Publication number: 20070145307Abstract: An optical translation technique for moving the interrogation spot at which a triangulation system measures the displacement of a target is disclosed. In normal operation of the laser triangulation sensor, an incident laser beam is projected from a sensor head onto a surface of a web that is facing the sensor head. Radiation is reflected from the surface and detected by the sensor. The distance from the sensor head to the web surface is calculated by triangulation. With optical translation, both the incident ray path and the captured ray path are translated with a plurality of high refractive index geometries such that the nominal functioning of the triangulation sensor remains undisturbed. The optimal position on the sheet wherein the interrogation spot will be located can be ascertained.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2006Publication date: June 28, 2007Inventors: Graham I. Publication number: 20070145309Abstract: The invention provides an optical liquid level sensor used to determine the level of a liquid within a vessel. The sensor includes two adjacent elongated optical elements, such as optical fibers, which connect a first end, or “sensing end”, to a second end, or “non-sensing end”. The sensing end includes an optical lens for sensing the level of a high temperature liquid, while the non-sensing end includes electronic components for processing optical signal data relating to the sensed liquid level. The ends are sufficiently separated by the elongated optical elements, such that high temperatures exerted on the sensing end when it is immersed in high-temperature liquid are not exerted on the non-sensing end. This configuration avoids the temperature degradation of the electronic components, thus extending the lifetime of the sensor.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 15, 2005Publication date: June 28, 2007Inventor: Wenwei Zhang

Publication number: 20070145347Abstract: The present invention relates to a device structure that contains two or more conducting layers, two peripheral insulating layers, one or more intermediate insulating layers, and two or more conductive contacts. The two or more conducting layers are sandwiched between the two peripheral insulating layers, and they are spaced apart by the intermediate insulating layers to form two or more quantum wells. Each of the conductive contacts is directly and selectively connected with one of the conducting layers, so the individual quantum wells can be selectively accessed through the conductive contacts. Such a device structure preferably contains a coupled quantum well devices having two or more quantum wells that can be coupled together by inter-well tunneling effect at degenerate energy levels. More preferably, the device structure contains a memory cell having three quantum wells that can be arranged and constructed to define two different memory states.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2005Publication date: June 28, 2007Applicant: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yasunao Katayama, Dennis Newns, Chang Tsuei

Publication number: 20070145352Abstract: With regard to a solid polymer based fuel cell, an electrolyte membrane for conducting proton between a fuel electrode and an air electrode is conventionally made from a material obtained by chemically modifying a hollow fullerene such as C60 by means of a proton dissociable group. However, this fuel cell poses a following problem: since the proton conductivity of the membrane is so low that the internal resistance of battery is increased, which, when big current is extracted, causes the electromotive force to be reduced. The electrolyte membrane is made of a material obtained by chemically modifying an endohedral fullerene doped with an atom whose electronegativity is equal to or higher than 3, by means of a proton dissociable group, or a material made from an endohedral fullerene doped with an atom whose electronegativity is equal to or lower than 1.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2004Publication date: June 28, 2007Applicant: IDEAL STAR INC.Inventors: Yasuhiko Kasama, Kenji Omote, Noboru Kudo
