanine-based PEUs having a wide variation in thermal, mechanical and radiopacity properties.
Abstract: In one embodiment, a system for detecting tremors includes a contactless tremor detector, the detector including an oscillator circuit having a sensing coil, an oscillator configured to generate alternating electromagnetic fields, and a frequency counter configured to sense the resonant frequency of the oscillator circuit as the resonant frequency changes in response to movement of a body part of an individual adjacent to the sensing coil, wherein the system is configured to determine a frequency of movement of the body part from the sensed resonant frequency for the purpose of determining if the individual is experiencing tremors.
