  • Patent number: 5554065
Abstract: A vertically stacked planarization machine includes two or more vertically stacked individual platens on which wafers are polished. The wafers are held by wafer holders which may rotate the wafers. The individual platens are also orbited in order to polish the wafers. The platens may have a top and bottom polishing pad for polishing multiple wafers. A single wafer holder, using hydraulic or pneumatic means, between two platens will hold and exert pressure on both a downward wafer and an upward wafer. The pressure exerted onto the top and bottom wafers by the dual wafer holder is designed to be equal to prevent any bowing of the platen. The platens are supported by three vertical members positioned at 120 degree intervals around the circumference of the platens to form a platen stack. Transport elevators are used to carry the wafers to and from the wafer holders and the platens.

  • Patent number: 5554094
Abstract: An apparatus for folding products utilizes interchangeable buckle plates and bypass plates as well as a buckle plate and diverting device combination to accomplish various folding formats, i.e. Z-folding, C-folding and half-folding. When the product is a combination of a document with an insert, the document is folded around the insert as initially the diverting device operates to deflect the leading edge of the product into its associated buckle plate to begin the folding process. The folding apparatus is design for use in an electronic publishing system.

  • Patent number: 5551907
Abstract: A method is disclosed for grinding and polishing a substrate (20). An abrasive slurry (26) is applied to the surface (22) of the substrate (20). A lap (28) is moved across, and in engagement with, the surface of the substrate (20) in the medium of the abrasive slurry (26). Ultrasonic energy is mechanically applied to the surface (24) of the substrate such that half wave resonance occurs substantially at the surface (22) of the substrate (20). In this manner, a thickness of material is removed at an enhanced rate from the surface (22) of the substrate (20).

  • Patent number: 5551909
Abstract: A high pressure water cleaning method and apparatus using a nozzle assembly wherein abrasive particles (172) are separated from a transport gas and injected into a high pressure water spray within an impact and mixing chamber (320) at an incidence angle (MA, MA') and velocity sufficient for the separated particles to penetrate into and thereby mix with a high velocity core (360) of the water spray (FS). The spray pattern is preferably fanned shaped instead of cone shaped, and preferably does not touch at least one outlet passage wall downstream of the impact chamber (320) to provide an exit flow path (AG) for the separated transport gas. For this purpose, an axis (CL) of the spray pattern may be offset (OS) from the center (SC) of the outlet passage (302) of the nozzle assembly, which may be either fixed (280, 285) or rotated (650).

  • Patent number: 5549507
Abstract: A combined motor and mechanical drive that is used with an oscillating spindle sander is disclosed. The oscillating spindle sander has a worktable for supporting a workpiece. A spindle extends upwardly through the worktable and has a sanding surface. An electrical motor is supported by the worktable and includes a shaft for imparting rotational motion to the spindle. The mechanical drive is contained within a housing that is supported by the motor and is connected to the motor shaft for imparting reciprocal or axial motion in addition to rotary motion to the spindle. The mechanical drive includes a speed reducer that is coaxial with the motor shaft. The speed reducer drives a cam follower that engages a cam in the housing for imparting reciprocal motion to the spindle at a rate much less than the rotational speed imparted to the motor shaft by the motor. The speed reducer includes a cycloidal gear that engages a complementary ring gear provided in the housing.

  • Patent number: 5545077
Abstract: A band sander has a motor housing (2) and a band running case (17) located below the latter, the abrasive band revolving therein. The abrasive band is driven via a belt (17) and belt wheels (14, 16). Because of manufacturing tolerances, it is necessary to be able to adjust the belt tension in a simple manner after the device has already been assembled. This is effected by an insert plate (19) which is inserted into a slot (18) between the motor housing (2) and band running case (7) so as to be displaceable. The insert plate (19) has steps (31 to 33) of varying height which determine the distance between the motor housing (2) and band running case (7) and accordingly determine the belt tension.
