Publication number: 20030205942Abstract: A fluid bearing design is provided which according to one aspect includes a shaft defining together with a surrounding sleeve an asymmetric journal bearing, and a thrust bearing at or near an end of the shaft towards which the asymmetric journal bearing is pumping, with that end of the shaft being closed off. The journal bearing asymmetry establishes a hydraulic pressure toward the closed end of the shaft. This pressure provides an axial thrust to set the bearing gap for the conical bearing. The conical bearing itself is a relatively balanced bearing, although it may have a bias pumping toward the shaft and the journal bearing.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 2, 2002Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventors: Jeffry Arnold LeBlanc, Alan Lyndon Grantz, Troy Michael Herndon, Michael David Kennedy, Anthony Joseph Aiello, Robert Alan Notthingham

Publication number: 20030205944Abstract: A bearing for a high-speed and high-momentum rotating flywheel system for satellite or other applications that enables better recovery when unintended physical contact occurs. This better recovery is achieved through increased impact resistance and wear resistance by using a flat annulus connected to the main shaft of the primary bearing and secondary metal bearing and coating both annuli with rhenium or its alloys. Rhenium has a very high melting point but in the annealed condition is ductile so the rhenium coating is hardened to a very high strength and wear resistance but the rhenium beneath is still ductile. This combination of hard and soft material provides good wear resistance and impact resistance for those times when the primary bearing ceases to operate and contact is made with the secondary bearing.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 29, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventors: Robbie Adams, Todd Giles, Sharon Brault

Publication number: 20030205950Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a piezoelectrically actuated relay that switches and latches by means of a liquid metal is disclosed. The relay operates by means of a plurality of shear mode piezoelectric elements used to cause a pressure differential in a pair of fluid chambers. Differential pressure is created in the chambers by contracting and expanding the chambers due to action by the piezoelectric elements. Publication number: 20030205983Abstract: A method for controlling an induction motor using an equivalent circuit model, the equivalent circuit having a real component and an imaginary component, is disclosed. The method instead of measuring a plurality of induction motor parameters, the real and the imaginary component of the induction motor impedance are calculated based on the measured phase currents and voltages. The invention calculates a first control function based on the real component of the induction motor impedance, and a second control function based on the imaginary component of the induction motor impedance, and adjusts the induction motor excitation frequency until the first control function is approximately equal to the second control function. After the excitation frequency is determined, the motor torque is calculated by taking the square of motor voltage in the d-q reference frame.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 2, 2002Publication date: November 6, 2003Applicant: Visteon Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Gurinder Singh Kahlon, Ning Liu, Robert Joseph Mohan, Richard Eric Luken

The apparatus further includes a stator comprising a plurality of slots and full span concentrated windings, with the windings being electrically coupled to the inverter system, and a rotor electromagnetically coupled to a magnetic field generated by the stator. A signal generator generates a drive waveform signal, that has a fundamental frequency, and the drive waveform signal drives the inverter system. The drive waveform signal has a pulsing frequency and is in fixed phase relation to the fundamental frequency. Additionally, the inverter system may be fed by a drive waveform signal that is fed through at least one signal delay device.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 28, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventor: Jonathan Sidney Edelson

Publication number: 20030205987Abstract: A rechargeable battery pack for a surgical powered instrument. The battery pack is an assembly of individual cylindrical battery cells and has its electrical terminals in the form of sockets recessed within the body of the pack in the interstices between the cells. The terminal sockets are adapted to receive elongated plugs and enable the pack to be handled while minimizing the risk of shorting.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 1, 2002Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventors: B. Publication number: 20030205988Abstract: A battery system for a medical device includes a first power supply and a second power supply. The first power supply is capable of being connected to the medical device to supply power to the medical device during a first operating mode of the medical device. The second power supply supplies power to at least one of a portion of the medical device and the battery system during an alternate mode, exclusive of a state the first power supply.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventors: Gintaras A. Publication number: 20030205989Abstract: A wound field synchronous machine control system comprises: an auxiliary winding for obtaining auxiliary AC voltage from the wound field synchronous machine; a phase controlled rectifier for rectifying the auxiliary AC voltage and supplying rectified DC voltage to the wound field synchronous machine; and a controller. The controller is configured for using a voltage signal across the auxiliary winding to obtain volt-second values of the auxiliary winding and using the volt-second values for firing angle control of switches of the phase controlled rectifier. Alternatively or additionally, the controller is configured for obtaining airgap flux values of the wound field synchronous machine and using the airgap flux values for firing angle control of switches of the phase controlled rectifier.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 2, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventors: Neil Richard Garrigan, Henry Todd Young

Publication number: 20030205990Abstract: Several novel zero voltage switching (ZVS) cells and a ZVS dc to dc transformer circuit are revealed. A U core transformer structure for use with the dc to dc transformer circuit is also revealed. An optimal gate drive circuit that achieves optimal switch timing for ZVS switches is revealed. The optimal gate drive circuit achieves optimal timing for the case in which there is sufficient energy available to drive a zero voltage transition and also for the case in which there is insufficient energy to drive a zero voltage transition providing turn on current to the switch at the minimum drain voltage of the switch. A magnetically coupled multi-phase converter cell structure is revealed which achieves reduced switch ripple current and fast transient response for multi-phase systems with three or more cells. A ZVS active reset switch drive scheme is revealed for providing zero voltage switching in bi-directional power flow converters for both directions of power flow using a single active reset circuit.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 1, 2002Publication date: November 6, 2003Inventor: Ernest H. Publication number: 20030205991Abstract: In a DC-DC converter, a technique for sensing current supplied to a load and establishing an output voltage that conforms to a predetermined load line. The current carried by an inductor is sensed and used to control the duty cycle of the voltage applied to the inductor, thereby controlling the output voltage. A current sensing circuit includes a feedback network. A pole attributable to the feedback network cancels a zero attributable to the inductor so that a control voltage is developed that varies substantially linearly with the load current.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2003Publication date: November 6, 2003Applicant: Dell Products L.P.Inventors: Brent A.
