  • Patent number: 5522761
Abstract: A radial grip remote control for the operation of abrasive blast machines. The handle of the grip is permanently attached to a linear bearing. The bearing utilizes the abrasive blast hose as a journal, and may be rotated manually by adjusting the radial position of the handle. The inside diameter of the bearing is adjustable. The adjustment is intended to allow the bearing to rotate freely about its journal (hose), and to cause seizure of the bearing to this journal when the hose is pressurized. The steel handle acts as a protective housing for a positive shut-off type valve which is internally installed. The remote control is designed to be ergonomically accommodating and to increase the safety of abrasive blasting operations. The base of the handle comprises a female connecting socket for adaptation to automated or remotely operated abrasive blast systems.

  • Patent number: 5520570
Abstract: A radial locator is carried by the bed of a cam lobe grinding machine proximate the workpiece chuck. An initial locating pin is carried by the chuck to sense a rough locating hole in a sprocket carried by a cam shaft to be disposed in the chuck to have its cam lobes ground. A timing tooth is provided on the sprocket in proper proximity to the rough locating hole and for coaction with complimentary locating teeth carried by a rockable locating arm of the radial locator. An actuating arm carries the locating arm for movement between an at rest disposition and a rocked disposition wherein the locator teeth coact with the timing tooth to rotate the sprocket, cam shaft and cam lobes to a final position for proper grinding of the cam lobes. A rotary actuator moves the actuating arm an locating arm between their respective dispositions.

  • Patent number: 5520573
Abstract: A spherical member polishing apparatus has a fixed disk which is disposed in opposition to a rotating disk with a predetermined clearance. The rotating disk is rotated, and spherical members are clamped and pressurized between the rotating disk and the fixed disk for roll-polishing the spherical members. A plurality of grooves are formed along a circumferential direction of the fixed disk, and a plurality of working-fluid supply ports are randomly formed along the circumferential direction between the grooves, between the groove and an outer peripheral portion of the fixed disk, and between the groove and an inner peripheral portion of the fixed disk. The working fluid is supplied through the working-fluid supply ports to the fixed disk. A large number of spherical members are polished at a high precision, while a variation in polishing precision and the like are avoided as much as possible.

  • Patent number: 5520571
Abstract: A method and system for removing a surface layer contaminated with radioactive and/or hazardous material and subsequently treating the waste to remove contaminants and provide an essentially contaminant-free final effluent. The contaminated material is removed by blasting the surface with a pressurized stream of air and sodium bicarbonate abrasive media, and the media is dissolved in water subsequent to the blasing operation. The resulting waste is treated in a sequence of steps including adjustment of pH, aeration and separation into primarily solid and liquid phases by precipitation of solids, which are removed for appropriate disposal. The primarily liquid phase is successively passed through a particle filter, a granulated activated carbon filter and a polishing unit to produce the clean final effluent.

  • Patent number: 5516089
Abstract: A workpiece locating unit is receivable in a T-slot formed in a workpiece supporting table member and provides a pin or other locating device cooperable with a locating feature on a workpiece to aid in accurately positioning the workpiece on the work supporting surface of the table member. The unit has four corners each providing an abutment surface for engagement with one or the other of two vertical slot surfaces. Two diagonally opposite ones of the abutment surfaces are rigid and the other two diagonally opposite ones of the abutment surfaces are resilient. The resilient abutment surfaces resiliently engage the two vertical surfaces of the slot and urge the unit about a vertical axis to hold the rigid abutment surfaces engaged with the vertical slot surfaces eliminating lateral looseness between the unit and the table member and providing accurate positioning of the locating device of the unit as the unit is moved from one position to another along the length of the slot.

  • Patent number: 5516323
Abstract: A method and apparatus for "blending" air bearing rails of a magnetic air bearing slider used to carry a recording mechanism over a magnetic recording medium. In accordance with the present invention, a slider is held at a fixed angle with respect to a at least one essentially flat, abrasive blending surface, preferably configured as an elongated bar having a blending surface. The relative angle of the slider with respect to the plane of the blending surface causes an edge of a slider rail to make contact with the blending surface. A relative motion of the blending surface with respect to the slider in two generally orthogonal directions abrades the edge of the slider rail, generating a contoured edge, or "blend" on the slider rail which allows the slider to fly at approximately the same height over a disk medium over a broad range of skew angles and radial distances.

  • Patent number: 5516325
Abstract: An outer surface of a cam on a camshaft extending along a camshaft axis is honed by continuously rotating the camshaft about its axis, holding a grinding stone adjacent the cam with a surface of the stone directed radially inward at the cam surface, urging the grinding stone radially of the axis against the stone and thereby pressing the cam surface radially inward against the cam surface for contact of the stone surface along a line with the cam surface, and continuously displacing the stone surface in a direction generally tangential of the camshaft axis and thereby continuously moving the contact line between the cam and stone surfaces. Thus the contact line between the stone and the cam will move continuously, so that wear will not be concentrated in one location and the stone will not wear to fit in surface contact on the cam. The cam surface includes a part-cylindrical base region coaxial with the camshaft and a lobe region projecting radially outward from and joined to the base region.
