Abstract: An improved method is provided for copolymerizing vinyl chloride with allyl glycidyl ether and a vinyl ester. The copolymers so formed include 70-99 weight % of vinyl chloride, 0.05-15 weight % of allyl glycidyl ether, and 0.05-15 weight % of a vinyl ester, preferably vinyl acetate. The copolymers of this invention can be compounded to provide films exhibiting improved heat stability, low haze, and good adhesion to solid surfaces such as glass and metal. The compounded resins thus obtained may be especially advantageously used in forming the interlayer of laminated safety glazings, such as vehicle windshields and architectural glazings.

Abstract: A sterically-hindered monomer is used to make a polymer which in turn is useful in coating compositions. The resulting residue of the sterically-hindered monomer is present in the polymer, as well as in a cured coating (preferably an automotive coating) produced using a coating composition having the polymer therein. The presence of the residue of the sterically-hindered monomer imparts in the cured coating a resistance to environmental etching.

Abstract: A polymer having the function of water treatment and labeled with a fluorescent substance having a allyl group is disclosed. A process for producing the polymer for water treatment having the function of water treatment and labeled with a fluorescent substance having allyl group comprises copolymerizing a fluorescent substance having allyl group obtained by introducing allyl group into a fluorescent substance using a Grignard reagent with a monomer having a polymerizable double bond. The polymer having the function of water treatment and labeled with a fluorescent substance having an allyl group can be obtained under atmospheric pressure. Concentration of the polymer for water treatment can be measured conveniently, accurately and quickly. Therefore, concentration of the polymer in water can be easily adjusted to the optimum value. Degradation of the labeled polymer by chlorine can be prevented when an agent for water treatment containing the labeled polymer and a hydantoin compound is used.
