Abstract: Circuitry for providing a method (semi-analog) for normalization procedure of the Head Driver ASIC is disclosed. The circuitry utilizes current DAC's (Digital-to-Analog Converts) to adjust the amplitudes of the voltages across piezoelectric elements, based on predetermined normalization (calibration) data which are stored in separate latches (a different normalization data for each individual transducer). The transducers all receive their respective calibrated voltage values all at the same time by varying the current slope delivered to each. This method provides more simplicity and more accuracy for normalization procedure and results in better performance then using digital circuitry and digital counters.
Abstract: A Unistrokes symbollogy in which strokes of like profile (i.e., strokes that are distinguished from each other by their rotational orientation) are rotationally offset from each other by at least 90° is provided. This provides a sufficient tolerance for disambiguating these strokes when they are written into hand-held pen computers and the like by users having widely divergent hand writing styles.

Abstract: An actuator has a first yoke plate, a second yoke plate, magnets, coils, a haptic feel providing member, and a coil fixing member. The first yoke plate and the second yoke plate each assume a plate-like shape having a generally square outline, and are provided approximately parallel with each other. The magnets are fixed to that surface of the first yoke plate which is opposed to the second yoke plate. The coils are provided movably between the magnets and the second yoke and are fixed to the coil fixing member so as to form a unitary body together. Electromagnetic forces that are generated in magnetic fields of the magnets act on the coils, whereby the haptic feel providing member that is supported by the coil fixing member is moved.
Abstract: A registration system for image data in a binary image path includes a registration parameter source, such as a preprogrammed memory or a dynamic device, which provides registration parameters to correct for registration errors from a predetermined reference likely or predicted to occur during image output. A warping processor is in data communication with the registration parameter source which applies a selected registration parameter to an element of the image data resulting in a warped data element, minimizing the effects of the registration error. The system optionally includes an image reducing device which receives groups of high addressable binary image data and converts them to a single pixel. The pixel is then provided to the warping processor. The warping processor applies the selected registration parameter, either static or dynamically selected, from the registration parameter source to the averaged single pixel producing a warped data element.

Abstract: Small, high-quality soundfiles are algorithmically recombined and their behavior altered to create rich, non-looping sound environments. These environments consist of sound effects as well as musical tones; for example, the sound of a single water drop or a single ocean wave can be replicated and regenerated according to algorithmic rules to create a long-running non-looping sound effect. Sonic parameters such as pitch, start time, intensity, and apparent spatial location are given initial values which are then changed in realtime via genetic algorithms to generate new values. When applied in Web-based 3D environments (e.g., VRML, Java3D, etc.), the present invention dramatically reduces the necessity for downloading large soundfiles. The present invention may also be used in real-world systems to produce long-running, interactive, non-looping sound environments.
Abstract: A light-emitting device includes 16 vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diodes (VCSELs) disposed like a 4×4 grid, for example, in a sufficiently narrower range than the end surface of an optical fiber. The 16 VCSELs disposed in the light-emitting device emit optical signals in the same direction. Since the VCSELs are disposed with a concentration in the sufficiently narrower range than the end surface of the optical fiber as described above, if the optical signals emitted from the VCSELs are spread, almost all optical signals generated by the light-emitting device are incident on the end surface of the optical fiber and are transmitted through the optical fiber.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for dispersal of aggregates of red and white blood cells and platelets. The present invention employs a sonic or ultrasonic device to efficiently breakup aggregates of red and white blood cells and platelets by driving the ultrasonic signal over a small range of frequencies around the acoustic slow wave frequency of the agglomerate. At this frequency, the fluid vibrates out of phase with the solid and is forced out through the pore structure in the agglomerate.

Abstract: A novel method is presented for implementing a filter for processing a discrete signal having the steps of first obtaining a plurality of sample values from the discrete signal; then using each sample value to retrieve a bit vector from a plurality of tables. Afterwhich, a logical AND step is performed on the set of retrieved bit vectors; and a determination is made as to whether the resultant bit vector is comprised of all zeros or not. If so, then a predetermined default action is performed, otherwise the position of a non-zero bit in the bit vector is determined and the non-zero bit position is then used to generate a value of the filter.
Abstract: A finite state data structure includes paths that represent pairs of strings, with a first string that is a string of tag combinations and a second string that is a string of tags for tokens in a language. The second strings of a set of paths with the same first string include only highly probable strings of tags for the first string. The data structure can be an FST or a bimachine, and can be used for mapping strings of tag combinations to strings of tags. The tags can, for example, indicate parts of speech of words, and the tag combinations can be ambiguity classes or, in a bimachine, reduced ambiguity classes. An FST can be obtained by approximating a Hidden Markov Model. A bimachine can include left-to-right and right-to-left sequential FSTs obtained based on frequencies of tokens in a training corpus.

Abstract: A method for measuring substrate bending stiffness and thereby basis weight on a real time basis. Provided is a corrugator having a plurality of parallel ribs, with one or more sheets of the substrate provided below the corrugator wherein a predetermined gap exists between a topmost sheet of the sheets and the corrugator. A vacuum is applied between the corrugator and the topmost sheet, wherein the vacuum is sufficiently large to raise the topmost sheet, thereby deflecting and bending it into a profile corresponding to the arrangement and size of the corrugator ribs and bending stiffness of the substrate. One or more sensors are provided for measuring the deflection of the topmost sheet. The vacuum, an air knife output and/or a fluffer output are then adjusted according to predetermined rules and the measured deflection.
