  • Patent number: 9393548
Abstract: Flowing supercritical CO2 is used to activate metal organic framework materials (MOF). MOFs are activated directly from N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) thus avoiding exchange with a volatile solvent. Most MCPs display increased surface areas directly after treatment although those with coordinatively unsaturated metal centers benefit from additional heating.

  • Patent number: 9394254
Abstract: This invention provides a family of compounds that inhibit Class II fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA), which is implicated in the pathogenic activity of a broad range of bacterial and parasitic agents. The compounds were identified by empirical testing, and provide a basis for further derivatization and optimization of 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid and related compounds. Crystal structure shows that the compounds don't bind directly to the catalytic site of the enzyme, and so are not defined simply as substrate analogs. Instead, they create a pocket by induced fit, resulting a powerful and specific inhibitory effect on FBA activity.

  • Publication number: 20160203118
Abstract: A new information in a language and relating to a subject matter domain is parsed into a constituent set of complete grammatical constructs. In a subset of the complete grammatical constructs, a set of linguistic styles of the language is identified according to a subset of a set of word-style associations related to the language and independent of the subject matter domain. A first weight is assigned to a first linguistic style and a second weight to a second linguistic style from the set of linguistic styles. A first intention information is mapped to the first style using a first style-intention rule, and a second intention information to the second style using a second style-intention rule. A complete grammatical construct in the subset is tagged with the first intention information responsive to a weight associated with the first intention information exceeding an intention selection threshold.

  • Publication number: 20160202180
Abstract: A THz quantum cascade laser is used to investigate a target by directing a first beam of laser radiation from the laser at the target to thereby produce a second beam of laser radiation by interaction of the first beam with the target. Self-mixing of the first and second beams occurs within the laser and causes variations in a signal such as the operating voltage of the laser. An operating parameter of the laser that affects the interaction of the first beam with, the target is varied. The operating voltage is monitored and processed to determine phase and amplitude changes associated with material properties of the target. Consequently in one embodiment the invention provides for processing the variations in the signal to produce various images of the target.

  • Patent number: 9390496
Abstract: Methods and systems for diagnosing a bone disease or other condition related to collagen in a subject are provided. These include providing a bone sample from the subject and determining a quantitative collagen morphology value of the bone sample. A reference value is provided from a non-affected control subject where the reference value is a quantitative collagen morphology value from the same type of bone sample obtained from a population of non-affected control subjects. The quantitative collagen morphology value of the subject's bone sample is compared to the reference value. If the collagen morphology value is altered versus the reference value, the subject is diagnosed as having a collagen related bone disease. The collagen morphology value can include mean fibril spacings and distributions of the fibril spacings taken from a subject's bone sample.

  • Patent number: 9388498
Abstract: An electrochemical liquid-liquid-solid (LLS) process that produces unlimited amounts of crystalline semiconductor, such as Ge or Si, from aqueous or polar solutions with tunable nanostructured shapes without any physical or chemical templating agent is presented. Dissolution into, saturation within, and precipitation of the semiconductor from a liquid electrode (e.g., Hg pool) or near an electrode comprising metallic nanoparticles (e.g., In nanoparticles) yields a polycrystalline semiconductor material, as deposited. Such a process can be conducted at conditions, in a single step, and under electrochemical control, while affording control over formation of a variety of material morphologies. Materials formed by such processes are also provided.

  • Patent number: 9389105
Abstract: The present disclosure provides distributed sensor grid, surface, and skin systems and methods that utilize compressive sampling systems and methods for reading and processing the outputs of sensor arrays (serial and/or parallel) such that increased speed can be achieved. These sensor arrays can be functionalized or sensitized in any desired manner and functions are derived from the outputs, as opposed to individual data points. The sensor arrays can be made in the form of a textile, a fiber optic network, a MEMS network, or a CMOS camera, for example. In general, in accordance with the systems and methods of the present disclosure, a Code is applied to a distributed sensor as part of the compressive sampling technique and derives the functions.
