Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a shaped product by means of brazing. The method includes the steps of: producing an intermediate object of metal by rolling or extrusion and having at least one flat surface, coating the at least one surface with a brazing composition comprising a resin, a wax, and a flux and/or flux-producing compound, reshaping the intermediate object into a shaped product, and heating the shaped product to a temperature sufficient to provide at least one brazed connection between defined parts of the shaped product. When a brazing composition is used in this method, it is not necessary to use an additional lubricant during deforming.

Abstract: A method for utilizing plastic deformation resulting from grain boundary sliding with or without a novel joint compound that leads to the joining of advanced ceramic materials, intermetallics, and cermets. A joint formed by this approach is as strong as or stronger than the materials joined. The method does not require elaborate surface preparation or application techniques. The method also allows for the formation of transparent joints between two subunits of a construct joined via plastic deformation. The method can be used to tailor residual stresses and maintain native porosity.

Abstract: A friction stir welding apparatus and a method of operating the friction stir welding apparatus are disclosed. The friction stir welding apparatus includes a rotary tool whose extremity constitutes a probe, a retaining arm which supports the rotary tool, and a roller provided at a position of the retaining arm opposite the rotary tool. The method includes adjusting the retaining arm so as to position workpieces between the rotary tool and the roller while adjusting the roller to turn in a direction where a joint line of the workpieces extends, rotating the rotary tool and lowering the probe until the probe presses the workpieces, gradually inserting the probe into the joint line, and moving the probe along the joint line.

Abstract: A low inductance via arrangement for multilayer ceramic (MLC) substrates is provided. With the MLC substrate and via arrangement of the illustrative embodiments, the via-field inductance for a given contact pad array is reduced. This reduction is achieved by the introduction of T-jogs and additional vias. These T-jogs and additional vias form additional current paths that cause additional parallel inductances that reduce the via-field inductance. In one illustrative embodiment, the additional T-jogs and vias are added to a center portion of a contact pad array. The T-jogs are comprised of two jogs in a wiring layer of the MLC, each jog being toward a via associated with an adjacent contact pad in the contact pad array. These additional T-jogs and vias form additional current loops parallel to the existing ones which thus, reduce the total inductance of the via-field.

Abstract: In an assembly of facing metal sheets separated by a polymer layer, welded metallurgical bonds are formed between the metal sheets by use of a friction stir weld tool. A rotating tool penetrates the first sheet, locally displaces the encountered portion of polymer film and penetrates into the second sheet. The affected metal of the two sheets is momentarily plasticized and stirred, and the plasticized metal of the two sheets combines to form a weld between the metal sheets. The interposed polymer film may be intended to serve as an adhesive or a vibration damping medium or the like. The facing metal sheets can be layers of facing laminated metal sheet structures that each comprise two metal sheets bonded by an adhesive interlayer.
