  • Publication number: 20180200005
Abstract: A robotic surgical instrument comprising a shaft, an articulated section and a drive mechanism. The articulated section extends from the shaft and terminates at its distal end in a tip. The tip has an attachment for an end effector. The drive mechanism drives the articulated section via flexible driving elements thereby altering the angular orientation of the tip relative to the shaft. The drive mechanism is controlled so as to always fully compress the articulated section along at least one extent by which the articulated section connects the tip and the shaft whilst driving the articulated section from any one configuration to any other configuration. The drive mechanism constrains movement of the articulated section so as to permit the tip to move with two degrees of rotational freedom and no degrees of translational freedom relative to the shaft.

  • Publication number: 20180180448
Abstract: A system determines the transmission strength of the magnetic field signal. The magnetic field signal is transmitted from a first magnetic-sensor device to a second magnetic-sensor device. The system then determines a first projected distance between the first magnetic-sensor device and the second magnetic-sensor device. Based at least in part on the first projected distance, the system calculates an adjusted transmission strength for the magnetic field signal. The system then causes the first magnetic-sensor device to transmit an adjusted magnetic field signal. The adjusted magnetic field signal comprises the adjusted transmission strength. The system receives, from the second magnetic-field device, the adjusted magnetic field signal. Based at least in part upon the received adjusted magnetic field signal, the system, computes a first pose of the first magnetic-sensor device in relation to the second magnetic-sensor device.

  • Publication number: 20180180682
Abstract: A mixed-reality system causes a magnetic transmission device to transmit a magnetic field signal. The mixed-reality system also causes a magnetic-field sensing device to determine a measurement of the magnetic field signal. The mixed-reality system then identifies, using one or more input devices, that a magnetically-interfering object is located within a same environment as both the magnetic transmission device and the magnetic-field sensing device. The mixed-reality system also determines one or more characteristics of magnetic field interference that the magnetically-interfering object is imparting on the magnetic transmission device or the magnetic-field sensing device. The mixed-reality system then computes an adjustment to a pose-estimation model based upon the one or more characteristics of magnetic field interference. The pose-estimation model is used to calculate a pose of at least one of the magnetic transmission device or the magnetic-field sensing device.

  • Patent number: 10007527
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for processing load instructions for parallel threads of a thread group when a sub-set of the parallel threads request the same memory address. The load/store unit determines if the memory addresses for each sub-set of parallel threads match based on one or more uniform patterns. When a match is achieved for at least one of the uniform patterns, the load/store unit transmits a read request to retrieve data for the sub-set of parallel threads. The number of read requests transmitted is reduced compared with performing a separate read request for each thread in the sub-set. A variety of uniform patterns may be defined based on common access patterns present in program instructions. A variety of uniform patterns may also be defined based on interconnect constraints between the load/store unit and the memory when a full crossbar interconnect is not available.

  • Patent number: 10000838
Abstract: Titanium alloys formed into a part or component used in applications where a key design criterion is the energy absorbed during deformation of the part when exposed to impact, explosive blast, and/or other forms of shock loading is described. The titanium alloys generally comprise a titanium base with added amounts of aluminum, an isomorphous beta stabilizing element such as vanadium, a eutectoid beta stabilizing element such as silicon and iron, and incidental impurities. The titanium alloys exhibit up to 70% or more improvement in ductility and up to a 16% improvement in ballistic impact resistance over a Ti-6Al-4V alloy, as well as absorbing up to 50% more energy than the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in Charpy impact tests. A method of forming a part that incorporates the titanium alloys and uses a combination of recycled materials and new materials is also described.

  • Patent number: 9993968
Abstract: Vapors in the fuel tank of a vehicle are collected in a carbon canister. An ejector or aspirator is used to purge the carbon canister in a pressure-charged engine in which a positive pressure exists in the intake. A compact ejector includes a substantially planar flange and a venturi tube coupled to the flange with a central axis of the venturi tube substantially parallel to the flange. By manufacturing the ejector in two pieces, dimensions within the ejector: throat, converging section, and diverging section, is more accurate than prior art manufacturing techniques thereby providing better flow characteristics throughout the boost range.

  • Publication number: 20180146851
Abstract: Method and systems are presented for analysing a wavefront using a spectral wavefront analyser to extract optical phase and spectral information at a two dimensional array of sampling points across the wavefront, wherein the relative phase information between the sampling points is maintained. Methods and systems are also presented for measuring an eye by reflecting a wavefront of an eye and measuring the wavefront at a plurality of angles to provide a map of the off-axis relative wavefront curvature and aberration of the eye. The phase accuracy between wavelengths and sample points over a beam aperture offered by these methods and systems have a number of ocular applications including corneal and anterior eye tomography, high resolution retinal imaging, and wavefront analysis as a function of probe beam incident angle for determining myopia progression and for designing and testing lenses for correcting myopia.
