Patent number: 8385271Abstract: Systems and methods are described for allocating bandwidth in a wireless network. Entry of subscriber equipment into a wireless network is detected at a base station which typically provides information used to determine geographic location of the subscriber equipment. Based on the determined location, a level of service is selected from a plurality of service levels available to a subscriber and provided. Location can be determined based on information provided by the subscriber equipment, provided by a global positioning system and/or provided by a user of the subscriber equipment. Location of the subscriber equipment can be identified with an activity of a user of the subscriber equipment, including business and non-commercial activity. Selection of the level of service may be further based upon time of day, day of week or upon a date and time of provision of the level of service.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2007Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Assignee: Telsima CorporationInventor: Nurettin Burcak Beser

Patent number: 8379571Abstract: Method and apparatus for provisioning a wireless multi-modal client device in a telecommunications system includes determining a provisioning environment within and a provisioning condition under which the client device is operating, determining a state of a configuration file of the client device and obtaining an updated configuration file based on the provisioning environment and provisioning conditions. The provisioning environment is determined by detecting one or more wireless networks accessible by the client device such as an IP-based network and a PSTN-based network. Connection to the IP-based network is made via WiFi and to the PSTN-based network via GSM/GPRS. The wireless networks defining the provisioning environment have characteristic timing intervals for configuration file updating.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2009Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: Vonage Network LLCInventors: Daniel T. Patent number: 8374199Abstract: The present invention allows communicating devices to control the amount of compression used in packet sessions for transmitting streaming media to and from each other. When a communicating device detects a decrease in performance or quality of service indicative of a limited bandwidth condition, the amount of compression for the current or subsequent sessions is temporarily increased to allow the currently available bandwidth to support the session or subsequent sessions. After a set period of time, or when the limited bandwidth condition is removed, communications associated with the sessions can revert back to transporting uncompressed data or reducing the amount of compression for the sessions, thus using more of the available bandwidth.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2010Date of Patent: February 12, 2013Assignee: Rockstar Consortium US LPInventors: Bruce Bokish, Donald Spillane, Michael Presnall

Patent number: 8363585Abstract: A system and method for signaling the availability of a Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) user service in multiple variants. Various embodiments involve the usage of the additional capacity introduced by MBMS Over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) in order to carry a higher quality or more robust variant of the service in MBMS. The broadcast multicast service center (BM-SC) provides the same MBMS user service in two variants, one for the regular MBMS and the other for MBSFN. The MBSFN variant of the service may be charged differently and would then need to be protected separately. In various embodiments, the user equipment is informed that the same service is present in different variants and therefore can then select one of the available variants for consumption.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2008Date of Patent: January 29, 2013Inventor: Imed Bouazizi

Patent number: 8351378Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for deactivating ISR and a mobility management unit. Wherein the above method includes: when an ISR deactivation is needed to be performed, the mobility management unit judging whether to perform the following operation by the S-GW according to reasons of the ISR deactivation: the mobility management unit sends a request message of deleting bearer to the S-GW, and carries, in the request message, an identifier which is used to instruct the S-GW to initiate the bearer deletion to the other mobility management unit associated with the ISR function activation; or the mobility management unit notifies the other mobility management unit associated with the ISR function activation to perform the ISR deactivation. The synchronization between the bearer deletion and the network element state in the ISR function deactivation scenarios can be realized by the above technical scheme.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2009Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: ZTE CorporationInventors: Jing Wang, Shuang Liang, Jinguo Zhu, Fei Lu

Patent number: 8351372Abstract: In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, high rate packet data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay. Data transmission on the forward link is time multiplexed and the base station transmits at the highest data rate supported by the forward link at each time slot to one mobile station. The data rate is determined by the largest C/I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the mobile station. Upon determination of a data packet received in error, the mobile station transmits a NACK message back to the base station. The NACK message results in retransmission of the data packet received in error. The data packets can be transmitted out of sequence by the use of sequence number to identify each data unit within the data packets.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2006Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Roberto Padovani, Paul E. Patent number: 8335153Abstract: To provide an orthogonal frequency division multiplex modem circuit which can multiplex signals, whose bit rates and QoS are different from one another, and can transmit the signals via one OFDM line. A serial/parallel converter converts input signals into a complex parallel signal respectively, and a sub carrier and a modulation system are assigned every communication channel. A randomizer changes the alignment sequence of the signal, a discrete inverse Fourier transformer processes the signal, a parallel/serial converter converts the signal into a serial signal, and a transmitter performs the orthogonal modulation of the signal to output the signal from an antenna. A receiver performs orthogonal demodulation of the signal received with an antenna, a serial/parallel converter converts the signal into a parallel signal, and a discrete Fourier transformer processes the parallel signal.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 2010Date of Patent: December 18, 2012Assignee: NEC CorporationInventors: Masaki Ichihara, Yukitsuna Furuya

Patent number: 8335224Abstract: A data-buffering apparatus (100) having two buffers (206,200) and configured to conserve power is disclosed. When a block of data (202) having a short block length (406?) is to be buffered, the block of data (202) is buffered by a small primary buffer (206) and a large secondary buffer (200) is deactivated. When a block of data (202) having a long block length (406?) is to be buffered, the large secondary buffer (200) is activated and the block of data (202) is buffered by both buffers (206,200). As there are typically many more blocks of data (202) having short block lengths (406?) than long block lengths (406?), the secondary buffer (200) is activated only a small fraction of the time.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2002Date of Patent: December 18, 2012Assignee: Raytheon BBN Technologies Corp.Inventor: Walter Clark Milliken
