  • Publication number: 20040176950
Abstract: Improved variable dimension vector quantization-related (“VDVQ-related”) processes have been developed that provide quality improvements over known coding processes in codebook optimization and the quantization of harmonic magnitudes that can be applied to a broad range of distortion measures, including those that would involve inverting a singular matrix using known centroid computation techniques. The improved VDVQ-related processes improve the way in which actual codevectors are extracted from the codevectors of the codebook by redefining the index relationship and using interpolation to determine the actual codevector elements when the index relationship produces a non-integer value. Additionally, these processes improve the way in which codebooks are optimized using the principles of gradient-descent. These improved VDVQ-related processes can be implemented in various software and hardware implementations.

  • Patent number: 6766291
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling the transition of a bypass capable codec between operative modes, based on a certain characteristic of the audio data signal processed by the codec. The apparatus relies on a control signal to determine when the codec will switch from one mode to another. This control signal reflects a characteristic of the audio data signal received at the apparatus, such as the type of speech activity or the format of the audio data signal. When in the active (non-bypass) mode, the apparatus relies on an additional control signal to switch to the inactive (bypass) mode. This additional control signal is received from a control unit at a remote codec that indicates that the remote codec is also bypass capable, hence the decoder at the first codec and the encoder at the remote codec can switch to the inactive mode to pass between them the compressed data frames.

  • Publication number: 20040117640
Abstract: A system in which a networked device automatically evaluates hacker attack notification information and, based thereon, selects and executes responses to the attack. The notification may include information such as the address of the infected system, identification of the specific worm, and a list of vulnerable applications and operating systems. The evaluation is based on factors including criticality and vulnerability of applications running on the system and connectivity of the device. A variety of automatic responses can be selected, including notification of network administration, shutdown of the device or services running on the device, updating and activation of anti-virus software, and selective handling of data sent from the address of the suspect network device. The selection of responses can occur automatically based on rules input during setup or by intervention of network administration.

  • Publication number: 20040117175
Abstract: Primary and alternate optimization procedures are used to improve the ITU-T G.723.1 speech coding standard (the “Standard”) by replacing the Hamming window of the Standard with an optimized window, with two windows, or with two windows and an additional performance of an autocorrelation method. When two windows replace the Hamming window, at least one of which is an optimized window, generally the first is used to determine optimized unquantized LP coefficients which are used to define an optimized perceptual weighting filter, and the second is used to determine optimized unquantized LP coefficients which are used to determine optimized synthesis coefficients. Optimized windows created using the primary and alternate optimization procedures and used in the Standard yield improvements in the objective and subjective quality of synthesized speech produced by the Standard. The improved Standard, methods, and widows can all be implemented as computer readable software code.

  • Publication number: 20040093514
Abstract: In a method for automatically isolating worm software and hacker attacks in a network, a computer system detects, as an attack, a probe by a worm software or a hacker from a compromised computer system in the network. The computer system then isolates the compromised computer system from the remainder of the network. Thus, the probing of the computer system itself is considered an attack. In response to an attack, the compromised computer system is isolated from the remainder of the network. In addition, no dedicated hardware or special hardware is required to implement the method. In this manner, damage to the network by worm software or compromised by a hacker is slowed or prevented by automatically isolating the compromised computer system from the network.

  • Publication number: 20040083096
Abstract: The shape of windows used during linear predictive analysis can be optimized through the use of gradient-descent based window optimization procedures. Window optimization may be achieved fairly precisely through the use of a primary optimization procedure, or less precisely through the use of an alternate optimization procedure. Both optimization procedures use the principle of gradient-descent to find a window sequence that will either minimize the prediction error energy or maximize the segmental prediction gain. However, the primary optimization procedure uses a Levinson-Durbin based algorithm to determine the gradient while the alternate optimization procedure uses an estimate of the gradient based on the basic definition of a derivative. These optimization procedures can be implemented as computer readable software code. Additionally, the optimization procedures may be implemented in a window optimization device which generally includes a window optimization unit and may also include an interface unit.

  • Patent number: 6721707
Abstract: A signal processor for effecting the conversion of an audio data signal from one format to another. The signal processor has a signal converter that can selectively acquire two operative modes, namely a first operative mode and a second operative mode. In the first operative mode, the signal converter transforms the audio data signal from one format to another and releases the converted audio data signal from the output of the signal processor. In the second operative mode, the signal converter is disabled and permits passage of the audio data signal to the output without conversion. The signal processor has a control unit for controlling the transition of the signal converter between operative modes. The control unit enables the signal converter to pass from the first operative mode to the second operative mode when at least one operating condition has been satisfied.
