Patent number: 5920746Abstract: An apparatus which transfers a developed image from a photoconductive member to a sheet. A sheet baffle guides an advancing sheet to the photoconductive member at the transfer station. The sheet baffle has an elongated axis extending in a transverse direction to the planer surface of the photoconductive member. A sensing unit, located prior to the transfer station, generates a signal indicative of the sheet basis weight. A regulator, responsive to the signal from the sensing unit, adjusts the position of the sheet baffle to position the elongated axis thereof at a selected angle relative to the planer surface of the photoconductive member. This angle is greater for a lightweight sheet than for a heavyweight sheet.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1998Date of Patent: July 6, 1999Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Dean Thomas, Robert A. Patent number: 5920879Abstract: The present invention relates to a document structure composing apparatus to judge a short part based upon the structure of the whole document, perform processing for complementation and compose document structure according to a desired document class. Complementation specification storage means stores the specification of complementation for document structure. Complementation means applies processing for complementation to pre-complemented document structure. Correlating rule storage means stores a rule for correlating components between different document classes. Document structure converting means converts an original document which meets the structural constraint of a specific document class to structure according to another document class according to the correlating rule. The original document is first converted from structure according to the specific document class to structure nearly according to a desired document class by the document structure converting means.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1997Date of Patent: July 6, 1999Assignee: Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masaki Kyojima, Kazuya Chiba

Patent number: 5918240Abstract: A method of automatically generating document extracts. The method makes use of feature value probabilities generated from a statistical analysis of manually generated summaries to extract the same set of sentences an expert might. The method is based upon an iterative approach. First, the computer system designates a sentence of the document as a selected sentence. Second, the computer system determine values for the selected sentence of each feature of a feature set. Third, the computer system increases a score for the selected sentence based upon the value of the feature for the selected sentence and upon the probability associated with that value. Fourth, after scoring all of the sentences of the document the computer system, the computer system selects a subset of the highest scoring sentences to be extracted.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1995Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Julian M. Patent number: 5917646Abstract: A combination of an optically transmissive dielectric fluid having a first refractive index and an optically anisotropic particle rotatably disposed in the fluid is provided. The particle has at least one optically transmissive region having a second refractive index. The particle provides a first optical modulation characteristic when disposed in the fluid in a first orientation with respect to a flux of optical energy, and further provides a second optical modulation characteristic when disposed in the fluid in a second orientation with respect to a flux of optical energy. The particle has an anisotropy for providing an electrical dipole moment, the electrical dipole moment rendering the particle electrically responsive such that when the particle is rotatably disposed in an electric field while the electrical dipole moment of the particle is provided, the particle tends to rotate to an orientation in which the electrical dipole moment aligns with the field.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1996Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Nicholas K.
