Abstract: The present invention discloses a high intensity ultrasonic treatment method and apparatus that is used in conjunction with an existing commercial dough or batter mixer to enhance the rheological, aeration and textural properties of the dough or batter. This change in properties is a result of the phenomenon of acoustic cavitation induced in the dough or batter by treatment with high intensity ultrasonic waves. The present invention discloses a mixing bowl (20) of an existing mixer system that is preloaded with dough or batter, the bowl (20) is located at the center of an ultrasonic bath tank (101) filled with a working fluid. The effect of ultra-sonic waves with power levels above 1 kW can be observed over the entire or partial mixing period of the dough or batter. The ultra-sonic waves of the present invention are generated by a plurality of ultrasonic wave generators (104A, 104B) and piezoelectric transducers (1) mounted on a stainless steel tank (101).

Abstract: Copper(II) acetate, zinc(II) acetate, and tin(IV) acetate are weighed so that the total amount of metal ions is 2.0×10?4 mol and the molar ratio of ions is Cu:Zn:Sn=2:1:1, and 2.0 cm3 of oleylamine is added to prepare a mixed solution. Apart from this, 1.0 cm3 of oleylamine is added to 2.0×10?4 mol of sulfur powder to prepare a mixed solution. These mixed solutions are separately heated at 60° C. and mixed at room temperature. The pressure in a test tube is reduced, followed by nitrogen filling. The test tube is heated at 240° C. for 30 minutes and then allowed to stand until room temperature. The resultant product is separated into a supernatant and precipitates by centrifugal separation. The separated supernatant is filtered, methanol is added to produce precipitates. The precipitates are dissolved by adding chloroform to prepare a semiconductor nanoparticle solution.

Abstract: This disclosure provides a method of making polylactic acid using carbon dioxide adducts of carbenes, wherein the adducts of carbenes have a structure represented by formula (I) as follows:
Abstract: 2-aryl-4-quinolones are converted into phosphates by reacting with tetrabenzyl pyrophosphate to form dibenzyl phosphates thereof, which are then subject to hydrogenation to replace dibenzyl groups with H, followed by reacting with Amberlite IR-120(Na+ form) to form disodium salts. The results of preliminary screening revealed that these phosphates showed significant anti-cancer activity. A novel intermediate, 2-selenophene 4-quinolone and N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl derivatives of 2-phenyl-4-quinolones are also synthesized. These novel intermediates exhibited significant anticancer activities.
Abstract: Coordinating additives are included in porphyrinoid-based materials to promote intermolecular organization and improve one or more photoelectric characteristics of the materials. The coordinating additives are selected from fullerene compounds and organic compounds having free electron pairs. Combinations of different coordinating additives can be used to tailor the characteristic properties of such porphyrinoid-based materials, including porphyrin oligomers. Bidentate ligands are one type of coordinating additive that can form coordination bonds with a central metal ion of two different porphyrinoid compounds to promote porphyrinoid alignment and/or pi-stacking. The coordinating additives can shift the absorption spectrum of a photoactive material toward higher wavelengths, increase the external quantum efficiency of the material, or both.

Abstract: Rice plants are disclosed with multiple sources of resistance to herbicides that normally inhibit a plant's acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) enzyme. Besides controlling red rice, many AHAS-inhibiting herbicides also effectively control other weeds that are common in rice fields. Several of these herbicides have residual activity, so that one treatment can control both existing weeds and weeds that sprout later. With effective residual activity against red rice and other weeds, rice producers now have a weed control system superior to those that are currently available commercially.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a compound refractive lens for focusing X-rays in two dimensions. The method includes the following steps: 1) manufacturing a mother lens; 2) manufacturing a daughter lens; and 3) assembling the mother lens and the daughter lens. The assembly of the mother lens and the daughter lens includes: aligning square embedded lens bodies of the daughter lens with square holes of the mother lens, respectively, for allowing the first parabola-shaped holes on the mother lens and the second parabola-shaped holes on the daughter lens to form an orthogonal structure; and inserting and pressing the square embedded lens bodies into the corresponding square holes, respectively. The method of the invention has advantages of high-precision for manufacturing and calibration of optical axis, and meanwhile the compound refractive lens manufactured based the method has high X-rays focusing efficiency.
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for the management of neural activity in an individual. Nerve activity is sensed and correlated with sensations such as pain. In response and without requiring input from the individual, although external input is contemplated, a signal is transmitted to another component for electrical stimulation that alters neural activity. Also, the modulation of the signals between the sensor and stimulator may be modified by a third component independently, independent of, or including user inputs.

Abstract: Alterations of certain metabolite concentrations and fluxes that occur in response to viral infection are described. Host cell enzymes in the involved metabolic pathways are selected as targets for intervention; i.e., to restore metabolic flux to disadvantage viral replication, or to further derange metabolic flux resulting in “suicide” of viral-infected cells (but not uninfected cells) to limit viral propagation. While any of the enzymes in the relevant metabolic pathway can be selected, pivotal enzymes at key control points in these metabolic pathways are preferred as candidate antiviral drug targets. Inhibitors of these enzymes are used to reverse, or redirect, the effects of the viral infection. Drug candidates are tested for antiviral activity using screening assays in vitro and host cells, and in animal models. Animal models are then used to test efficacy of candidate compounds in preventing and treating viral infections. Antiviral activity of enzyme inhibitors is demonstrated.

Abstract: An MR imaging system independently manipulates a fat and a water component of MR signals used for generating image data. An RF signal generator and a magnetic field gradient generator provide an RF pulse and magnetic field gradient sequence for acquisition of an MR signal discriminating between anatomical objects based on longitudinal relaxation time (T1). The sequence comprises, a first pulse sequence for selectively inverting a water component of the MR signal substantially exclusively of fat, a first time delay adjustable to discriminate between different anatomical elements, a second pulse sequence having a resonant frequency selected to invert a fat component of the MR signal substantially exclusively of water and a data acquisition magnetic field gradient for acquisition of the MR signal. An image shows enhanced visualization of discriminated anatomical elements.
