Certain embodiments relate to a hard disk drive that detects the vibration of an enclosure by monitoring, via a driver, a counter electromotive voltage generated in a voice coil motor. If the hard disk drive detects a predetermined level of vibration or higher in the enclosure, it switches the status of a drive signal applied to a spindle motor so as to reduce the current level or smooth the waveform. This ensures reduced vibration of the enclosure.

Abstract: A method of detecting a gap between a head and a recording medium in an information-recording/reproducing apparatus that uses the head to record and reproduce information in and from the recording medium. In the method, the gap between the head and the recording medium is alternately increased and decreased, thereby gradually reducing the gap between the head and the recording medium. A detection signal is detected from which to determine a contact between the head or a slider supporting the head and the recording medium. When it is determined that the head or the slider has contacted the recording medium, the head is stopped and moved away from the recording medium to a prescribed position, and data representing a distance the head has moved to contact the recoding medium is acquired.

Abstract: Embodiments in accordance with the present invention control pitch variations that are not observed in self servo write (SSW). According to one embodiment of the present invention, an outer radius side area of a magnetic disk is erased using an external magnetic field, and an inner radius side area is subjected to self erase using a head. The magnetization state in the base of the inner radius side area is different from that of the outer radius side area before pattern writing. Therefore, in the inner radius side area and the outer radius side area, even if a radial pattern of the same pitch is read, the different APCs are measured. With SSW of this embodiment, a reference APC used in the inner radius side area is different from that used in the outer radius side area. In this manner, the pitch variation is prevented.

Abstract: A magnetic head includes a pair of ferromagnetic electrodes, namely, a first ferromagnetic electrode layer which is in contact with a portion of a first electrode layer with a first insulating barrier layer interposed in between; and a second ferromagnetic electrode layer which is in contact with another portion of the first electrode layer with a second insulating barrier layer interposed in between. The first electrode layer and the first ferromagnetic layer collectively constitute part of a current-supplying circuit. Moreover, the first electrode layer and the second ferromagnetic layer which are in contact with the first electrode layer with the second insulating barrier layer interposed in between in a region where the two layers are not in contact with the first insulating barrier layer, collectively constitute part of a voltage-measurement circuit.

Abstract: Provided is a high-speed, super-low-power-consumption nonvolatile memory with a high thermal stability. A nonvolatile magnetic memory is equipped with high-output tunnel magnetic resistance devices to each of which a free layer with a high thermal stability is applied, while a writing method by spin transfer torque is applied to the memory. The tunnel magnetic resistance device has a free layer including a first ferromagnetic film and the second ferromagnetic film each of which has a body center cubic structure and each of which contains Co, Fe and B. The free layer, additionally, includes a first non-magnetic layer. The tunnel magnetic resistance device has a layered structure formed of the free layer and a pinned layer with a MgO insulating film with a (100) orientation rock-salt structure interposed in between.

Abstract: A current-perpendicular-to-the-plane (CPP) magnetoresistive sensor has an antiparallel free (APF) structure as the free layer and a specific direction for the applied bias or sense current. The (APF) structure has a first free ferromagnetic (FL1), a second free ferromagnetic layer (FL2), and an antiparallel (AP) coupling (APC) layer that couples FL1 and FL2 together antiferromagnetically with the result that FL1 and FL2 have substantially antiparallel magnetization directions and rotate together in the presence of a magnetic field. The thicknesses of FL1 and FL2 are chosen to obtain the desired net free layer magnetic moment/area for the sensor, and the thickness of FL1 is preferably chosen to be greater than the spin-diffusion length of the electrons in the FL1 material to maximize the bulk spin-dependent scattering of electrons and thus maximize the sensor signal.

Abstract: It is possible to provide a magnetoresistive effect element which has thermal stability even if it is made fine and in which the magnetization in the magnetic recording layer can be inverted at a low current density. A magnetoresistive effect element includes: a magnetization pinned layer having a magnetization pinned in a direction; a magnetization free layer of which magnetization direction is changeable by injecting spin-polarized electrons into the magnetization free layer; a tunnel barrier layer provided between the magnetization pinned layer and the magnetization free layer; a first antiferromagnetic layer provided on the opposite side of the magnetization pinned layer from the tunnel barrier layer; and a second antiferromagnetic layer which is provided on the opposite side of the magnetization free layer from the tunnel barrier layer and which is thinner in thickness than the first antiferromagnetic layer.

Abstract: A spin accumulation device with high output, high resolution, and low noise. A spin current confined layer is located between a voltage-detection magnetic conductive material and a nonmagnetic conductive material. A spin current alone flows through the spin current confined layer. Due to the confinement of the spin current, since it is possible to prevent the spin current from flowing through excess portions other than the scatterer that exhibits resistance change, the detection efficiency of the spin accumulation device is dramatically increased.

Abstract: A read sensor of the current-perpendicular-to-the-planes (CPP) type includes a sensor stack structure formed in a central region between first and second shield layers which serve as leads for the read sensor; insulator layers formed in side regions adjacent the central region; seed layer structures formed over the insulator layers in the side regions; and hard bias layers formed over the seed layer structures in the side regions. The hard bias layers are made of a nitrogenated cobalt-based alloy, such as nitrogenated cobalt-platinum (CoPt). Suitable if not exemplary coercivity and squareness properties are exhibited using the nitrogenated cobalt-based alloy. The hard bias layers may be formed by performing an ion beam deposition of cobalt-based materials using a sputtering gas (e.g. xenon) and nitrogen as a reactive gas.
