Abstract: A solid ink feed system for a printer includes a longitudinal feed channel having a feed direction, and an insertion key plate having a key plate opening through it to provide access in an insertion direction into the feed channel. The insertion direction is different from the feed direction. The key plate opening has an insertion opening perimeter that includes two lateral opening perimeter segments and a transverse opening perimeter segment. The transverse opening perimeter segment intersects at least one of the lateral opening perimeter segments at an angle other than 180°. The insertion opening perimeter includes a first nonlinear key element on one lateral perimeter segment, a second nonlinear key element on a second lateral perimeter segment, and a third nonlinear key element on the transverse perimeter segment. An ink stick for the solid ink feed system includes an ink stick body having a perimeter shape that substantially matches the insertion opening perimeter.

  • Publication number: 20040200951
Abstract: A light detection device which can be stably surface-mounted on, for example, a circuit board or the like, and a mounting method thereof are provided. A light-receiving element includes, a transparent conductive electrode (first electrode), a semiconductor layer, and an electrode (first electrode), which are sequentially laminated on a transparent substrate. An insulative substrate includes a terminal electrode (second electrode) which is provided to be exposed at first and second faces of the insulative substrate. The light-receiving element is disposed at the first face of the insulative substrate, and the transparent conductive electrode and the electrode are electrically connected with the terminal electrode exposed at the first face of the insulative substrate. Hence, the light detection device with this structure is surface-mounted on the circuit board such that the terminal electrode exposed at the second face of the insulative substrate connects with an external terminal of the circuit board.

Abstract: In an electronic document filing system, placeholder objects are used to provide an explicit representation of document files which are not yet present but which are explicitly expected by the system. A placeholder object can be a real filing system object, which may be processed by the filing system in the same manner as any other filing system object, and can include filing system data such as file metadata. The metadata may be associated with an expected source for the document file (e.g., for automatic capture of a paper document from a scanner).

  • Publication number: 20040205535
Abstract: A method for the conversion and display of tree-structured information to a “treetable”, a table-like display structure, in which each path from a root to a leaf node is represented by a single column, and cells representing the immediate successors of a node are placed immediately under that node. Variation in the amount of space given to cells within particular columns is used to allow more detail to be given for selected paths and subtrees. Extraction of subparts of a treetable into another such structure is used for deeper exploration of trees. The treatable structure is also suitable for use as a selector and guide to the reading, in auxiliary displays, of the concatenated node content associated with either (a) individual columns (representing full paths), or (b) all successors to a given node.

  • Publication number: 20040205588
Abstract: What is disclosed is a system and method to generate a style sheet comprising the steps of first determining a set of layout constraints such as design criteria to act as ‘soft’ constraints or could additionally include the requirements of a particular output device. Alternatively, the constraints could be explicitly specified or expressed as properties of a good layout design. Next, the present method has the step of representing the style properties of the document as problem variables. These variables could advantageously include font, text line, or color properties in addition to positioning properties including graphical style. Then, solving the constraint problem and outputting the generated style properties in the form of a style sheet wherein the style sheet is a Cascaded Style Sheet (CSS) or an Extensible Style Language (XSL) specification.

  • Publication number: 20040205472
Abstract: What is disclosed is a system and method for specifying a custom document as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) to create the specified document using existing constraint solving algorithms wherein the document, its content components, and its layout requirements as elements of a constraint satisfaction problem which when solved, results in an automated document layout for the set of content components. This enables an easier (i.e., automated) custom document creation process while providing a wider array of output documents.

  • Patent number: 6804401
Abstract: A method for digital image compression of a raster image is disclosed which uses different compression methods for selected parts of the image and which dynamically adjusts compression and segmentation parameters to control tradeoff of image quality and compression. The image is encoded into a single data stream for efficient handling by disk, memory and I/O systems. This system provides a stable feedback loop that manages to a fine granularity (typically 8×8 pixel blocks) the compression of image data so as to be compliant with a plurality of compression constraints; the management of an incremental bias toward more aggressive compression that selectively applies the more aggressive compression methods to blocks that are the most tolerant with respect to visible artifacts; and the adjustable segmentation and compression parameters used to control the image compression.

  • Patent number: 6804485
Abstract: A photoconductive member for use in a single pass multi-color printing machine is disclosed. The photoconductive member is composed of an inter seam zone having a physical seam. The inter seam zone includes one of a plurality of image-on-image registration marks respective to a particular color latent image formed on the photoconductive member in a single pass. A plurality of interdocument zones is also included on the photoconductive member wherein process control marks are formed. While the inter seam zone is used for monitoring color-to-color registration, the process control marks are monitored to adjust the timing of the printing machine so that copy media synchronizes with an asynchronous placement of the images on the photoconductive member. A single pass, multi-color electrophotographic printing machine architecture uses a vertically oriented photoconductive belt. Transfer of the toner powder images occur at the lowermost portion of the photoconductive belt.

  • Patent number: 6802927
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improved cutting of an object is provided. The object can take the form of many different structures including thin formations that require cutting precision, support, and dimensional control. In accordance with one example embodiment of the present invention, the method of cutting a member uses a laser and begins with the step of providing a template removably adhered to the member. The laser then projects through the template, without intersecting with the template, to cut the member and manufacture the desired formation. The laser does not intersect with, and therefore does not cut, the template structure and cause excess laser cutting dust.

  • Patent number: 6803921
Abstract: A method for determining and assigning colorimetry and authorship device information to an image of unknown colorimetry includes iteratively displaying the image on a display device and selecting possible source device profiles for transforming the image. When a possible source device is indicated or selected, the source device is emulated on the display device and the image is displayed through the emulation. A user can then evaluate the indicated source device and if necessary indicate a new possible source device. When the most likely source device is selected, further image processing is enabled. The method can be carried out on a color image processor comprising a source device emulator and display device interface. The display device interface can use a display device profile for profile connection space to display device transformation.

  • Patent number: 6804022
Abstract: In a print control method, a print request is made designating a physical or logical printer which is to perform printing, and when the designated physical or logical printer is printing, the print request is automatically switched to a physical or logical printer other than the designated printer. A system includes a printer, a data processing apparatus, a data transmitting apparatus and a print control apparatus for implementing the print control method, a printing system using these apparatues, and a recording medium which stores a program for causing a computer to execute such print control. For printing, a table showing whether physical or logical printers which can accept a print request are operating or not, is referred to in order to judge operating statuses of the printer, and a print request is made automatically selecting a physical or logical printer which is “unoccupied.

  • Patent number: 6804018
Abstract: On a page by page basis, a printer serves to print out in sequence print data transferred from a host connected thereto by way of a network. Every time receiving print data from the host, a link information creation unit of the printer creates and saves link information indicative of correlations between packets of print data received and pages on the printer side. In case a print error such as paper jam has occurred during the print out, a resend request unit recognizes from the link information the number of a packet to which a print page subjected to the print error corresponds, and issues a request for resend.
