Abstract: Direct growth of black Ge on low-temperature substrates, including plastics and rubber is reported. The material is based on highly dense, crystalline/amorphous core/shell Ge nanoneedle arrays with ultrasharp tips (˜4 nm) enabled by the Ni catalyzed vapor-solid-solid growth process. Ge nanoneedle arrays exhibit remarkable optical properties. Specifically, minimal optical reflectance (<1%) is observed, even for high angles of incidence (˜75°) and for relatively short nanoneedle lengths (˜1 ?m). Furthermore, the material exhibits high optical absorption efficiency with an effective band gap of ˜1 eV. The reported black Ge can have important practical implications for efficient photovoltaic and photodetector applications on nonconventional substrates.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the recycling of plastics materials, in particular waste plastics materials, into chemical feed stocks and hydrocarbon fractions. The present invention also relates to novel zeolite based catalysts used in such methods. The present invention also relates to methods of manufacturing such zeolite based catalysts. Plastics waste is traditionally disposed of by land-fill, incineration or recycling by re-processing the waste into raw material for reuse. Each of these disposal methods has its disadvantages. The drawbacks of land-fill are self apparent. Although incineration may include energy recovery, there still remains the obvious problem of CO2 emission and the emission of other toxic pollutants. Additionally, recycling the plastics requires sorting of the plastics waste because certain types of plastics materials are not recyclable, and mixtures of plastics can be problematic.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for the separation of materials from heterogeneous fluids and provides a means of effecting stimulant-sensitive flocculation and consolidation of solid suspensions within a liquid medium. Specifically, the present invention provides a method of controlling the state of a suspension of solid particles in a liquid, including applying to the suspension a stimulus adapted to control inter-particle forces between the solid particles. The stimulus is reversibly operable to control attraction and/or repulsion. Means of consolidating a sediment bed and of separating the resultant liquids-rich and solids-rich phases are also within the ambit of the invention.

Abstract: The method for lung cancer detection by optical analysis of body fluids relates to analyzing samples of blood, urine and sputum by fluorescence spectroscopy in order to detect the presence of naturally occurring molecules in the fluids that serve as biomarkers indicative of cancer in the human body. The analysis can be carried out based on fluorescence emission spectra, fluorescence excitation spectra and synchronous (emission and excitation) spectra of bio-samples. The early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer may be made by comparison of ratios of fluorescence emissions and/or excitation intensities of tryptophan, tyrosine, elastin, collagen, bile pigments, NADPH, flavins and various species of porphyrins.
