  • Patent number: 5945592
Abstract: The system and method are set forth for photoacoustical analysis of isotope and other compounds having telltale absorption wavelenghths between 1700-2500 nm. The system and method includes a Co:Mg F.sub.2, optical parametric oscillator (OPO) or diode laser tunable between 1700-2500 nm which is directed into a sample at energies sufficient to generate detectable acoustical emissions. A microphone detects the emissions for processing and analysis. The system and method is adapted to detect stable isotope compounds such as .sup.13 CO.sub.2 as well as other chemical compounds. For non-gaseous compounds, a CO.sub.2 or diode laser is used to photoablate the gaseous sample containing the suspected compound.

  • Patent number: 5942373
Abstract: Methods of forming patterns in photo-sensitive resist layers with high aspect ratio features are described. The photosensitive layer is patterned exposed to actinic radiation and thereafter developed. For high aspect ratio patterns, the inventors have often observed a residue of resist material at the bottom of such features, and that this residue interferes with subsequent processing, such as filling the pattern with metal by a plating operation. To remove this residue, the patterned locations of the resist are exposed to a low dose of low-energy electron beam radiation, preferably having energy of less than 6 KeV and dosage of less than 200 .mu.C/cm.sup.2. After the electron beam exposure, the aperture is again exposed to a developer solution, which may be of the same composition as the developer initially used to develop the patterns.

  • Patent number: 5941821
Abstract: A method and apparatus for noninvasively measuring blood glucose levels provides an indirect, reagentless, differential, photoacoustic technique which responds to absorption in a thin surface layer. An excitation source provides electromagnetic energy which is utilized to irradiate the tissue, such as skin. The output of the radiation of the excitation source at the desired wavelength is coupled through a transmission device, such as a fiber optic bundle, which irradiates the electromagnetic energy onto the body surface. Upon irradiation, acoustic energy is generated by the absorption of the electromagnetic energy in a relatively thin layer of the sample to be measured, characterized by a heat-diffusing length. The acoustic energy is detected by the probe which includes a measuring cell, reference cell, window and differential microphone. Absorption of the light beam results in periodic heating of the tissue, at and near the tissue surface.

  • Patent number: 5930890
Abstract: An interconnecting post for mounting a microelectronic device such as an integral circuit chip is fabricated with generally uniform cross-section, by forming a first layer of positive photoresist on a substrate, soft-baking that first layer and exposing it for a short time with a wide-apertured mask or simply a UV blank flood exposure. Without developing the first layer, a second layer of positive resist is then applied over the first layer, soft-baked, and then exposed with a narrow-apertured mask. During the soft-baking of the second layer, some of its activator in the photoresist compound diffuses into the exposed portion of the first layer and modifies its solubility in such a way that, when the layers are subsequently developed, the developer partially undercuts the unexposed portion of the first layer to form in the photoresist an opening of generally uniform cross-section. This opening can then be filled by plating to produce a strong, integral interconnect post.

  • Patent number: 5931289
Abstract: A circuit breaker includes a releasable retaining mechanism for releasably retaining a movable contact arm of the circuit breaker to prevent "sneak" during movement of the contact arm to the closed position, as well as, to prevent "bounce" during movement of the contact arm to the open position. The releasable retaining mechanism preferably includes a hook member rigidly secured to the movable contact arm and a retaining spring secured to the operating mechanism of the circuit breaker. The hook member engages the retaining spring when the movable contact arm is in the open position. The releasable retaining mechanism further includes a release finger extending from the operating mechanism adjacent the retaining spring, the release finger being positioned to contact the retaining spring when an operating handle of the circuit breaker is moved to actuate the operating mechanism in order to place the movable contact arm in a closed position.

  • Patent number: 5933748
Abstract: A shallow trench isolation process provides a high quality oxide on the substrate adjacent the trench and on the upper part of the trench. This process avoids the formation of poor quality oxide on the substrate adjacent the upper edge of the trench that is believed to cause MOS transistors to exhibit the undesirable subthreshold current flow known as the "kink" effect. A pad oxide layer is grown on the surface of a silicon substrate and then a layer of silicon nitride is formed on the surface of the pad oxide. A photoresist mask is formed over the silicon nitride and the silicon nitride and pad oxide are etched, and then the substrate is etched to form a trench. The photoresist mask is removed, a layer of polysilicon is deposited over the silicon nitride layer and within the trench and the polysilicon layer is oxidized. CVD oxide is deposited to overfill the trench and then the excess CVD oxide and polysilicon oxide is removed by CMP, using the silicon nitride layer as an polish stop.

  • Patent number: 5927200
Abstract: A mixing and dispersing apparatus for emulsion ink in a printing press is disclosed. The apparatus includes a vessel having walls defining an upper chamber and a lower chamber. A motor drives a shaft carrying a propeller having pitched blades, disposed in the upper chamber. The shaft also carries a rotor disposed below the propeller. The rotor includes downwardly extending teeth that are disposed adjacent to inner and outer stator walls. The inner and outer stator walls are perforated by slots therein and are fixed with respect to the vessel. The propeller mixes ink and fountain solution and propels the mixture downward toward the rotor, which shears and disperses the ink and fountain solution into the lower chamber, forming a suitably stable emulsion ink. The emulsion ink is then pumped to an ink distribution rail for use of some of the emulsion ink for printing, with the remainder of the emulsion ink being recirculated to the mixing and dispersing apparatus.
