Abstract: Microencapsulated probiotic bacteria protected from degradation by acidic aqueous solutions, high bile salt concentrations, elevated temperatures, and prolonged storage and having an increased anti-bacterial activity as compared to their non-microencapsulated counterparts. The microencapsulated probiotic bacteria comprise probiotic bacteria encapsulated in microcapsules. The probiotic bacteria comprise live Lactobacillus plantarum cells. Each of the microcapsules comprises a matrix of a gelled alginate. The matrix wholly envelops the probiotic bacteria within the matrix. An outer surface of the matrix has a coating consisting essentially of one vegetable oil selected from the group consisting of olive oil and canola oil, or an outer surface of the matrix is treated with sodium chloride. The microencapsulated probiotic bacteria have an average particle size of less than 1000 microns (?m) in diameter.

Abstract: The invention relates to a system and micro monitor apparatus, a space-, time-, and cost-efficient device to concentrate, identify, and quantify organic compounds in gas environments. The invention further relates to a method centered on gas chromatography for identifying and quantifying organic compounds in gas environments, using air as the carrier gas, without the need for a compressed pre-bottled purified carrier gas.
Abstract: An apical cuff axial compression assembly including a ring member for coupling an apical cuff of a Ventricular Assist Device pump, to left ventricular apical tissue. Tissue anchors are employed to engage with the ring member and the apical cuff to exert direct or axial compression of the ring member to the apical cuff and to the left ventricular apical tissue. A first variant includes an axial compression ring and a plurality of openings to accommodate the tissue anchors. A second variant includes a segmented axial compression ring composed of a plurality of arcuate members, which may be contiguous or joined to each other or not. Each of the plurality of arcuate members has at least one tissue anchor opening passing therethrough.
Abstract: A defrost or thaw measuring device has a dumbbell or hourglass-shaped rotatable compartment with a cavity, the cavity being partly filled with at least two phase change materials having different melting points. The measuring device may determine the time period of thawing at two or more temperature intervals in the refrigeration space.
Abstract: A magnetically driven hopping soft robot based on magnetically programmed temperature-sensitive hydrogels includes first moving bodies and a second moving body. Several first moving bodies are distributed evenly on a bottom portion of the second moving body. The first moving bodies are made of a temperature-responsive hydrogel containing magnetic particles. An alternating magnetic field is applied to the first moving bodies to cause the first moving bodies to deform due to magnetocaloric effect. The first moving bodies have a two-layered structure. A first layer is made of a double-network cross-linked hydrogel and a second layer is made of a magnetic temperature-responsive hydrogel with added magnetic nanoparticles. An alternating magnetic field is applied to the first moving bodies in a manner that an amount of deformation of the second layer is greater than that of the first layer. The second layer is made of a temperature-responsive hydrogel with added magnetic nanoparticles.
