  • Patent number: 5961859
Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring the quality of a laser process such as a welding process comprises monitoring the light emitted from the weld plasma above the surface of the workpiece being irradiated by the laser beam. The size of the plasma is determined from the light emission and compared to a predetermined value of the size as determined under process and workpiece conditions that produce welds of acceptable quality. Variations of the monitored plasma size greater than a preselected value can represent unacceptable welds. Such variations can be caused by changes in the laser beam power, the workpiece speed, laser focusing problems, insufficient shield gas flow, workpiece deformation and weld contamination. The process monitors the light emission from a selected range of wavelengths that correspond to the major emission peaks of the light spectrum. The process enables in-process control.

  • Patent number: 5962900
Abstract: A read-only memory (ROM) device of the type including an array of diode-based memory cells for permanent storage of binary-coded data. The ROM device is partitioned into a memory division and an output division. The memory cells are formed over an insulating layer in the memory division. The insulating layer separates the memory cells from the underlying substrate such that the leakage current that can otherwise occur therebetween can be prevented. Moreover, the coding process is performing by forming contact windows at selected locations rather than by performing ion-implantation as in conventional methods. The fabrication process is thus easy to perform. Since the memory cells are diode-based rather than MOSFET-based, the punch-through effect that usually occurs in MOSFET-based memory cells can be prevented. The diode-based structure also allows the packing density of the memory cells on the ROM device to be dependent on the line width of the polysilicon layers in the ROM device.

  • Patent number: 5956216
Abstract: A magnetic storage includes a non-magnetic substrate. A plurality of discrete single magnetic domain elements formed of a magnetic material separated by nonmagnetic materials are carried on the non-magnetic substrate. Each single magnetic domain element has the same size, shape and has, without an external magnetic field, two quantized magnetization values. The two magnetization values are of substantially equal magnitude but of differing vector directions. The plurality of single domain elements are adapted for magnetic storage of information based upon direction of the magnetization vector. Each single magnetic domain element is used to store a bit of binary information. Writing each bit becomes to flip the quantified magnetic moment directions. Each bit can be tracked individually. The switching field of each bit can be controlled by controlling the size and shape anisotropy of each bit.

  • Patent number: 5956419
Abstract: A method for operating a machine to perform unsupervised training of a set of character templates uses as the source of training samples an image source of character images, called glyphs, that need not be manually or automatically segmented or isolated prior to training. A recognition operation performed on the image source of character images produces a labeled glyph position data structure that includes, for each glyph in the image source, a glyph image position in the image source associating an estimated image location of the glyph in the image source with a character label paired with the glyph image position that indicates the character in the character set being trained. The labeled glyph position data and the image source are then used to determine sample image regions in the image source; each sample image region is large enough to contain at least a single glyph but need not be restricted in size to only contain a single glyph.

  • Patent number: 5956609
Abstract: A method is described for improving the step coverage of tungsten interconnects and plugs when deposited at low temperatures into contact/via openings having high aspect ratios. The depositions are made at pressures between 4.5 and 100 Torr in a CVD tool. The method includes a first nucleation step, and a second step for filling the contact/via openings wherein deposition conditions favor good step coverage. For forming an interconnect and a third deposition step, providing moderate step coverage and low stress, is used to build up the interconnect. The high pressures permit deposition at practical rates at low temperatures. In addition the high pressures also permit application of backside gas pressure to the wafer during deposition, thereby improving the thermal contact between the wafer and the heated substrate holder. This contributes significantly to stress reduction and improved step coverage.

  • Patent number: 5950737
Abstract: A centralizing device is provided for a riser of an offshore well platform having a frame that defines an opening through which the riser passes from the platform to a subsea wellhead. The centralizing device has a centralizing ring with an inner diameter greater than the outer diameter of the riser so that the riser can be passed longitudinally therethrough. The centralizing ring is positioned within the opening of the frame. Adjustable mounting means are used for mounting the centralizing ring to the frame at different positions within the opening. A roller assembly of the centralizing device is carried upon the riser as the riser is lowered through the centralizing ring. The roller assembly is configured to engage the centralizing ring as the riser is lowered through the centralizing ring so that the centralizing ring stops further carriage of the roller assembly by the riser.

  • Patent number: 5952686
Abstract: A salient integration mode active pixel sensor. The active pixel sensor includes an amplify/compare transistor which has a threshold voltage. The amplify/compare transistor couples an input of the amplify/compare transistor to an output of the amplify/compare transistor when the input of the amplify/compare transistor exceeds the threshold voltage. A photo-diode generates a signal voltage which has a voltage level dependent upon the intensity of light received by the photo-diode. The signal voltage is coupled to the input of the amplify/compare transistor. A reset element couples a reset line to the photo-diode and discharges the photo-diode when the reset line is active. A coupling capacitor for couples a select line to the input of the amplify/compare transistor. The select line causes the input to the amplify/compare transistor to exceed the threshold voltage and thereby couple the signal voltage to the output of the amplify/compare transistor.

  • Patent number: 5950090
Abstract: A method for fabricating a MOS transistor device is provided. The method contains sequentially forming an oxide layer, a polysilicon layer, and a cap layer over a semiconductor substrate. Patterning the oxide layer, the polysilicon layer, the cap layer, and the substrate forms a trench opening in the substrate. A shallow trench isolation (STI) structure is formed by filling the opening with insulating material. A first-stage gate structure is formed on the substrate by patterning the oxide layer, the polysilicon layer, and the cap layer. A top portion of the STI structure above the substrate surface is exposed. A light ion implantation is performed to form a lightly doped region. Several spacers are respectively formed on each sidewall of the first-stage gate structure and each exposed sidewall of the STI structure. A heavy ion implantation process is performed to form interchangeable source/drain regions at each side of the first-stage gate structure. The cap layer is removed to leave an opening.

  • Patent number: 5949717
Abstract: A method to erase data from a flash EEPROM cell while electrical charges trapped in the tunnel oxide of a flash EEPROM cell are eliminated to maintain proper separation of the programmed threshold voltage and the erased threshold voltage after extended programming and erasing cycles. The method to erase a flash EEPROM cell begins by first applying a first relatively high positive voltage pulse to the source of the flash EEPROM cell. Simultaneously a ground reference voltage is applied to the control gate and to the semiconductor substrate. At this same time the drain is floating. The flash EEPROM cell is then detrapped by floating the source and drain and applying a second relatively high positive voltage pulse to the semiconductor substrate. At the same time a relatively large negative voltage pulse is applied to the control gate.
