  • Publication number: 20120217166
Abstract: In the electroplating of zinc diecastings with a copper layer, the electrolyte penetrates into the pores of the zinc diecasting. When the temperature is increased later, this leads to vaporization of the electrolyte liquid in the pores and to blistering or flaking of the copper layer. It is proposed that plating be carried out in two steps. In the first step, only a thin copper layer of less than 1 ?m is applied and the plated parts are then treated at a temperature which leads to vaporization of the electrolyte liquid. The thin copper layer is still sufficiently porous for the vapour to be able to escape. Only the solid constituents of the electrolyte remain. The copper layer is then thickened to a final thickness of from about 20 to 30 ?m. In this plating step, electrolyte liquid no longer penetrates into the pores of the zinc diecasting. The parts which are coated in this way display no blistering or flaking of the copper layer after storage at a temperature of 150° C.

  • Patent number: 8236453
Abstract: The invention provides a new route for the synthesis of carbon-coated powders having the olivine or NASICON structure, which form promising classes of active products for the manufacture of rechargeable lithium batteries. Carbon-coating of the powder particles is necessary to achieve good performances because of the rather poor electronic conductivity of said structures. For the preparation of coated LiFePO4, sources of Li, Fe and phosphate are dissolved in an aqueous solution together with a polycarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol. Upon water evaporation, polyesterification occurs while a mixed precipitate is formed containing Li, Fe and phosphate. The resin-encapsulated mixture is then heat treated at 700° C. in a reducing atmosphere. This results in the production of a fine powder consisting of an olivine LiFePO4, phase, coated with conductive carbon.

  • Patent number: 8230674
Abstract: Modern exhaust-gas purification systems in motor vehicles with a lean-burn engine include a starting catalyst fitted close to the engine and a main catalyst arranged in the underbody region, with both the starting catalyst and the main catalyst being formed by nitrogen oxide storage catalysts. The nitrogen oxide storage catalysts are in each case regenerated by the engine being briefly switched from lean-burn mode to rich-burn mode when the nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust gas downstream of the storage catalysts rises above a predetermined value. The starting catalyst is exposed to particularly high temperatures and is therefore prone to faster ageing of its nitrogen oxide storage capacity than the main catalyst.

  • Patent number: 8226914
Abstract: Soot filters for removing soot from the exhaust gas of lean-burn engines become blocked with progressive operating duration on account of the deposition of soot, and must therefore be regenerated at regular intervals. It has been found that reliable operation of the soot filter is possible only if an active regeneration is carried out from time to time by increasing the exhaust-gas temperature to the soot ignition temperature. For this purpose, an oxidation catalytic converter is usually arranged upstream of the soot filter, and the exhaust-gas temperature is increased by means of the catalytic combustion of additionally injected fuel. Here, the oxidation catalytic converter is subjected to high temperature loading and therefore ages very quickly.

  • Patent number: 8211285
Abstract: Consumer goods and industrial articles are electro-plated with bronze layers for decorative reasons and to protect them against corrosion. The electrolytes used hitherto for producing decorative bronze layers are either cyanide-containing or, as in the case of baths based on organosulphonic acids, highly corrosive or have, as in the case of cyanide-free baths based on diphosphoric acid, unsatisfactory long-term stabilities. Electrolytes which are used for applying solderable bronze layers in the electronics industry usually contain toxic or very toxic thio compounds. The present invention provides a non-toxic electrolyte which displays long-term stability for the electrolytic deposition of decorative bronze layers and a corresponding process for the application of such decorative bronze layers to consumer goods and industrial articles.

  • Patent number: 8211286
Abstract: The production of oxidation-stable and mechanically strong metal layers having a black color presents a particular challenge in the area of electrochemical finishing, especially since there are only a few metals which are suitable for this purpose. A possibility which is not hazardous to health, in contrast to nickel, and is economical compared with rhodium is the electrochemical production of black ruthenium layers. The invention provides an electrolyte and a method using this electrolyte for producing black ruthenium layers on pieces of jewelry, decorative goods, consumer goods and technical articles. The electrolyte is distinguished in that one or more phosphonic acid derivatives are used as a blackening additive. These maintain brightness. The degree of blackness of the resulting black ruthenium layer can be adjusted by the choice of the type and amount of the phosphonic acid derivatives used, while maintaining the desired brightness.

  • Patent number: 8136349
Abstract: The present invention describes an exhaust-gas purification system for an internal combustion engine made of an oxidation catalyst arranged close to the engine, a subsequent hydrocarbon adsorber and a particulate filter arranged downstream thereof and provided with another oxidation catalyst. The oxidation catalyst ensures that emission limits with respect to carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons are satisfied in normal driving mode. During operating states with exhaust-gas temperatures below about 200° C., the oxidation catalyst can no longer oxidize carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Instead, the hydrocarbons are adsorbed by the hydrocarbon adsorber during these operating phases. In order to initiate the periodical regeneration of the particulate filter, the exhaustgas temperature of the internal combustion engine is raised by engine modifications.
