  • Patent number: 6831389
Abstract: A number of embodiments of rotating electrical machines and methods for winding them that provides a high space utilization and very effective winding with less likelihood of damage to the insulation of the wire of the winding during the winding process. The arrangement basically does not require the winding needle to be moved back and forth in the slot between the poles but rather employs insulating inserts that are positioned on the axial faces of the poles outside of the gaps for guiding the wire from one end to the other so as to provide the high space utilization. In one embodiment the insulating insert effectively changes the circumferential length of the coil winding that decreases in an axial direction along their length.

Abstract: An ionizing discharge device operating arrangement wherein initiation of discharges in for example a dielectric barrier discharge device is accomplished by a short circuit shunting of the charged electrodes of the device. A cycle of slow charging of the device inter-electrode capacitance followed by a high-speed electrode-shunting event is used for continuing operation of the device. In this operating cycle energy storage is accomplished by the inter-electrode capacitance of the device without causing ionization by way of a controlled rate of capacitance charging accomplished without assistance of additional storage elements. Desirable fast pulse rise-time energization characteristics are achieved in the dielectric barrier discharge device by way of using a fast, preferably electronic, switch in the shunting operation and maintaining the discharge in a circuit of relatively low inductance and minimal lead lengths.

Abstract: An inverter circuit includes an input section configured to receive voltage from a voltage source and to input the voltage to the circuit. A switching network is connected to receive the input voltage from the input section. A controller controls operation of the switching network and load connections are connected to the resonant switching circuit. A variable capacitance network is series-connected to the load connection to provide a variable capacitance during circuit operation. A method includes passing a supplied voltage to a switching network which is controlled by a controller, and which delivers a lamp voltage to a lamp. A voltage in a capacitor series-connected to the lamp is clamped at predetermined levels, acting to remove a fixed capacitor from the circuit or at least a portion of a cycle of operation of the circuit, wherein an effective variable circuit capacitance is obtained by operation of the clamping action.
