  • Patent number: 8543524
Abstract: Methods of benchmarking the problem solution space of a trial scenario for a combinatorial solver, as well as the characteristic performance of a combinatorial solver operating upon the trial scenario. Given a set of predetermined trial scenario data, the generalized method includes the steps of: (a) obtaining a random sequence; (b) reordering the predetermined trial scenario data into a randomized input form according to the random sequence; (c) inputting the randomized input form into a combinatorial solver; (d) solving the randomized input form with the combinatorial solver to produce a solution; (e) evaluating the solution to measure the value of a criterion of solution quality; and (f) recording the measured value of the criterion of solution quality in a data storage structure. The steps are repeated for a predetermined number of trials, whereupon the statistical distribution of the measured values is analyzed in order to determine at least one parameter of a statistical distribution function.

  • Patent number: 8535780
Abstract: Coreless tissue rolls can be produced without having to use an adhesive to form a hollow center. Instead, moisture can be used to promote light hydrogen bonding between the layers of the tissue web that line the hollow center. The hydrogen bonding provides sufficient structure to maintain the shape of the hollow center without rendering the tissue web surrounding the passageway unusable. Passageways can also be formed in accordance with the present disclosure that are substantially circular so that the rolls will easily spin on a spindle. In an alternative embodiment, moisture is not used in constructing the wound tissue roll.

  • Patent number: 8530150
Abstract: A method of detecting a risk of a pregnant female mammal developing pre-eclampsia or a complication linked thereto, or of a fetus of the pregnant female mammal developing a fetal or neonatal deficiency linked to maternal pre-eclampsia, comprises detecting the level of a VEGFxxxb in a sample from the pregnant female mammal at less than about 24 weeks of gestation and comparing the detected level with a reference level. A reduced level in the sample from the pregnant female mammal is indicative of a risk of the pregnant female mammal developing pre-eclampsia or a complication linked thereto or of the fetus developing the fetal or neonatal deficiency linked to maternal pre-eclampsia.

  • Publication number: 20130232322
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for processing load instructions for parallel threads of a thread group when a sub-set of the parallel threads request the same memory address. The load/store unit determines if the memory addresses for each sub-set of parallel threads match based on one or more uniform patterns. When a match is achieved for at least one of the uniform patterns, the load/store unit transmits a read request to retrieve data for the sub-set of parallel threads. The number of read requests transmitted is reduced compared with performing a separate read request for each thread in the sub-set. A variety of uniform patterns may be defined based on common access patterns present in program instructions. A variety of uniform patterns may also be defined based on interconnect constraints between the load/store unit and the memory when a full crossbar interconnect is not available.

  • Publication number: 20130212364
Abstract: One embodiment of the present disclosure sets forth an optimized way to execute pre-scheduled replay operations for divergent operations in a parallel processing subsystem. Specifically, a streaming multiprocessor (SM) includes a multi-stage pipeline configured to insert pre-scheduled replay operations into a multi-stage pipeline. A pre-scheduled replay unit detects whether the operation associated with the current instruction is accessing a common resource. If the threads are accessing data which are distributed across multiple cache lines, then the pre-scheduled replay unit inserts pre-scheduled replay operations behind the current instruction. The multi-stage pipeline executes the instruction and the associated pre-scheduled replay operations sequentially. If additional threads remain unserviced after execution of the instruction and the pre-scheduled replay operations, then additional replay operations are inserted via the replay loop, until all threads are serviced.

  • Patent number: 8510763
Abstract: Streaming media is received from a source system. A current overall resource usage of a resource of the device (such as a CPU or memory of the device) is obtained. A check is made as to whether the current overall resource usage exceeds a resource threshold value. If the current overall resource usage exceeds the resource threshold value, then an indication is provided to the source system to reduce a quality level of the streaming media. The streaming media is received from the source system at the reduced quality level until there is sufficient resource capacity at the device to increase the quality level.

  • Publication number: 20130187956
Abstract: In a graphics processing pipeline, a processing unit establishes a bounding box around a polygon in order to identify sample points that are covered by the polygon. For a given sample point included within the bounding box, the processing unit constructs a set of lines that intersect at the sample point, where each line in the set of lines is parallel to at least one side of the polygon. When all vertices of the polygon reside on one side of at least one line in the set of lines, the processing unit may reduce the size of the bounding box to exclude the sample point.

  • Patent number: 8494696
Abstract: A method is provided including determining a first power level required from a diesel powered system. The first power level corresponds to a first proportion of a maximum power. The method also includes determining an emission output for a mission based on the first power level. The method further includes determining a second power level corresponding to a second proportion of the maximum power, wherein alternate use of the second power level and at least one of the first power level or a third power level results in a lower emission output for the mission, with the overall resulting power being proximate the minimum power required. The method also includes automatically controlling operation of the diesel powered system by using the second power level alternately with at least one of the first power level or the third power level.
