  • Patent number: 8644178
Abstract: A radio access network (RAN) may limit the number of channel assignment messages that it transmits to a wireless communication device (WCD) when the quality of one or more wireless coverage areas available to the WCD is impaired. For example, if the paging channel utilization of a given wireless coverage area is high, or if the WCD receives a signal strength from the given wireless coverage area that is low, the RAN may refrain from transmitting a channel assignment message via the given wireless coverage area. Similarly, if the aggregate paging channel utilization of a plurality of such wireless coverage areas is high, or if the WCD receives an aggregate signal strength from the one or more wireless coverage areas that is high, the RAN may transmit channel assignment messages via a limited number of wireless coverage areas.

  • Patent number: 8644338
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate unbundling and processing partial packet data units (PDU). PDUs can be transmitted at a communication layer and can include partial PDUs of a disparate communication layer. Complete SDUs can be determined in the partial PDU and provided to an upper communication layer. In addition, however, the partial PDU can comprise a partial SDU. Upon receiving a remaining or additional portion of the partial PDU, a remaining or additional portion of the partial SDU can be combined with the partial SDU to create a complete SDU (or a larger portion thereof). Where a complete SDU is created, it can be provided to an upper communication layer. Alternatively, the partial PDU can be combined with the remaining portion of the partial PDU to generate a complete or larger PDU, from which the previously incomplete SDU can be retrieved and provided to an upper communication layer.

  • Publication number: 20140028095
Abstract: An electronic system and method include a controller to operate in a start-up mode to accelerate driving a load to an operating voltage and then operates in a post-start-up mode. A start-up condition occurs when the controller detects that a load voltage is below a predetermined voltage threshold level. The predetermined voltage threshold level is set so that the controller will boost the voltage to an operating value of a load voltage at a faster rate than during normal, steady-state operation. The controller causes a switching power converter to provide charge to the load at a rate in accordance with a start-up mode until reaching an energy-indicating threshold. When the energy-indicating threshold has been reached, the controller causes the switching power converter to (i) decrease the amount of charge provided to the load relative to the charge provided during the start-up mode and (ii) operate in a distinct post-start-up-mode.

  • Patent number: 8639852
Abstract: Methods and systems provide a burst access protocol that enables efficient transfer of data between a first and a second processor via a data interface whose access set up time could present a communication bottleneck. Data, indices, and/or instructions are transmitted in a static table from the first processor and stored in memory accessible to the second processor. Later, the first processor transmit to the second processor a dynamic table which specifies particular data, indices and/or instructions within the static table that are to be implemented by the second processor. The second processor uses the dynamic table to implement the identified particular subset of data, indices and/or instructions. By transmitting the bulk of data, indices and/or instructions to the second processor in a large static table, the burst access protocol enables efficient use of data interfaces which can transmit large amounts of information, but require relatively long access setup times.

  • Publication number: 20140025666
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention improve the ability of a social networking system to determine which types of data—hereinafter referred to as “fields”—are relevant to which types of user pages. Specifically, a social networking system assigns page types to different user pages, and likewise stores information on different types of fields. By analyzing the relationships of different pages and fields, the social networking system determines which types of fields are particularly well-suited for inclusion on different types of pages. Using the learned information about page types and field types, the social networking system can better aid page administrators in specifying data to add to their pages. For example, the social networking system can recommend to administrators the addition of certain types of fields or automatically add the fields. Further, the social networking system can specialize a search for social networking system data to field types.

  • Publication number: 20140025671
Abstract: Embodiments improve the ability of users of a social networking system to search for information that is likely to be relevant to them by learning and/or applying a search context associated with selector components used to search for objects of the social networking system. The search context is specific to the use of an individual selector and thus need not be as general as the context of an entire page or set of pages in which selectors can be embedded. The social networking system may learn the context of a selector by monitoring user selections from prior search results performed using the selector.

  • Patent number: 8635578
Abstract: A system and method enable strengthening of flip-Flops (FFs) in an integrated circuit (IC) for the purpose of reducing power consumption. This is achieved by using stability condition (STC) and observability don't-care (ODC) techniques. Strengthening enable is defined as ensuring that a FF later in the fan-out is enabled only when a FF earlier in the fan-out is driving a signal to that later FF. In an embodiment the fan-in of a FF is traversed and the STC or ODC is determined for the FF. Dependent on the determination a STC controller or an ODC controller is added to control the FF's enable signal. In an embodiment the power savings is checked and a controller is added only if there is a reduction in overall power consumption resulting from the addition of the controller.

  • Publication number: 20140012883
Abstract: Embodiments described herein are directed to providing enhanced database editing and reporting capabilities. In one scenario, a computer system receives a data item request that identifies which data items are to be reported. The computer system accesses a relational data store to determine which information sets are to be used for reporting the requested data items. Based on the determination, the computer system accesses those information sets that are to be used in the reporting the requested data items. The computer system then determines that metadata has been provided for at least one of the accessed information sets. The metadata includes instructions at least partially indicating how the data items are to be reported. The computer system also reports the data items according to the instructions in the provided metadata, regardless of how the data items are to be reported using the existing information sets.

  • Publication number: 20140009340
Abstract: Processing associated with ranging operations is shifted from a first apparatus to a second apparatus. For example, upon sampling a received ranging signal (e.g., a pulse) from the second apparatus, the first apparatus does not process the ranging signal to identify a relatively precise time of arrival estimate. Instead, the first apparatus sends sample data (e.g., representative of the power and/or magnitude of the received signal) and associated timestamp information to the second apparatus. The second apparatus processes the received sample data and timestamp information to determine the time of arrival estimate on behalf of the first apparatus. The second apparatus then uses this time of arrival estimate to determine the distance between the apparatuses.

  • Patent number: 8620363
Abstract: A base station determines occupancy of a channel used for message communication and transmits channel occupancy data to access terminals operable to transmit messages via the channel. An access terminal receives characters for sending a text message via the channel and determines whether the channel occupancy exceeds an occupancy threshold. If the channel occupancy exceeds the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via multiple messages. Each of those messages including a number of characters that does not exceed a maximum number of characters associated with the threshold. If the channel occupancy does not exceed the threshold, the access terminal transmits characters of the text message to the base station via a single message so long as the number of characters does not exceed a maximum number of characters for sending a complete text message to the base station via a single message.
