  • Patent number: 7768712
Abstract: The invention relates to a variable focus lens (10), comprising a rigid ring (22), a flexible membrane (20) attached to the front surface of the ring, a rigid transparent front cover (40), attached to the flexible membrane (50), and a rigid rear cover (20) on the rear surface of the ring (22). A cavity (60) is formed between the flexible membrane (50) and the rear cover (20), and the cavity is filled with a liquid. The amount of liquid in the cavity can be varied to vary the curvature of the flexible membrane and so vary the optical characteristics of the lens. The rear cover can be integral with the ring, or formed separately. Further, a second flexible membrane can be positioned between the rear cover and the ring. The various parts of the lens can be held together by adhesive.

  • Publication number: 20100175103
Abstract: A method for throttling inbound email messages in an enterprise email system including a plurality of inbound mail servers and at least one management server is provided. Policies defining message event limits for each unique sender are applied to messaging events from the unique sender at each inbound server. Feedback from each of the inbound mail servers to the management server is provided. When events from a unique sender exceed a threshold, as determined by the management server using the feedback, an alert is generated and a new, more restrictive policy for the unique sender is created. The more restrictive policy is broadcast the more restrictive policy to each of the inbound mail servers.

  • Publication number: 20100125436
Abstract: A benchmark tester retrieves a voltage margin that corresponds to a device that a system includes. The voltage margin indicates an additional amount of voltage to apply to a nominal voltage that, when added, results in the device operating at a power limit while executing a worst-case power workload. Next, the benchmark tester (or thermal power management device) sets an input voltage for the device to a value equal to the sum of the voltage margin and the nominal voltage. The benchmark tester then dynamically benchmark tests the system, which includes adjusting the device's frequency and input voltage while ensuring that the device does not exceed the device's power limit. In turn, the benchmark tester records a guaranteed minimum performance boost for the system based upon a result of the benchmark testing.

  • Publication number: 20100053543
Abstract: The invention provides a variable focus lens, comprising a ring with a front surface and a rear surface. A flexible membrane is held between the front surface of the ring and a generally rigid transparent front cover, and a rear cover is attached to the rear surface of the ring (optionally with a second flexible membrane sandwiched between the rear cover and the ring). A cavity is formed between the flexible membrane and the rear cover (or the second flexible membrane) is filled with a liquid, and the amount of fluid in the cavity can be varied to vary the curvature of the flexible membrane and so vary the optical characteristics of the lens. The ring of the lens may be coloured, and may be transparent, translucent or opaque. Alternatively, a decorative cover may be attached to the front of the ring to give the appearance of a frame. The lenses may be used in variable focus spectacles.

  • Publication number: 20100045930
Abstract: A variable focus lens (10) comprises a ring (20) with a front surface and a rear surface. A flexible membrane (40) is held between the front surface of the ring and a generally rigid transparent front cover (50), and a rear cover (60) is mounted on the rear surface of the ring, such that a cavity formed between the flexible membrane and the rear cover can be filled with a liquid. The amount of fluid in the cavity can be varied to vary the curvature of the flexible membrane and so vary the optical characteristics of the lens. The ring is provided with an integral hollow extension (22), whose hollow interior (24) communicates with the cavity and forms a liquid reservoir for the variable focus lens (10). The invention also extends to spectacles using the lens.

  • Patent number: 7656385
Abstract: Peripheral devices having one or more pedals are provided, wherein the peripheral devices are slip resistant with respect to a surface, such as a floor, upon which the peripheral devices are placed or positioned. A user of such peripheral devices can use a heel against the floor surface through the peripheral device to anchor the peripheral device and can use the heel to correct the position of the peripheral device if it slips by applying a counterforce. The peripheral device(s) include multiple springs per pedal and associated software for accommodating a non-linear force response for a more realistic user experience.

The stator has at least one primary and at least one control winding disposed around the stator. The electric machine comprises a stator extension of a magnetic material. The stator extension is disposed coaxially with the stator and has only the at least one control winding wrapped therearound. The stator extension extends axially adjacent the stator beyond an axial terminus of the rotor and defines a magnetic circuit around the at least one control winding. The stator extension is configured such that in use, the magnetic circuit remains unsaturated thereby increasing inductance of at least one control winding in an electric alternator/motor.
